I just pulled a ton of canning jars from my ex-husbands basement (techniquically they are mine....)
Any way. I have a stack of the seals for the jars. But I do not want to re-use them and am planning to buy new ones for canning.
Any ideas on what I can do with the old ones? They are in perfect shape (no rust, still shiny) But i do not want to take the chance when caniing my food. But I also don't want to throw them away if I can re-purpose them...

The wide mouth ones make cute coasters. Get the thin cork that comes in sheets or a roll and cut it to fit the bottom, glue it on and you are set. I also use them for storage jars that I will not be canning. Things like dried beans etc. They could be used for freezing in canning jars too. I mark them with a small x I scratch in with a sharp knife tip so I know they are not for canning.
Can't wait to see what the other Sisters recommend!

It would be really neat to make a family tree mobile using them - affix pictures on one side, record memories on the other. Drill small hole in the top of the lid (or use a hammer and small nail to make the hole), and attach to a hanger at different lengths with fishing line.. You can create family "chains" by drilling holes in the tops and bottoms, connecting parents and hanging the line of children beneath them. What a neat conversation piece!

They make a nice clatter and sparkle to keep birds off your garden. Just punch a hole in the edge of them and tie 3 or 4 about an inch apart on a string, then dangle them from a stake or line row marker or whatever in the garden. My girls like to tie on about 10 of them and drape between 2 stakes so they swing and sway real pretty.

Love the windchime and garden ideas. My DH and I are always looking for new ideas to make the garden more farm appealing. I use mine for dry storage and freezing also. (Maybe it's time to replace them)

I have a ton of old, unused, canning lids too. Inherited them with the jars but will not use them for actual canning. I've mainly been using for general food storage like noted above, dried beans, rice, bread crumbs, dried fruits, etc. I keep them all in jars because it just looks prettier! lol |

oh my,,, what great ideas for repurposing the lids....
I especially like the 'garden plant markers' and the for using to deter the birds from our fruit and nut trees...

I use mine for garden markers and punch holes in the. With a nail to label my tomato types by initials. I also tape them to boxes of canned goods and write on them which jam, sauce, etc is in the box.

| Have you ever noticed that when you put your boots away or put them next to your shoes that they fall over at the ankle. I like them to stand tall. I've noticed when I see other ladies wearing there boots, they are worn at the ankle. So I decided that I want mine to stand tall and I want them to last. I didn't have the extra money to buy supports. I had some egg cartons and slid one in my boot. It was perfect and didn't cost me anything. My boots stood tall! Just make sure there isn't an egg in the carton! |

If your homemade pick covers get nasty, use those as a spare. Also use them for covers if you make the new fangled jar meals (salads, etc).
