Has anyone ever lived on a boat?

I have never lived on a boat, but my sister-in-law did for a year while in college in Santa Barbara. I imagine it must be tight living quarters, probably like living in a camper or tiny house (200-400 sq ft). Why are you thinking of living on a boat?

It is a dream of mine, I have been boat shopping but nothing has fell into place yet.
I just thought I would throw the question out to see if any farmgirls had tips and thoughts on what is a must have, or what to steer clear of.
We have property that adjoins DNR property by the lake. The plan is to build a small cabin there.
I would love to live on the boat most of the year and then winter to the cabin.
I think I would like to sell my "in-town" house for a boat.
So far via my research, I think boat life would be quite economical.
Also no property tax, no landscape or yard maintenance/cost
Get tired of the neighborhood, you float away to somewhere new.
Would be ultimate tiny house living which I am cool with, I don't like stuff and could probably live out of a backpack.

Sounds like a dream life, so long as you have gas and an anchor you could move around and explore anywhere the wind or spirit moves you. I say live your dream, just remember there are maintenance and boat licensing fees. I wonder if you can add solar to the boat like you can to RV's and trailers?

That sounds like a wonderful dream! I haven't lived on a boat before and don't think I ever could. I have a massive fear of water. But I hope your dream comes true! Best of luck in your search for a boat!

I had co-worker friend who lived on a boat.. they were docked at the Marina (w/a fee).. but were able to use the bathroom (shower) facility at the Marina club house... so they would not have to deal with their Holding Tank,,, and they used the local laundry-mat...
They also took advantage of the gym/shower facility at the county building (for employees)... The only time it was not so pleasant was during the rainy season and dead of Winter... But they loved being by the Beach.

So far the boat shopping is disappointing. I almost started to settle and go look at a boat the had features on my "don't want" list. But DH is right, I just need to keep faith and the right boat will come along. Until then I can keep adding to the boat fund.

I would also have a marina slip, there are two marinas on the lake. One has better amenities but a 10 minute farther drive.

We lived on a 50' houseboat on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia for a couple of years. The biggest problem we had was water in the winter. They had to cut it off to the dock and we had to pull around to the fueling station every few days to fill the tanks. It had plenty of room for us and the pets. After my daughter was born, we moved to land as I didn't swim and was to frightened to learn. We have many good memories.

Nora,
I am not sure about the Indiana winters on a lake, but I do have a cabin for plan B!
Did you have any issues with excess moisture in the boat?
The Marina here has pump-outs with the slips, and I think we will only need fuel for the generator. which I hope to supplement or replace with solar panels.
I just need to find the right boat in the right price range. I am aggravated with myself as last fall I had found it, but I hesitated too long. I always say if it is meant to be it will all work out, so maybe that boat just wasn't meant to be.

Thanks Nora, I just wondered as I have read some people have condensation issues in their cabins. That would be a pain in the rear.

Yes it would. However, if that becomes a problem, I'm sure weather stripping around doors and windows would take care of it or a dehumidifier.

Hi Bridge! Sounds like an awesome dream!
When I was young my father followed through on a similar dream and bought a large sailboat which was docked in Berkeley, CA, near San Francisco. It was about 3 hours from our inland home, and we spent at least one summer driving over to upgrade it. So I did some mini-living on it, enough to know what marina life is like. In the SF bay the weather is pretty damp most of the year, so I remember mustiness and dampness all the time. Maybe Indiana is drier in the summers? I can still hear the sound of lanyards slapping against masts as the tide rocked the marina boats back and forth. And the seagulls, and even the sound of footsteps up and down the docks. Those are good memories!
We have a recreational lake here where I live and the waiting list for a slip in the marina is years long. Have you looked into availability? You may want to get on a list while you shop, if its a long wait.
Another idea would be to rent a boat at a marina for a week to live on it before you dive in (no pun intended!) The experience may help you discover disadvantages you hadn't imagined, or, conversely, really light a fire under you to double down and find that boat!
Either way, don't wait too long just thinking about it. Before you know it, life is behind you and you find yourself wishing you had just committed.
Good luck chasing your dream!!

Thanks Sara.....Loved to hear your memories.

I have a marina slip on reserve and I am leaving to go inspect "the" boat this Wed. I am hoping this is the one (fingers and toes crossed)

Ohhh, I dream of this. Living aboard is apparently a big thing out here (didn't know it when we moved here) but it makes sense because of the cost of real estate. We live on a peninsula with 250 miles of coast line and countless marinas - what I wouldn't give for a floating "tiny house" where I could escape from it all!

I always thought that would be great. But I grew up in a small town called Florence, Indiana. When I was 10-12yrs old, my dad had an older couple that were friends. They had a barge old and long that boats that were used to ship things up and down Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Any way they built them a house on it. In the winter the would go to New Orleans then they would be back for the summer. They were the sweetest couple. And they had a dog. Don't remember his name. She partly was responsible taught me how to swim. And that went on for a number of years. Then one summer they never came back. I was sad. Dad said they just got to old to do it anymore. I will never forgot them. Loved the dearly.

I got a boat!!! It was not the boat at MO.
But after that boat fail, we decided we wanted a trailer-able boat and we wanted one that fit the dock slip that we preferred (36ft or less).
It must have been meant to be as I found one, and half kidding mentioned it and the next thing I knew I own a BOAT!!!
It arrived in my yard last Tuesday at 2AM.

I have been cleaning and making her mine!
I'll post a picture tomorrow.
