That must be so lovely Connie! The daffodil greens are coming up around here. I started a bunch of Cole crops last week. A few inside, some in milk jugs, winter sown method, outside. The inside ones are sprouting. I really want the jugs to work, since I don't have a lot of space inside.

I set up my little indoor greenhouse today and planted some lettuce. I'm going to start tomatoes and peppers tomorrow.

Looking for advice form more seasoned gardeners:
When you have a mild winter and February is looking like April and May temperatures when do you plant.

Here in Kansas City area our Lows are low 50's/ high 40's and our Highs are in the 70's. I have no idea what I'm going to do. I want to just plant in the garden, but I don't have the money nor resources to cover everything if we snap back to Average. I have enough to start everything indoors, but then I'm afraid Summer is going to come early and my cold season stuff won't last long.

Spotted the tops of my garlic through all the mulching I did in the Fall yesterday. Spotted Tulip leaves just poking out of the soil today. I'm not ready for Spring to be here!

Hi Roxanne! Welcome to MJFG! Here in S. Indiana, we are having the same issue. The thing is, the weather is unpredictable, moody, at best. I want to get started badly, but I know there is a chance that it will back fire.

Have you started anything inside? Do you know what Cole crops are? Generally, we are talking kale, cabbage, and other brassicas. I have started most of my brassicas in the past week. I wish I had started them earlier. One thing that I am trying, in addition to my inside starts, is the winter sow method. So I have close to a doz mini milk jug greenhouses outside. It's an experiment. My inside starts have sprouted, those have not.

Anyway, I suggest starting some coles. These are plants that can take more cold than, say tomatoes or peppers. I am going to try direct sowing just a few kale seeds this week. They are leftover from last year and I already started some inside. Another experiment! See, gardening is about trail and error. Just don't put all of your eggs in one basket. ;)

Many Blessings- Alicia #5232 FGOTM May 2016

Lenora, when I started from seed I used the mini greenhouses. Have fun watching your seedlings grow.

Roxanne, our winter has been mild here, but it can turn on a dime, and we could still have ice and snow into March. I only have one herb I am starting from seed outside, but I am waiting until two weeks after the last day of frost to sow it. That's what the package said to do. If you follow the package directions on sowing and last frost date in your area you should be okay. Frost can kill plants as quick as freezing temperatures. Your Extension Agent should be able to help you.

This is the site I go to for last and first frost dates.

Planning on sitting down and putting my garden area on graph paper today with the hopes of figuring out how much I can grow and what else I need to purchase seed wise. I won't be starting my seeds indoors until the end of the month or the beginning of next...

Shannon planning a garden on paper is so much fun but it takes a little work too to figure it all out.

I love the picture of the gals working in the garden!
I been checking out the seed catalogs like garden porn, LOL.

Have you seen the new Zinnia Queen Red Lime, they are beautiful!! Definitely on my list since I love zinnias! I am also going to try to grow some geraniums from seed, has anyone ever tried those from seed?

On catalog notes.....
I have loved Le Jardin du Gourmet Seed Catalog for years. They used to be sample seed packs for 25 cents, but of course that has changed they are 40cents now. But still a great way to try a variety and not have lots of leftover seeds. Terrific way to get seeds if you only have a small garden. They do also offer large seed packs and plants. There herb plants are beautiful when I have ordered them. The catalog is just a catalog no fancy pictures, but gets the job done and the prices are the best. Oh and no GMO seeds.
They also have a website

Bridegette, "garden porn" cute description of us pouring over seed catalogs.

I will check out the red lime zinnia. Sounds beautiful.

Thanks for the web site. I'm always looking for places to buy live plants I can't find local.

Connie, I've been checking on my container plants - some wintered over - the others I will have to decide to replant or go with something else that will winter over.

We have weeded the garden, emptied the composite barrell into the garden, and yesterday planted okra, pole beans, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, onion tops, and parsley. Keeping our fingers crossed that a freeze is not on the way.

This year is going to be a light gardening year at our homestead. I am going to be having surgery on my Achilles tendon the second week in June. I will have to non-weight bearing for 8 weeks. This eats up two thirds of our growing season. So, we will be planning our greenhouse only with tomatoes, peppers, and some herbs. It is set up to auto water. Hubbie works out of town most of the week. He will be able to weed on the days he is home. Between the greenhouse, the trees, the bushes and the lawn, he will be busy without me to help him.

Sherone I hope all goes well with your up-coming surgery. Your green house sounds wonderful especially the self watering.

A friend of mine has a long back porch where she hangs baskets from end to end. She has a self watering system for the baskets.

I start off in the spring enjoying early morning watering - by August it has become a chore and I start dreaming of fall.

I haven't been behind the Yellow Rose Cottage in a couple of weeks and I was surprised today to see blooming yellow daffodils and paper whites had survived the chickens and Annie.

My original plan was to expand to 2-3 raised beds, but this year is going to have a lot more going on so it looks like I will be sticking to my one shorter bed for vegetables. My perennial bed out front is doing very well, I just have one 6'x6' square to plant in out front, and I'd like to put in some hydrangeas where I ripped out a bunch of English ivy last fall. So those are my two main plans for new garden stuff this year!

Rachel, I know what you mean about having to adapt out garden plans to what is going on in our lives. Your 6'X6' bed sounds really nice. Have fun playing in it. One thing about hydrangeas they are beautiful when dried.

When I moved here five years ago for the first two years I had two large Boston ferns on the front porch. For the last two years I chose to do something else. Been thinking about ferns again so I might put one on each end of the long porch.
