Oh Peggy! I was so touched by your story! Did you live in Indiana when you were little? We used to be visited by Santa every year when we were little. My parents took in foster children, lots of them, and a few strays that my oldest sister brought home from school with her. We didn't have much money, but every year someone would leave several boxes of clothes, coats, and toys on our front porch during the night. To this day my parents don't know who it was.

I think it was probably the neighbor who always seemed to have 'too much meat to fit his freezer' when it was butcherin time. He also always 'overplanted' his garden and had 'too many' apple trees for one family. He was the sweetest old man and my favorite house to trick or treat at. He gave each of us kids a whole bag of candy bars! He always had reeses cups for me. They were his and my faves and he would trade one from his shirt pocket for a hug and a kiss on the cheek anytime I seen him.

Life was so much friendlier and more neighborly then. Now days no one would ever dream of helpin anyone that way. You might offend them or they wouldn't take it cause it might be tainted with something or stolen or something. I sure miss those days.

I think I'm gonna plan a Santa trip with my kids for next year. I know a few people who work for the food stamps dept and could probably get a few names to work on. I'm gonna start a Santa jar to put money in each week and I'll get the kids to pitch in a little of their own money. I think it would a total blast!

I'm off for now to get the baby out of her little tub and ready for bed. She still needs her before bed snack and her hot chocolate. I think I'll join her!

Hi all!
Bunny, thank you for that sweet compliment:)
Tammy, I have journals, but I like the idea of writing someone better than just writing to myself about today's happenings!
Darlene, that makes me sad for you that they would even give that to you as a suggestion on your baby:( I'll be praying for you when I'm at my therapy! And I received your package today! Thanks so much!
Peggy, what a wonderful story! That inspires me to do something like that!
I just want to thank you all for inspiring me to be my best person. I have been inspired to do so many good things. Your good thoughts and prayers have all made my days better:)

I think John Denver was wrong; life on a farm is anything but laid back! And as far as the cow jumping over the moon...I think it is plausible.

We just bought 4 heifers today and brought them home to the wonderful fenced pasture that my husband and his workers worked on for 3 long cold days. Only to have one of them jump the fence withing 30 seconds of their arrival. We were in hot pursuit of that graceful beast for 3 hours, and we covered 7 or so miles. Ranch hands from the local Christian camp came to help, but to no avail. It got dark and we had to give up the chase.

Keep us in your prayers that she goes to a local farm so that we can recover her. Better yet, why limit God, that she makes her way back here.

We are all pooped and headed for bed! I have to say, other than the financial loss, it was pretty funny watching that big behind clear the fence and watching everyone chase after her.

Blessings,
Sharon

Again...here we are longing for the "good'ole days" Angela. But it's true...life was better back then and those of us in the "around 50" crowd could probably tell a similar story about the generosity and simplicity of those days!
Sharon, I can just picture it all in my mind. She's probably thinking,"yea, freedom," until she gets cold and hungry. Silly beast. LOL One thing for sure you all got your weeks quota of exercise. LOL
Sleep well, All!

Just wanted to check in quickly, my 3 yr old and I are working on getting over the flu ( I lost 7 lbs. In one day) trying to slowly catch up one everyone's last few days

Lida- thinking of your granddaughter and saying a prayer she gets well quickly

Darlene- I worked for a vet as a tech for several years and although they probably did not approach the subject well, animals actually do pretty well without their eyesight. Glaucoma is so painful that if nothing else works medication wise then surgery isn't too bad a option. I feel for you though, and vets see this stuff so often that sometimes they can lose sight of the owners feelings. I don't recall if you said or not but is she seeing a specialist?

I absolutely love the motivational posts by everyone...nice to read when im feeling horrible :-)
Talk to ya'll soon

SORRY FARMGIRLS...that is not my personal story. So, I went back up and put "Author Unknown". A good friend sent that story to me today and it so touched my heart that I just had to share it. I made copies of it for all our Senior residents today and posted it on their doors. And then emailed it to a zillion people and then posted it for you Ladies also...not even thinking there was no credit given to the Original Story Teller. It was just such a Warm and wonderful Christmas Story...and Angela, I know people that still do those kind of things even today. I believe in the goodness and kindness of most people's hearts. I see God's Love happening all over the place! And I love your idea of doing that with your children next Christmas. Those kind of life lessons only get passed down by example. So, you go girl! Let your light shine!

Dana...I am so sorry that you are so sick! Praying for you and your family. Snuggle close and get well! Hugs from a distance girl...so far I haven't got any ugly colds or flu and I would love to stay that way!

