This Friday there is going to be a "Snow Moon, Lunar Eclipse and Comet" in our night sky to view. The lunar eclipse will need a lot of patience as it slowly happens, about 90 minutes starting at 7:44 p.m. EST. The comet is best viewed with a telescope but you should be able to see it's blue-green glow without one just before sunrise.

Wishing upon a star for clear skies for all!

The Snow Moon is February's Full moon, typically February is the month that America gets the most snow according to the Weather Channel so thus the Snow Moon! Is this correct Dawn?

I love full moons and to have a comet and lunar eclipse all in one night is truly something special.

Enjoy everyone.

A Snow Moon was also called "Hunger Moon" by native Americans. It is a full moon during what is normally a very cold and snowy month, February. Here in the Chicago area we are having our 4th day in a row of 50+ temperatures, so Snow Moon isn't quite the right name anymore for it.

Thanks Dawn and Deb. That's why I've never heard of it here in Texas. Hunger Moon sounds sad - don't you think.

I can't wait! New camera in hand with a great 400 mm lens! Lets pray the skies are clear!!! BTW: did anyone see the moon last night here in the south? Had a huge circle around it! SO beautiful!

Dawn: that is nice information to know! Climate changes in the past hundred plus years tends to change the meaning of things anymore....

Thanks for sharing, Dawn. I would love to see the comet. I will have to check it out right before sunrise when I am up with the baby.

Thanks Dawn for this heads up. We should have clear skies by Friday so maybe I can see something here in Florida. Snow moon for February? LOL!! It was 77 degrees here today with more of the same continuing into next week!

I think this link is very informative about tonight's sky show. Looks like we are in for a cloudy night here, but last night's moon was impressive!

Here is a list of some of the traditional names for the different full moons that the First Nations have used. They vary from group to group, obviously, but these are some of the more common ones.

January -- Wolf Moon or Old Moon
February -- Snow Moon or Hunger Moon
March -- Worm Moon or Sap Moon
April -- Pink Moon, Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, or Fish Moon
May -- Flower Moon, Corn Planting Moon, Milk Moon
June -- Strawberry Moon, Rose Moon, Hot Moon
July -- Buck Moon, Thunder Moon
August -- Sturgeon Moon or Green Corn Moon
September -- Corn Moon or Barley Moon. Sometimes the Harvest Moon -- Harvest Moon is the one closest to the Autumnal Equinox -- sometimes in October
October -- Hunter's Moon, Travel Moon, Dying Moon
November -- Beaver Moon or Frost Moon
December -- Cold Moon or Long Nights Moon

Thanks for the list Marilyn! I love all the different names for the full moons each month.

It is cloudy here and though the moon is bright, it is like seeing it through a sock! Hopefully one of you farmgirls can see it clearly tonight!

Sorry you missed it, but don't worry the sky is always putting on some kind of show for us. I try to keep it posted here when an event is happening. Keep an eye out for one too and post it if you see one!
