I just read Libbie's chapter newsletter and loved her idea to teach ourselves one new skill...
Reminded me of a book I bought myself for Christmas last year "YOU CAN DO IT! The Merit Badge Handbook for Grown-up Girls" by Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas.
Organized a lot like the Girl Scout Handbooks we remember from our youths, it gives the basics for different skills and some ideas for trying them out, and some references to find more information. I thought it was a cool idea and even did some of the exercises. It has everything from "Dine In" to "Give your money away" to "Learn the Lingo" to "Get down to the Knitty-Gritty" to "Fly Solo" - lots of farmgirl skills are included...
And there are even sticky-back peel-off badges in the back!

Sounds like something I might just need to read and do. Thanks, Brenda

For some reason where I work, in my department no less, we are getting rid of all of our quilting how to books. So.......I have always wanted to learn to quilt the right way and now I can actually afford a couple of books to learn it. I always try to teach myself something new after I've mastered another new thing. This Christmas, I made 13 scarves on my knifty knitter. Remember me telling you how spastic I was with that? My girls each wore one to work that I made them and people were asking them where they bought them! I think it's so important to keep our minds learning and growing. Just turned 54 the other day and I'm trying to stay as sharp and as informed about everything as I can! And you're right Mary Beth. My life isn't a party but I do always try to dance! Susan |

HA HA! This is funny because I just got home from our Christmas trip to visit the family and I haven't gotten around to reading the newsletter, BUT I had my MIL teach me how to knit while I was there! So I am going to pester my friends and family with knit dishcloths while I practice and then I'll move on to scarves...then my plan, and the reason I finally want to knit, is SOCKS!!! Who knows how long that'll take me, but I'll get there someday. Faith |

Oh you will get there Faith... I love knitting socks..my favorite..but I always have a dishcloth going in the car. I keep a little pouch with needles and a ball of sugar and cream cotton yarn and work on it whenever I am waiting anywhere..I get alot of them done that way..seems like even more in the summer while I wait at baseball games, swimming lessons and like that..but dentist appointments and all too...better than reading people magazines in the waiting rooms..haha. I never tire of dishcloths..and they are so useful. I give a dishcloth wrapped around a good bar of homemade soap and tied with raffia for a small gift lots of times..always nice to have on hand!!

Aunt Jenny, that sounds so cute! Soap is also on my 'to do someday' list...which is very long!
I'm 2 pattern repeats from finishing...I'm doing 3 knit rows and then a purl row so there is a 'rib' stripe on the front...it's turning out very cute and my hands aren't cramping up as bad as I thought they would while knitting. The next dishcloth I'm going to do I'm going to include some strips of tulle for some extra scrubbing power. Have any of you tried to do this? I've done a couple scrubbies by crocheting tulle and they are really nice. |

What a great idea!!! I always keep one of those round crocheted scrubbies made with tulle by my kitchen sink to use when dishwashing. I love them..I never thought about including some in the dishcloth...I will have to get some tulle now to try that! I get the best ideas here!

Got the book yesterday at the library. It looks like a lot of fun. I've always loved being a Girl Scout and was a leader for 4 years, so I like the idea of earning badges. Too bad I can't take them out of the book. Sad about the author dying on 9/11. At least her spirit can live on. |

The book sounds really neat; thanks for sharing this info, Brenda. Loved aeverybody's ideas, too. And the dishcloth knitting pouch in the car, great idea, Aunt Jenny! I had decided to do dishclothes and a nice bar of soap for some Christmas gifts for this coming year.....gotta get busy!! Nance |

Brenda,
Guess what I found on the bargain book table at Wal-Mart today for $5.97!!! The You Can Do It Handbook like you have. I was SO excited; I knew I had read about it somewhere on this forum. So, of course it is on my table now...waiting for everyone to get into bed tonight before it jumps into my hands .
