As you all know, I am crazy over Apple anything and I found these new apples in the grocery store that I wanted to share. The red one is called "Smitten" and the yellow one is called "Lemonade". Delicious!! The yellow one definitely has a hint of lemon and is sweet and crunchy. The red one is also sweet, crunch and juicy. Both are from New Zealand and happen to be on sale for $1.99/pound which is pretty good these days here in Florida. While I am not crazy about buying apples from half way around the world, the current US cold storage apples are pretty tasteless and some even spoiled on the inside and often mushy. If you come across these Apples from New Zealand , I recommend that you give them a try, especially the Lemonade ones!

See that little basket in the background?? I made it yesterday afternoon. About 30 years ago, I made a few different baskets but then just didn't have the time as the girls grew and life got so busy. Anyway, I recently purchased a few supplies and a pattern to make a simple basket again and tried my luck out yesterday. While it turned out OK, the inside shows where I need to do a few things differently. Anyway, I used the red reeds and plan to turn it into an apple basket of some kind.

Finally, about 10 years ago, I created my own flavored coffee blend called "Warm Apple Pie". It is created from mixing different coffee beans in specific proportions to create what is supposed to taste like biting into a warm apple pie slice. The one main flavored bean that I always used is no longer made so now I have tried to create the same flavor with two other flavored beans. All total there is a mix of 4 different beans in today's mixture: two unflavored and two flavored.

Honestly, I can't remember how the original mix tasted, but I think this one is pretty close.

As a pre-view....Don't forget that September is our annual Apple Festival at MJF with September 24 as our Apple Pie Sunday celebration! While the summer heat rages on, it is a perfect time to dream about what you would like to do this year to celebrate apple season. There are endless pie, cakes, canned applesauce and butter, and quick bread recipes to enjoy! What will be on your list of new things to try?

Winnie,
Sometime you should plan a trip to come see me in October when apples are ripe here! You'd have a ball out in the orchards that my dad planted! That's an "official" invitation!

Winnie.. I am intrigued with your home blend of beans to create a cutom flavor...

I use to make 'apple-pear' sauce.... so easy peasy to make.
But have not done so in over 4 years... maybe while I am back in Spokane next month... I will have the grankiddos help me make some.

Apple-Pear sauce sounds delicious, Grace! There might be some early apples available in the Spokane area when you visit as well. I remember that my Mom used to make delicious apple sauce every Fall when we would bring home a bushel basket full of ripe apples. She never added sugar but instead used a bit of vanilla extract to give the sauce a slightly sweet taste. We loved it!

what a great idea, about the vanilla,,, I only use about 2TBLsp of sugar unless the apples are a bit tart...
When I make the Apple/Pear sauce,,, I add 2TBLsp of sugar and a TBLsp of cinnamon/nutmeg/clove (I have used pre made/mix pumpkin pie spice in a pinch).

It tastes and smells wonderful in the Autumn...
