My dog Jaxon recently spent 48 hours in ICU at the animal hospital. On Sunday he was vomiting, could barely walk, and kept collapsing. I rushed him to the vet and they think he has an infection or inflammation deep, deep in his inner ear. His ears look fine. I keep them clean. This is so deep in his ear that I have to take him to a dog neurologist for an MRI. I can't get in to see this dr. till August 16. In the meantime, Jaxon is now home and is on antibiotics, which help. He can walk, but has to be careful, and his head constantly tilts to the right. He has difficulty focusing his eyes, all of which are symptoms of vestibular disease. He seems happy but is very tired all the time. He is four years old and has always been so healthy it's freaky. Has anyone else had this happen to their dog? I know it can happen in older dogs and usually clears up, but it doesn't happen in young dogs unless something is seriously wrong. I'm glad he's feeling better but I wish I didn't have to wait three weeks to get him to this specialist vet (the only pet neurologist in the area). There are two veterinary schools both about three hours away but I don't know if they could help or not. And he might have to stay overnight which means I would have to stay overnight, and this is already costing me a small fortune. Thank God he didn't get sick till after I'd returned to work after being off for six months due to surgery (and half my regular income). I've read that in some of these cases, they have to break the eardrum to get the medicine to where it's needed. He's usually such an energetic bundle of love, and he's still a bundle of love, but it's distressing to see him so tired. My neighbor came over tonight and saw him and he enjoyed that. I have to feed him out of my hand cause that's the only way he can eat. But at least he's eating and not throwing up anymore. Would greatly appreciate any experiences with this issue.

Cindy,
I've not heard of this so I'm unable to offer any suggestions or anything! Sounds pretty serious . . . and scary!
I'll be praying for you and Jaxon!

Cindy, I am not of any help either. I just wanted to let you know that I am keeping you and Jaxon in my thoughts. It breaks my heart to see when dogs are not feeling well. I would do anything for my sweet babies. Hopefully the specialist will get a cancellation that will allow you to go sooner. Keep us posted on how he is doing. Good luck.

Jaxon is much improved. I took him for a walk and he INSISTED on doing the entire route--about 3/4 mile. He got tired near the end and had to rest a bit. He is eating out of his bowl but he is still a bit wobbly and has to navigate the steps (2) carefully. He seems to be his usual happy self a lot of the time but he still gets tired easily. I am just glad he is better. I think he has lost a little weight, but he needed to anyway. He still has the head tilt. I wish I didn't have to keep him on antibiotics till we see the vet.

How old is Jaxon? Depending on the breed of dog, geriatric can be as young as 7 years old depending on the dogs size. What I'm getting at is that if your dog has geriatric vestibular disease (gvd not gdv gastric dilation volvulous). It is generally treated with steroids and anti nausea medications with iv fluids. Hope this helps

He is scheduled for an MRI one week from today. He has some trouble walking, gets off balance, but he is doing OK.

Took Jaxon to the emergency vet last night. A neurologist is going to examine him today. Tentively scheduled for MRI on Monday. He could barely walk last night, his hind legs just wouldn't work right. He also had a fever. He will be there for few days at least. I will visit him later today. it's about 42 miles drive one way.
