I was looking through my book from Mary Jane (Milk Cow Kitchen) and I was wondering if someone could direct me to where it lists how to prevent milk cow fever? I read about the calcium pills you can give them as soon as they've had their baby, but I'm thinking there may be something on prevention with diet?

has your cow had milk fever before? We would offer the first milking back to the cow, after the calf had its share. That was said to help prevent it. Some cows would drink it some would not. To help against swelling/edema you can cut back on salt in their diet. I don't know of any other preventive things you can do. I am sure others will have ideas for you. I do watch the cow carefully after calving, and the first signs of lack of interest, droopy cold ears, i call the vet. Best to catch it early.

No, she hasn't. I know it can be a problem with Jersey's, the older they get, so I want to make sure we're prepared and doing everything we can right now. So, you let the calf on her right away, and offer back the colostrum/milk share?
