Maybe a silly thing to some, maybe a necessity to others, but it's heaven to me. Hanging out laundry. As long as it's not raining and it's above freezing - I'm game. So finally, after months of colder than normal temps here in Ohio, I managed to hang out a load. It's a wee one, not my usual size with whites mixed with the darks (again, I don't usually do this).......but I was desperate. I needed this fix, this getting back to nature and roughing it. So I bundled up and trekked out through the snow - falling through to my knees several times in the drifts. But who cares! I loved it!
Anyhoot, notice the extra clothes pins. We're getting wind gusts (according to our weather station affixed to the peak of our house) of 15 mph plus. So I've gotta keep those boogers on the line!

Wow Karen! Good for you because you sure wouldn't catch me out in that weather. I have to say though, that the picture would be perfect for a Farmgirl greeting card. Rough, tough and beautiful.

Oh I cant wait to get back to my clothes line. Hanging clothes on the line is my favorite household chore. I dont like the way my clothes smell in the dryer. My family thinks I am soooo strange when I bring the clothes in off the line I stick my face in them and take a big wiff I LOVE THE SMELL OF CLOTHES OFF THE LINE and I am proud to admit it. LOL Your picture gives me hope that spring is coming. I cant get to my line still too much snow. Did you wear gloves while you hung up your clothes? I agree with Holly perfect Christmas card pic.

Beautiful picture. I also stick my face in the clothes when I take them off the line. I was so happy to put on the clothespin apron & hang clothes out this past weekend.

Wow ladies you inspire me. Gotta get my DH to get that clothes line put up so I can hang my clothes out there. It will be nice to save money on that never ending light bill too!

Casey, a clothespin apron - I was thinking something along that line when I was hanging them up yesterday. To have the pins right there with me at all times, and as many as I want. Hands free! No more wandering back to my picnic table to load or unload my clothespins. Love the idea! I wonder if a tool belt would do?
I had to work yesterday so my hubby had to take them off the line when he got home. He doesn't see the appeal in it at all, and told me that he said a few "This is f*ing ridiculous" a few times. Poor man. Who can resist sticking line dried clothes in your face and take biiig whiff?
I did start out wearing gloves to hang them out but I found it much easier to just use my bare hands. Yeah, it was mighty cold - but I'm farmgirl tough so I persevered. Which makes me wonder, if some kind of plastic glove would suffice in a pinch as they'd not only keep my hands dry but also warm? Just a thought.
My Mom hung out clothes always, as did her Mom. In fact, the clothesline poles she has were her Mom's. She (my Mom) still hangs out her clothes all year and she's in her early 70's. Growing up as a child she would tell me that there was nothing as sweet as crawling into a bed with sheets "done out out on the line."
As a final note, let's not forget the physical benefits of hanging out our duds. The bending, stretching, carrying the basket to the line, etc. I don't have to go far, and I have our picnic table set up near it so I can set my clothes basket and container of pins in it so I don't have to do so much stooping.

One more thing.....
If I can just go one step farther and use up our Gain laundry detergent so I can make that homemade laundry soap that everyone talks about - I'll be one step farther in being more cost conscious AND farmgirl'ish! Unfortunately, it's almost a full bottle. Aaaarrgghh

Karen, lucky you to have a clothesline. Can you believe there are neighborhoods where they aren't allowed??? I haven't had one in years and really miss it. But, we're going to be moving home to the country in Indiana and that's one of the first things on my list. Can't wait to hang the clothes out again. I used to have a bag that hung on the line and held pins. Has anyone seen a pattern for those?

Karen, I have used a nail pouch, from Home Depot, for a clothespin apron before, & it works very well. Now, I am lucky enough to have a pretty flowery one that a friend gave me. It was a set with the apron & a gardening hat, with Tinkerbell on them. She found it on sale at the Disney store. :) It has 3 giant pockets & can hold as many clothespins as I could ever need.
I agree about crawling into sheets "done out on the line". I take a nice big whiff, right before going to sleep every night.
When I was in high school, I thought my grandma was crazy for hanging jeans outside in the middle of winter. Now, I understand & am so glad I learned that from her.

OMG! I looked on your blog and by golly - it sure does! Mine's strung between two trees (the old, farmgirl way!) Thanks to my hubby who is tall and manly (grin) it is high and tight so I can easily put bed linens and towels on it and not have them touch the ground.
Right now (about noonish) it's blowing and snowing like the devil. Under all that we've got that ice - and high winds. Our weather station wind meter (?) is frozen so I can't tell what it's gusting up to.

Would it be sad to say that it was the clothesline (albeit a homemade, countryfied version) that sold me on this farm? LOL Of all the things about this place that I liked......it was this that thrilled me to pieces.
We didn't get too much snow here, it was more the drifting and the wind that made the roads (Rt. 12) so bad. Bring on spring.....I counted this morning and discovered that I've only hung out 3 piddly times. Sad!
Lastly, I found a Lowe's nail apron but it's not as deep as I'd like it but will do for now. I have loads of fabric that I'm going to make one with deeper pockets in it along with a way that I can hang it up in my utility room when I come in. Right now my clothespins are in a wastebasket that I lug to and from the line.

Many years ago I purchased a Clothespin apron from Wal-mart. (It actually has a pin embroidered on one of the pockets. The thing I like best is that it has looooong straps. so I sometimes just leave it tied and slip it over my head like a pouch.
Another hint, I put my towels in the dryer for about 3 minutes and them hang them out. For some reason they do not get a stiff as when I just hang them out.
I too, love the smell of sunshine on line dried clothes.
