I just found out this week (after I made my dog a bed with cedar chips!) that Cedar is horrible for most dogs! Not only is it a substance that most dogs are allegic to or can develop allergies to- I was told that they can breath in the cedar dust- and for some dogs- it can kill them!!

I had to put my wonderful smelling cedar chips out in the dirt by my patio- oh well- at least I have good smelling mulch now.

It is possible to buy cedar shavings with no dust in them. I have Labrador Retrievers and they have been sleeping in cedar shavings in their dog houses for 30 years with no problems. If your chips are inside a bed, you should have no problem at all.

All I know is my vet told me to get rid of them. She said they are one of the worst bedding types for dogs and problems creep up on a lot of dogs from them. She did say not all dogs are affected by them- so perhaps your labs are resilient to them. :)

I was told the same thing by my vet Alyssa, in fact she said most critters (even hamsters) don't cope well with cedar, it is hard on their livers. I know that raising meat birds on cedar chips is a big no-no, so we now use pine. It's too bad, as cedar here is dirt cheap and a great odor absorber.
