I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place, but I thought I'd share the recipe I have for crockpot yogurt with other farmgirl sisters.
Here goes:
INGREDIENTS: ˝ gallon whole milk ˝ cup plain yogurt made with the live and active cultures. (I flavor my own yogurt in the bowl. Meaning that I make plain and then once it is in the bowl to eat, I add fruits, sugar, vanilla, etc. Whatever I feel like eating at the moment. Also, I add granola sometimes. Grapenuts cereal is a fantastic additive!) 1-2 Cups of dry milk. This is optional….you may or may not need to add this. I usually do though. It adds to the thickness of the yogurt
Instructions: 1. Pour the entire gallon of milk into your crockpot. 2. Cook on LOW for 2 ˝ hours. It should reach 180*F. (I never check the temp, as my crockpot is pretty accurate. I think I checked it the first 2x, then never again) 3. Turn off your slow cooker and let the milk sit for another 3 hours. Keep the lid on. 4. Take out 2 cups of the milk and mix it with the ˝ cup plain yogurt. Whisk it. 5. If adding the dry milk, now is the time to do it. Whisk it in as well. 6. Combine this mixture in to the milk in the slow cooker and whisk it all together until it is smooth. 7. Turn the light on in your oven. 8. I take a beach towel and wrap the entire crockpot in it. 9. Insert the toweled crockpot into your oven, all while leaving the oven light on. (The oven light provides warmth for your cultures) 10. Leave in the oven for 8-12 hours. 11. Take it out after the above time, and enjoy.
I put it into large mason jars and refrigerate it. I add the sugar, vanilla, fruit, etc once I’m ready to eat it in the bowl. **Before putting it into jars, just remember to save ˝ of it separately to use as your starter for the next batch.
Enjoy! Hope it turns out well for you should you decide to try it!
Hugs, Christine