Sharon...sorry for laughing so hysterically but your story was down home funny! I bet you are all exhausted after that little escapade! Even the cow is probably leaned up against a tree wheezing from the chase. lol

Megan...I journal most of my prayers to God. Have many journals that I can take down and re-read different days and see where God and I have traveled together and the lessons He was teaching me. Hopefully some day my children will receive them and their hearts will be touched enough to walk closer with the Lord. I am like Tammy...I love Journals. I watch for them on sale at bookstores and always have 3 or 4 going at once. Maybe one prayer journal, a garden journal, a "My Favorite Quotes" Journal (I collect quotes by famous and not so famous people), And always a Gratitude Journal and a Joy Journal. The Joy Journal tends to be a compilation of all things that bring me joy, pictures, jokes, cartoons, experiences, anything that makes me chuckle or laugh. And when I need a good laugh...I pull it out and am blessed all over again.

Judy...I don't think Sharon is going to have much trouble sleeping tonight...do you? lol

If I can't sleep tonight I'm going to close my eyes and go chase her cow for awhile...beats counting sheep
and a heck of a lot funnier!

Night My Porchies,

Good Day Sisters,

Natalie is still in the hospital. I will stop there this morning on my way to work. Thank you for talking with God about her. My son is home for a couple of days. His birthday was Tuesday but we are celebrating it tonight. I canned strawberry rhubarb pie filling in the spring for his birthday celebration; that pie is his standard request for his birthdays. By this time next year he will be done with his Navy training and most likely be living somewhere a long way from home. I pray he won't be where people are shooting at him.

Complaint- a political pollster called last evening. If the questions had more options for answers I think the poll would be more valid. Instead the answers were A or B. I wanted a choice C for most of the questions. I don't think it will be a very accurate poll when it is reported as news.

Angela- I grew up in a community that takes care of each other. No matter where we have lived we have continued to be surrounded by people like that. This year some friends adopted a co-worker who is having a tough time with life right now. She and her kids are going to have a fantastic Christmas morning because a few people heard that she has a need and have responded. My work team "adopted" for a Christmas a young lady with developmental disabilities who lives on her own and is struggling. Smiles for her on Jesus's birthday morning too! There are lots of generous and rightly-motivated people still around.

Dana- so sorry you have been sick! Be better before the holiday (holy day) comes.

Sharon- Thank you for the story about the escape of the heifer. Having grown up on a dairy farm I have deep appreciation for the craftiness and abilities of cows, heifers and calves to escape their confines. Many times I was late for a school function because I was out helping get the cows back in. I am sure that your escape artist will get herself close to some food nearby. Are you raising them for milk, meat or both?

Tammy- I am inviting myself to your tea party.

Darlene- So sorry about the bedside manner of your vet. As a chaplain I have sat in meetings with surgeons who have the same demeanor when discussing human beings. Hugs and prayers for wisdom.

Gotta get a pie in the oven and get out the door to the hospital and then to a full day at work. It is my favorite day of the year to work- giving out end of the year bonuses to my team!!! My boss believes that any cost cutting savings left at the end of the year go back to the employees because they are the ones who made the sacrifices, so they should reap any rewards.

Peace,
Lida

HAPPY HOLIDAYS ~ Author Unkown

The Good Napkins

This is too good to not share.
I think we are the last generation to know what 'napkins' are.

THE GOOD NAPKINS ... Ahhhhh.

The joys of having girls......

My mother taught me to read when I was four years old (her first mistake).

One day, I was in the bathroom and noticed one of the cabinet doors was ajar.
I read the box in the cabinet.

I then asked my mother why she was keeping ''napkins" in the bathroom.
Didn't they belong in the kitchen?

Not wanting to burden me with unnecessary facts, she told me that
those were for 'special occasions' (her second mistake).

Now, fast forward a few months....
It's Christmas Day, and my folks are leaving to pick up my Uncle and
his wife for dinner.
Mom had assignments for all of us while they were gone. Mine was to
set the table.
When they returned, my Uncle came in first, and immediately burst into laughter.
Next, came his wife who gasped, then began giggling.
Next, came my Father, who roared with laughter.
Then, came Mom, who almost died of embarrassment when she saw each
place setting on the table with a 'special occasion' Kotex napkin at
each plate, with the fork carefully arranged on top.
I had even tucked the little tail in so they didn't hang off of the edge !!
My mother asked me why I used these and, of course, my response sent
the other adults into further fits of laughter.

"But, Mom, you said they were for special occasions !!!"

