i learned something new today- it's BOTH!

Many of us have gotten the yo yo bug ----- our own Farmsister,Lady in Red,Peggy Smith has an awesome tutorial on making heart shaped yo yo’s here
http://ladyinredsite.blogspot.com/
we have had awesome heart yo yo swaps and often are asked what they are or what can you do with them.....

But I wanted to know more- so I googled and found many sites showing how to make yo yo’s without buying the yo yo maker—THEN…I accidentally found this term on Pinterest “Suffolk Puff” well….I just had to find out what it was –I mean…is it a yo yo or…so after a few different blogs took forever to open I settled on the following and am sharing an excerpt form it:

http://sewrecycled.blogspot.com/2012/09/suffolk-puffs.html

“This technique dates back to before the Victorian era, 'Puffs' first recorded in 1601. They were made mainly from old worn out clothes and fabric scraps and seem to have originated in Suffolk, England around the 19th Century. Families of agricultural labourers were not keen to waste materials and would sew the pieces together to form quilts, hence the name 'Suffolk Puff' is used for this type of patchwork.”

~~~~~~~~~~~
another great take on the history, and some photos,is this
~*~*~*~*
Seems that when we crossed "the big pond" we changed the name from Suffolk Puff to yo yo…
have you ever seen the dolls made from them? ho cute and frugal!!!
They are fun and addicting; a great project to carry along to doctor appointments or waiting for someone and so many things to use them for –I'm thinking how fun to make a memory quilt or something of a loved one's clothing!
I just wanted to share some knowledge today!
Oh Margo,,,
thank you for the 'history' lesson.. I luv it!
I posted about a yoyo doll called 'Zippy the Clown'....
and here is a picture of a yoyo doll I recently bought at a local Thrift.
I also have a 'McCalls' pattern from back in the early 1970's of yoyo toys, a dog, clown, etc.... I will have to go dig it up later and post a picture....
Yoyo's are great for everything,,, from quilts and toys to decorations on items like pillows and even clothing...
Clover the company who makes the yoyo templates has patterns for craft ideas with yoyos,(check them out on the internet ('Clover'),,
I have the Heart template and the Flower template ... but for the circle ones, I just use a old CD/DVD disk, trace my circle,,, stack about 4 layers of fabric then cut out the circle(s)... I have sized the circles up as well as down to get different finished sizes... let me tell you, the itty bitty ones (size of a dime when completed) are tuff! lo!
One of these days I am going to make a tote bag covered in yoyos... but for now, I just keep a little sewing basket by the idiot box (TV) with pre-cut out circles,,, and just stitch away while watching the TV.
Happy YoYoing!
