Each month a new block (or two) will be posted and a new thread will begin for each new month. I hope many of you will join in and we will have a lot of new quilts in 12 months or less. HELPFUL HINTS FOR QUILTERS: When sewing the 1/4" seam, be sure to use a scant 1/4" seam to ensure your blocks end up 12-1/2" before sewing the completed blocks together. For beginning quilters - here is a link to a webpage that explains what quilters mean by "finished" and "unfinished" block sizes. http://quilting.about.com/od/stepbystepquilting/a/What-Does-The-Term-Finished-Size-Mean.htm
*****************************************
I am choosing my block(s) for May early - and yes, I am choosing 2, because you can either do one of them or both of them. For the beginner quilters I chose one that is super easy and another one that is a tiny bit more complicated for the more experienced quitlers.
The first is Nine Patch Variation. This is all squares, no half-square triangles, and uses 3 colors or all scrappy. For beginner quilters, you can make the center 9-patch center square another 4-1/2" square to simplify, if you want. http://www.quilterscache.com/N/NinePatchVariationBlock.html
The second is Mr. Roosevelt's Necktie. I have used this before and it turns out nice in 2-3 colors or scrappy. HINT FOR BEGINNERS OR OTHERS: For the single 3-7/8" square in steps 1 and 2 that the directions say to cut in half, I find it easier to make those squares 4" instead of 3-7/8". First draw a diagonal line corner-to-corner on one of the squares, put the two squares right sides together, and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Then cut apart along the drawn line, press the squares, and trim them up to 3-1/2". I hope this helps. http://www.quilterscache.com/M/MrRooseveltsNecktieBlock.html
Have fun with this. Thanks for joining in. Let's see your squares when you finish.
And if I have confused anyone, please let me know.

Ok. I'm all set! Printed off the patterns and read the directions. I hope to try both! I can see that choosing a pattern will not be difficult since visiting the site. Farmgirl sister #3926

Thank you Judith! I'm sure things will calm down eventually. Or a little rain will settle things down.

Hi Denise, love your blocks. I like how you did the dark and light on the nine patch variation, changing a fabric selection LOL |

So pretty in purples. I love the background fabrics. Are they batiks?
I have my grandtwins here Mon-Thurs and they are home-schooled. I am not getting much of my fun work done because I have to keep on top of them. LOL! I will try to make my blocks this afternoon and post pics.

That's so neat! Can't wait to see them all. Are you going to sash it?

I've just finished my blocks. I remembered I had some fabrics that a friend brought to me from Germany that I had never used. They are mostly reds, whites, and blues, so I am using them plus some of my R/W/Bs. Many of the ones they brought are stripes, with a couple plaids, so I really have to be careful how I cut some block patterns. LOL! (NOTE: The red here has small white polka dots that don't show up in this picture.)