Darlene...I have an akita/shepherd mix who is completely blind. She is a great, sweet dog. She doesn't bark too much and never bites or nips. She has to stay in a dog run because she wants to chase birds and stuff and she runs into things. We were afraid goin blind would make her mean and she is one big dog! She hasn't changed much at all though. We still take her for walks, they just go alot slower than before and she walks spladdle-legged to keep her balance, but the rest is just the same. I'm sure you'll find your dog reacts much the same to it's sad fate. Animals tend to adjust better than people do.

Peggy, I love your stories. I have one.. not so humorous but left me with a lesson.
My oldest was in cub scouts and I was a den leader and did lots of other jobs in the pack. I had a friend in the next town over that did lots of work helping out people in poverty situations. At Christmas she arranged adoptions of families. Every family needed something different. Some a tree with decorations was enough. Others it was groceries and presents for the kids. Our Cub Scout Pack decided to adopt a large family. Mom, Grandma, son, daughter and Mom had a small daughter about 3 years old. The kids did jobs around their neighborhoods and raised the money themselves. A few of us moms did the shopping. We bought tons of groceries and had a blast shopping for jammies, sweaters, slippers and a few toys for the little girl.
When we arrived at the families house..The mom came out, and her response was.. "just put everything in the kitchen". She then turned away and went back in the house. The presents went in the living room. Grandma was cooking and when we went into the kitchen we could see piles of garbage bags on the back porch. The place was a mess and the little girl was eating donuts for her dinner. It turned out she was actually the daughter of the teenage girl there and the teenager was pregnant again. When we left we got no thank you. No help bringing in the items. It was as if this was life as usual for them. We left and felt taken advantage of. On the way home we decided to stop at a little coffee place to absorb the experience and deal with the let down we all felt. The lesson we discovered.. and this was hard. Was it wasn't our place to judge. We decided on looking at the positives. The little 3 year old would now have fresh fruit as an option to donunts. She would also have some nice clean and new jammies and some fun toys for Christmas. We felt God had taken us to that family and we had no right to the need to feel good. We did what we were led to do and we had a wonderful night shopping together and nothing would take that wonderful feeling away from us.
So not every story is warm and fuzzy but a lesson in humility that God is in charge and we need to just let go of our needs and let him do his stuff. My family decided to adopt a father and his son at the same time. They needed a tree, ornaments and a coat for the little boy. We went as a family to shop and then took everything over to them. They lived in a tiny trailer and were so greatful. They insisted on us coming in.. mind you this was a tiny tiny trailer. We crammed in a small seating area and the father made us coffee and hot chocolate. The difference was amazing compared to the other family. I know it made an impact on my son. He was amazed at how tiny the trailer was and didn't know there were people that lived like that.
I have done random acts of kindness before finally learning to let go of what it did for me.. just hearing Gods voice in my head to do what he was commanding.
Anyway, hope this touches you in some way.

Such happy stories to share on the porch:)
Sharon, I'll be praying that she makes her way back home:)
Dana, you and your recovering baby will be in my prayers.
Peggy, even if they aren't your stories, they still bring light to the porch. And I'm really getting into the writing to God. I think I might start keeping more journals.
Lida, that's so nice of your company to do that for your employees!
Bunny, that's a sweet story! I read in my devotional the other day about a vet who sewed up a wounded dog, gave him shelter, and fed him. But then the dog ran away. The vet thought that the dog was so ungrateful, but the next night, the dog showed up with a friend in need. The point was that sometimes we don't see the scope of what we do, but that we should still be glad we did it, because to someone it may have made a difference.
Today was another day! TGIF tomorrow, though. Then the weekend! Catching up on homework, and hopefully I'll make it to my cousin's basketball game for the first time. That would be so fun. I also have to find service on short notice for Monday. I was thinking of going to St. Ben's soup kitchen, but I don't know what help I would be in my condition. Any suggestions? It has to be interacting with the poor and vulnerable. Ach! Well, off to finish math!

I have had more than one angel cross my path this past month.

We were given a huge food basket from a local church, then had another one show up with presents!

We were at walmart the other day to get my oldest some new undies, hers had lost their waistband. We were gonna pay for them with the last of my hubby's soda money. He had $5 left to buy his 2 liters for while he is workin. As we were about to walk in the doors a man approached us and said their prayer group was handin out 5 dollar bills that night and wanted to know our last name to add to their prayer list. I nearly cried.

I now have gifts for my girls, enough food to share with my grandparents, and my hubby can have his sodas for 1 more week. I should have enough between the aluminum cans we've collected and the ones my folks have collected to get his soda money for the week after christmas, then he'll have a paycheck! Yeah!

We might be limpin and stumblin along, but we're still movin forward. We'll have a christmas this year even if it's all thanks to our little angels!

