Each month a new block (or two) will be posted and a new thread will begin for each new month. I hope many of you will join in and we will have a lot of new quilts in 12 months or less.

You can join in at any time. We'd love to have you!

*****************************************

This month Christy (Christy925) chose our block(s) for July. You can either do one of them or both of them. Both blocks have been around for a long time.

Remember to use scant 1/4" seams when making these blocks.

For the beginner quilters she chose the Contrary Wife block, one that is very easy, and looks great. This will work very easily with stripes and plaids.
http://www.quilterscache.com/C/ContraryWifeBlock.html
And the other block is the Goose Creek block.
http://www.quilterscache.com/G/GooseCreekBlock.html

Helpful Hints for Contrary Wife:
This block is very similar to those we have done. I suggest you make the half-square triangles as we have done on a couple patterns so far, by making individual squares instead of the strip. You will cut two 5" squares of each of the two fabrics instead of 4-7/8" and sew as shown in the pattern.

Helpful hints for the Goose Creek block:
NOTE: These 9-patch blocks are each nine 2-1/2" squares sewn together into a 3 square x 3 square block.
The Goose Creek pattern is also easy, but if you are making the 9-patch units in your colors and not scrappy as the pattern indicates, for each 9-patch you will need five 2-1/2" squares of your darker color and four 2-1/2" squares of your light color (or vice versa). I also think it is great that the pattern gives you three different ways to make the other blocks. You can use any of the methods, but paper piecing might be easiest to get the block done, because you can turn it over and cut along the lines of the paper pattern to trim up the block. Remember, paper piecing really IS done on the back side of the paper. LOL! and you will need to print out 2 of the patterns and be sure to make sure they measure 6-1/2" square before you start them.
Here is a great tutorial on paper piecing from the Internet.
http://ajpadilla.com/tutorials/beginners-corner/paper-piecing-tutorial/what-paper-piecing-getting-started

Your blocks should measure 12-1/2" square when finished.

Have fun with these blocks and post your blocks so we can all see what fabrics you are using.

Here are my two blocks for July:

I found that when I printed out the paper piecing template from the pattern link it was NOT the correct size, so I have made a PDF'd paper piecing template and can send it to anyone via email if you request it from me. Just be sure when you print it out that you measure it to be sure it is 6-1/2" square from your printer BEFORE you make the blocks.

Beautiful blocks Linda. Time to dig through my stash!

Question, for paper piecing, freezer paper can be used? Yes, no?

I love your blocks, Linda! So bright!
I would love your template, please, Linda! U gave never done paper piecing. I think I would just be more confident this first time using the correct size.
Thanks so much, again!
Good choices, Christy! These are pretty blocks!

I'm almost done with the second block.... If I didn't keep getting interrupted It would have been done a week ago grrrrrr.
I've been spending too much time with my grand puppy, he is so cute and when I'm there he follows me all over, I think he knows I'm allergic to him or he's figured out I'm a soft touch when it comes to treats and toys.

I'll try to post a picture.

Denise - Allergic? I've heard people are allergic to cats, but not dogs as much. Can't wait to see your blocks.

Kat - Are you going to join us and make some of the blocks?

This is the puppy. I am allergic to dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, etc, but if I take all my medication and spend short amounts of time with him I think I can build up some tolerance to him. I can be around my sister's daog and my dad's dog for several hours, just have to wash my hands after petting them. He's so cute I just can't stay away from him.

Finally done, between camping, and the heat/humidity finally finished my July locks.

Denise Ann, I am allergic to dogs too and own an Alaskan Malamute. Brushing her is the hardest, but I agree with you that I build up some immunity to her.

Linda, Denise, Julie and Sherry...

Your blocks are wonderful. I'm doing mine this evening after work. Woo Hoo! Linda I'm loving your red/white/blue theme. I'm going to have to add that color combo to my to do list :)

One Contrary Wife finished. This was so quick I think I'll use this pattern for a whole quilt soon.

Great blocks, Julie!

I love the fabrics you chose for this one, Christy. This block would make a wonderful quilt. Would you use sashing, offset the blocks, or have joining squares of a different pattern?
