I've heard comfrey salve is good for scarring and injuries. is it? if so, how is it made? I broke my wrist and will need to sooth it once the pins are removed.

Hi Andrea, I've made comfrey salve when I had a comfrey plant. It's been years since I had comfrey so I don't remember all of the recipe. I know I used beeswax and olive oil. I used it for scapes, cuts, and rough cracked feet.
Do you have a plant or are you buying dried leaves? If you have a plant remember to harvest the leaves in the evening. That's when the oil is at it's highest. It's the only herb I know of you harvest late - most are harvest early in the morning after dew has dried.
I ordered a Russian comfrey plant from Mountain Valley Nursery which will be sent later this month. When I can harvest leaves I will make a batch of salve.

Be careful where you plant those crazy comfrey plants. I started out with a tiny plant back in the early 90's and now it's a patch about 6 feet long. It's like mint, it spreads. I mow it back every so often thru-out the summer to tame the beast. lol A tire is a perfect way to plant it if you don't want gobs. I have never harvested it but the bees and I love the tiny lavender flowers it blesses us with. Anything to help our little pollinators! Boneset is another good herb for healing broken bones. I had one of those but after a couple of years it left us. Didn't like my soil I guess.

If you don't want to make a salve, you can also make a poultice... simply put some comfrey in some cheesecloth, and soak in hot water. Squeeze out the excess and put it on the area, making sure it is not so hot it will burn.