Bunny...loved your story...and what great lessons! It is funny because my Scout Troupe and I had a very similar experience to yours...except I remember that the people seemed honestly appreciative...but they had more food in their house and more gifts under their tree than probably any member of my Troupe had including my children, husband and me. And that left us all feeling like we just helped a family who wasn't needy at all. BUT...I tried to tell my kids (and myself) that we really couldn't judge their circumstances because we didn't know what they truly were going through. And like you said, "We just have to listen to God's prompting...and not second Guess Him...just be obedient to His will." He see's the bigger picture and He will work it all out just like it should be. Our job is to listen and obey...not judge. ~ Thanks so much for sharing ...
it brought back some old memories and lessons learned for me too.

Angela...thanks for sharing your Families blessings too. I know that you guys always bless others in your extended family when you are blessed with anything...so, it is awesome to see God stretching the blessings to help even more people than just yourselves. You have very unselfish hearts! ~Speaking of hearts...I hope yours is doing better!

Hi Pam and Megan...good to see you two on the Porch tonight too! You two lovely ladies are always a delight to us all!

Well...I had a busy day doing laundry, knitting, doing Yogo In Bed and taking a mile walk with Bella...Then I was tired and took a nice long nap. Now it is bed time... I just finished the dishes and feel like calling it a night. After some Hot Chocolate and Toast...which I left on the Porch for everyone too. Enjoy on this Cold Night!

Good Morning, Fellow Porch Sitters. All your stories are so inspiring. I will keep all of you in my prayers. And please remember, God is love. I have seen it too many times to doubt, from the smallest to the biggest act--when we smile at someone we do not know, during the holidays when people donate gifts despite the wretched economy, and after 9/11 here in NY. Good morning everybody. Wow so much going on in just a day I missed visiting.

Megan glad you're back at school. How have you're first days back been? How about reading to kids at the hospital or at a homeless shelter?

I loved that Christmas story. It was so touching. I hope you don't mind but I sent it to a couple of my female soldiers who are friends of mine. That would be a great video to do - bet it would go viral.

I loved the visual of the cow jumping the fence. Too funny. I love starting my mornings chuckling :O)

Today is our Christmas party at work. We're having a bowling and pizza party this year which sounds like it will be a lot of fun. The Army outdid themselves getting donations this year for the kids and all the kids will be getting a stocking stuffed with hats, mittens, stuffed bears, water bottles and other misc little toy items. I think all the kids also get a gift in addition to the stocking. IT will be fun to see the kids' faces tonight when Santa gives them their stockings and gifts.

Monday my oldest son, who is in the Army, will be coming home for a week for Christmas. I'm so excited to be seeing him. He hasn't been home since February when he got back from Iraq. He's being redeployed in February so I'm hoping he'll get to come home once more before then. Plan to do lots of baking before and while he's home. Hopefully there won't be too much drama with the ex while he's here. My weekend will be spent attempting to get our computer room cleaned up so we can put a mattress on the floor for him to sleep on. We really need a bigger house LOL

I just love this one-so perfect for us to remember
Dear Beautiful Girl,

Most people do the best they can. Most people are doing all that they can to make their way through the world and make good decisions and to love and to feel loved.

Sometimes we expect more out of people than they could possibly give. Sometimes we think others think exactly as we think, and we expect them to react the way we would react, behave the way that we would behave and to do what we would do in any given situation...and then we are disappointed and jaded when they don't.

We bring ourselves and others so much pain when we have great expectations for others. Unconditional love, kindness and acceptance means that there are no expectations of others. We love for the sake of loving, even if we never get love in return. We are kind for the sake of being kind, even if the kindness is never returned. We accept for the sake of accepting, even if that acceptance is not returned in ways that we might have expected.

Take pressure off of yourself, dear friend, and drop all expectations that you have of others. We can never know what is going on in a person's life, in their heart. We can never know what their intentions are or what they are truly thinking or planning. Expecting, assuming and creating conditions just leads to pain for everybody.

Love for the sake of loving...it is the way to peace.
xoxo

Thanks Pam! That is so beautiful....

I can only stay for a bit, I brought some salted caramel cookies and a pot of "regular 'ole black tea". I wanted/needed to pop out and thank a few ladies for their cards and well-wishes.
Peggy - our resident poet and encourager! Thank you for the lovely card and awesome poem - you are a gift in so many ways.
Judy - thank you for the sweet card, tea and stickers! I love to gussy up my presents and stickers are just the thing when you're busy.
Darlene - WOW! Thank you for the stickers and ornament. I am amazed what you can do considering the pain you're having and loss of feeling in your hands. (And you package everything so sweetly.)It is beautiful and will always be on display. I really appreciate the crown of thorns you added. My DH made one for me several years ago from a thorn tree that grows where he works {for 2 weeks yet. ; )} Every year it circles the top of our Christmas tree right under the angel. She heralds the "Good News that will be for all men" and the crown of thorns reminds us that the news was only "good" because of the suffering that Jesus was willing to do for us on the cross.

