Hi girls!

The other day we were at the market, and the cashier was discussing food traditions with the customer in line in front of us. They were talking about how when they were young, fish on Fridays was a weekly thing, rather than a Lenten tradition. I giggled and said, “Yes! We had fish on Wednesdays, too, remember? But at some point, Wednesdays became ‘Prince Spaghetti Day’ Instead.” They looked at me like I had two heads. My husband chimed in, “We didn’t have that here.” I was dumfounded. I thought “Prince Spaghetti Day” was everywhere! I asked all three of them, “You don’t remember Anna Maria Alberghetti yelling ‘Anthonyyyyyy!’ from her second story window on Prince Spaghetti Day? And little Anthony running through the streets of Boston to get home for spaghetti?” They all just looked at each other like I was nuts. I said, “You know…the commercial?” Nope. Not a one had ever seen it. Apparently, it was only a New England thing…

Did you ever see it? Did your family observe "Prince Spaghetti Day?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlNAYCcxgUw

The really funny thing was, I had it all balled up… When I got home, I searched for the video online. I had Anthony and ’Prince Spaghetti Day’ right, but his mother wasn’t Anna Maria Alberghetti …. Anna Maria Alberghetti had done the Good Seasons commercial when I was a kid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq1iyP6iv4Y

Do any of you remember either of these?

Prince Spaghetti commercial WAS, in fact, Boston-esque. But I always thought it was just because Prince Spaghetti was made in Boston… I had no idea it was a local-only kind of thing!!!

Another one of my favorites, which I know I have shared with you before, was from the New England Brown Egg Council of Augusta, ME. I still sing it every time I go to pick up an egg:

“Brown eggs are local eggs, and local eggs are fresh!”

I tried so hard to find the video for you, because the jingle was just so catchy, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. :(

And do any of you remember the Colgate commercials during the Captain Kangaroo show?

“Colgate Floride MFP, helps to prevent cavities, and it tastes great, naturally!”

(‘Couldn’t find a video for that, either – but there are plenty of Captain Kangaroo shows on You Tube, which I’m sure feature the ad!)

This whole encounter started a huge conversation here at our home with family and friends… Oh the memorable commercials!

Have any of you ever passed a loaf of Wonder Bread without giving the “fresh guy” a little squeeze?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlRbHiWQgH4

Or what about squeezing the Charmin (poor Mr. Whipple)?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L50tuag6iRs

And remember the Dunkin' Donuts guy? “Time to make the donuts…”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=petqFm94osQ

And what about that gruff-voiced “Where’s the beef?” lady???

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug75diEyiA0

And who can forget poor Ralph, who ate the whooooole thing? Thank goodness for Alka Seltzer!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFKifpMtlNs

And remember: "It's not NICE to fool MOTHER NATURE!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijVijP-CDVI

And do any of you still wish you were an Oscar Meyer Weiner?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNddW2xmZp8

And remember their way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0A47NkRI3U

Well, that’s enough from me...

Now it’s YOUR turn, girls!

What commercials stick out in your mind most from days of old???

Thanks for walking down memory lane with me!

Hugs –

Nini

Oh my stars!!!
Iwas such the deprived kid....as we lived in Germany for the most part of my childhood... that being said... I do recall the "Does she, or doesn't she, only her hair dresser knows for sure " commercials for Lady Clairol...
Oh and the Tang powdered OJ drink mix of the late 1960's.

One of my favorites was the Pepsi commercial with the visit to Grandma's house, and she opens to door to surprise a little boy with puppies. They are jumping all over him and his laughter is the sweetest ever. I can hear it plan as day in my head. Karla

Nini, I remember the Prince spaghetti commercial... and I was just singing that Oscar Mayer commercial when I was thinking of how my sweet, departed Mama use to love that little kid singing that. And the Miss Clairol, does she or doesn't she one popped into my head too.
What was that commercial, where the lady was either in a wedding or she was the mom, getting everybody else ready for the wedding, and she finally slumped into a chair at the end of the day and the announcer says, "She couldn't hold up, but her hair did!" Was that a Final Net commercial?... anybody???

LOL! These are just SO great!!!! I'm so glad it's not just me...

Jana - I loved that Dr. Pepper commercial! I never liked Dr. Pepper, though. My poor parents... They spent more money on me begging for a can of Dr. Pepper, only to have me refuse to drink it!!! LOL!!!

And do you remember the controversy about all the skin they showed in that Nair commercial? My grandmother would turn the t.v. right off the minute that came on! LOL!!!

Gracie - that's so funny! I remember that, too!!! (And I DO!!! LOL!!!)

And Karla... This one is just for you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_fjZHcs2bY

Judy - You REMEMBER Prince Spaghetti Day?! That is AWESOME!!! You just made MY day!!!! LOL!! I DO remember that wedding commercial... but I can't for the life of me remember what it was for!!! LOL! My goodness... Final Net... Remember being at the hairdresser and that little face protector thingy they would give us to cover our faces so the hairspray wouldn't ruin our make-up and so that we wouldn't breathe it in?!

(Gracie - AMEN to that! My hosiery always outlasts me... AND my shoes! LOL!)

Remember the "Whistle Pop" jingle - "It's the lollipop with the <whistle> <whistle> on the top..." I couldn't find a video for that one... :(

And how about the Charlie fragrance commercial? "And they call it CHAR-LIE!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Sn8H42FZcI

And who didn't love the Coke commercial... "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in per-fect har-mo-ny... I'd like to buy the world a Coke, and keep it comp-a-ny... It's the RE-AL thing!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib-Qiyklq-Q

Or Heinz's "Anticipa-a-a-tion... It's makin' me wait! It's keepin' me wai-ai-ai-i-tin'..."

And what about Calgon's "Ancient Chinese "secret, huh?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzixL7Ef-bI

And do you all remember the "Don't Litter" ad where Indian/Native American with the tear coming down his cheek as the car drives by and throws trash at his feet?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib-Qiyklq-Q

What about the Frito Bandito? "Ai Ai Ai Ai... I am the Frito Bandito! I like Frito's Corn Chips, I love them I do! I want Fritos Corn chips I will get them from you!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOUilxJWm24

What about the Big Mac commercial: "Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK2qBbDn5W0

Or "Have it YOUR way at Burger King": "Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us, all we ask is that you let us serve it your way!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJXzkUH72cY

LOL! I am sure I'm giving you the wrong impression... I really did go out and play with my friends every day! LOL!!! I was NOT stuck to the boob tube... But these commercials... WOW...

What else do we remember???

Hugs -

Nini

Oh my gosh! I just remembered the old Chuck Wagon commercial! We would always beg our Mom to buy Chuck Wagon for our dog, hoping we would see the chuck wagon roll across the floor! Too funny!

OH Nini, I remember that Chuck Wagon commercial. Such a cute dog.
Didn't they have the BEST & Decent commercials back then? No feminine protection to embarrass us in front of our dates, that's for sure!

That Coke commercial made me believe that we could achieve world peace by sharing a bottle of coke. I still think it is responsible for my soda addiction. And i recently found the old Shasta commercial where they are riding horses...singing, Take your time.....love it.....and of course, Mikey! He likes it! And I have never been able to forget (though I wish I could) that Fig newton commercial where the guy dressed up and sang "The Big Fig Newton". I also love the Levi commercial where they are singing "Levis, haw, haw"....and Slinky. And "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!" I even remember some of the old cigarette commercials (before they were banned) and an anti-smoking commercial featuring "Johnny Smoke". My favorite, when I was young, was "Help! There's a man in my bathtub!".....it's fun to take a bath with Mr. Bubble!

Both my dad and I have the same favorite commercial. It's not super old but we still talk about it to this day. It's about the little girl who leaves Santa cheese instead of cookies! Just they way she says cheese is hilarious!

From when I was small (late 70s/early 80s I think) there was the coke commercial at Christmas "I'd like to teach the world to sing...."

In Canada we also had the polar bear commercials for coke and of course our Tim Horton's tear-jerkers.

I remember the Folgers commercial that played for years at Christmas time. The one where Peter comes home from college and starts a pot of coffee on Christmas morning, waking everyone up with the smell, and the Mom says "Peter" in that breath catching way, as they are all coming down the stairs.

I've had the beginning of this Sears air conditioning commercial stuck in my head for about 20 years. I'm not sure I'd consider it a favorite but my brain sure has latched on to it!