I wish I could stay longer - it sure has been a busy porch lately, I'm trying to catch up on the stories. You all either make me laugh or cry!

Hello porchies. Just stopping in for a minute to play catch-up and to say Hey. Still working around our "Handy-Man". Wow,...yesterday he pulled our old antiquated ceiling light down in our kitchen to check it out and he was shocked. Looking at those old bare, hot wires, this old house should have been a pile of ashes, or was ready to become one....But for God's Grace & Mercy! Praise His sweet name. We were shocked at the way someone years ago had wired this place. It would blow your mind. Every day we discover another cheaply rigged up bunch of bare wires. It kept me from sleeping last night thinking about it.
Also I would appreciate prayer for my Mom and our family. My Aunt died yesterday of a brain anurism...no warning...just fell over. Bad night for us.She was only 61.
Thanks girls!

Judy...so sorry to hear about your Aunt. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now...but you have such a powerfully strong and positive attitude (even if you feel otherwise on the inside). Will be praying for you and your family and also praying that God continues to protect you all from that faulty wiring in your house until it gets replaced. He has protected you thus far...I am sure He isn't going to let you down now...so sleep peacefully and don't fret about what you can't control at the moment.

Staci...are those cookies another one of your world famous recipes? Would you mind sharing that recipe??? Sounds delicious! Thanks for leaving us some to try. :+) I am afraid that you left my mouth watering for more. Hee hee!

Pam...I signed up for the Brave Girls Newsletter today. Thanks for your email also and Happy Birthday to Mark! Tell him Mom sends a B-day Hug! A Steak Dinner sounds good. I am trying to eat more protein at the moment so that I'm not craving sweets so much. My oldest son sent me a $75.00 Rest. Gift Coupon for Christmas...and you go through a list of Restaurants that participate to use it. So, what is a good Steak Place that you guys like to go to in Portland...maybe it will be on the list? Maybe my hubby and I will use it on Christmas Eve...we love to go out to dinner that night.

Well, I am going to go watch Oprah give away lots of Christmas Goodies. I missed the first airing of this show last time...as that was the day I was at the Cardiologist. So, don't want to miss it today or Monday...it is my favorite show she does each year. Doesn't it make your heart happy to watch other people get blessed!? Does mine...I just love it!

Chat more later!
Blessings,

I learned something today. I have always wondered at how my grandmas hands stayed so soft without any lotion. She never had a problem with the dirt from the garden stickin to her hands and she always told me it was all the lotion I used that made it stick to mine. I have been makin eveything possible from scratch lately and have found my hands always greasy. I haven't been usin any lotion since my hands haven't been dryin out and itchin.

My hubby said my hands were really soft tonight. The only thing I've done to them is use them to make the corned beef hash burgers! Then I realized they felt a little greasy agian. I hadn't washed them yet since I was still workin on dinner. I had only wiped them on my towel. All the oil, grease, and butter they come in contact with every day is keepin them soft despite the repeated washins all day long!

Now I know grandmas secret. Her hands still look so much younger than her 80+ years. I wonder if mine will too?

Hi all!
Peggy, it's always good to see you on the porch too:)
Tammy, it's been really nice to be back at school, but these past four days back have been so long! TGIF, right? But I missed school a lot, and I'm glad to be back.
Thanks for the letter Pam. Sometimes we put expectations on people without knowing their circumstances. Your daily letters are so nice!
Staci, thanks for popping in! How's your husband's search doing?
Judy, I'm so sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in my prayers.
Angela, that's a funny! Maybe that's what I have to do to keep my hands from drying out!
So, it's really, really, really cold here! I got out of my car to go home after school, and it was about 6:30ish, and it was freezing! But living in Wisconsin all my life has done me good, and although it was cold, I barely notice it anymore! This weekend I will be catching up on as much work as I can for Monday. I really don't want to be swamped over my Christmas break, which starts Wednesday. I'm so happy for Christmas to come! A tradition my family has is that starting at 7 on Christmas Eve, we watch A Christmas Story for 24 hours straight on TBS. My Mom and I practically know the movie by heart! Well, off to bed! I'm going to my cousin's basketball game in the morning; the first I've been able to make it to!
God's and Holiday's Blessings,
Megan aka Loretta Rae
