Has anyone seen the obnoxious ads regarding the benefits of HFCS?
I laughed out loud at their nerve! I was unable to catch their website to post. Will try to catch it the next time this hysterical commercial is on.

I had the same, jaw dropping response. I think it's sponsered by the corn growers association. Gosh, don't even get me STARTED about this. It's not that it's just bad for you (lets not even mention that all commercial corn is GMO seed) it's that it in EVERYTHING! Have you tried buying stuff without HFCS in it? If you get the opportunity, watch the documentary, "King Korn". Quite eye opening....oh, oh, and check out this website www.hfcsfacts.com

Thanks Julie, for posting the website. I didn't catch it when I watched the commercial.
UNREAL how they are trying to spin this and justify its use.

I saw the ad. I was amazed. Ad agencies can put a postive spin on anything!!!!! It must mean someone's pocketbook is getting hit hard. Corn growers should not be concerned. Their product will always be in demand, no matter what. We could not live without corn!!! Their product can even produce bio-fuel. That would be a better use.

OMG, I can't believe that commercial!
The facts.....the facts!!!!!
The facts are, and I am NOT trying to hurt any one's feelings, please take this from a fellow morbidly obese sister, that we are living in a obese country, and this stuff is in about every thing, and is a TON of calories!! And it's not in moderation in anything!
I am a diabetic, I never knew how much stuff had this in it, till becoming diabetic and reading labels.
Get this, speghetti sauce on the shelf with HFCS, has around 150, and upwards of 250 calories per a 1/2 cup. There is about 3 brands out there on the shelves that have ONE version with out HFCS, and their calories-25 to 50 calories per a 1/2 cup!
Well people may say that let's go with the highest cal, non HFCS sauce 50 cals, and the lowest cal HFCS sauce 150 calories. That's 100 calories right there! And not many only have 1/2 cup of sauce! Do this times every thing out there we eat, or may eat, and we wonder why in the heck America is obese? It's no mystery here folks!
Not only that, but these companies are using HFCS as a cheap filler. It does absolutely nothing for the food, no nutritional value, the taste, well I've tasted speg sauce with and with out the HFCS and the HFCS did not taste any better then the one with out! All it did was add a ton of carbs (bad carbs, no useful nutrients from these carbs, no fiber from these carbs, no vitamins from these carbs, etc) and calories to my days food intake.
Since then I do NOT buy anything with HFCS. It's just a bunch of calories, that turn to fat, that kills us-diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, etc.
So what do they "say".... (the commercial's question was what do they say?" they say, it makes us fat, and kills us! That's what "they" say!
UHG. I really can't believe they are putting this spin on it. I've been trying to shout from the roof tops to my diabetic family members to get off the HFCS and now these commercials are going to make them think differently probably. Cause they like to grasp at straws to keep eating their terrible diets, meanwhile literally going blind, losing their limbs, and being wheel chair bound.....yeah HFCS is wonderful. About as wonderful as transfats! lol haha Again in moderation....lol haha

Oh my goodness, gosh I hope no one swallows these commercials. Glad we don't get'em up here. They kind of remind me of the 'clean coal' commercials that were running for a while. The commercials were trying to convince us that burning coal was environmentally friendly. Geez, give us some credit, eh?
The fact that they can call HFCS 'natural' is astonishing. And that it's the same as the honey that I buy from the farmer's market, no way- not buying it.
Oh and I second (third?) recc'ing King Korn, really nice little documentary of two young guys that find out that they are made of corn :) and their journey to find out how in the heck that happened.

The reason they are running these ads are because people are becoming aware of HFCS and what it does and the powers that be don't like the fact that people are making better choices. Yes, people will fall for it. My husband did. He's even diabetic. People don't like to take the effort and responsibility of knowing what is good for them... if the commercial says it's okay, then it must be, right? Throwup!! What kills me, and I pointed this out to my hubby, is that they state "in moderation", how can it be in moderation when it's in everything processed? Too bad most Americans don't know or have the inclination to cook/bake real food. Think of all the people in our country who would starve if they couldn't open a box or use a mircowave to cook a meal. When my grandbabies ask me why I don't buy something instead of make it myself, I tell them I'm a real person and I eat real food. There is a reason there is a Slow Food Movement. Just another reason not to watch TV. Okay, I'm not frothing at the mouth anymore,LOL The propaganda really gets to me tho. Sorry about the soapbox!! Warmly,

It just amazes me that big industry and our own government still think that the American people are so stupid as to believe everything they spoon-feed us! I don't believe any of them anymore until after I look into it myself. It's just disgusting!

The King Corn website is www.kingcorn.net
This film tours around the mid-west here...you can often find it at Universities or indy theaters. I saw it recently on IFC (the independant film chanel). So enlightening and entertaining.

This is what upset me the most!!! I have a friend who thinks she is trying to do better for her family by growing her own veggies, but the rest of teh stuff they eat is crappy yucky HFCS/preservative/filler laden "junk" food. Not that I am perfect by any stretch, but I do turn things over and look at the ingredients before I buy it. I TRY not to buy anything with HFCS in it, and go fresh produce etc whenever possible.
She is their perfect target audience.

Yup, that's exactly who those commercials are aimed at. And they make the informed consumer look like they are stupid for even questioning the "goodness of corn". The maddening thing is that HFCS is everywhere and if it's not HFCS it's just plain sugar. Who needs sugar in their frozen vegetables? No wonder we are all overweight, underexercised and fatigued! You can't get away from it unless you take a magnifying glass and 3 extra hours when you go grocery shopping.

Kate, that's just sad. We all have our back-sliding moments, but for the most part I do really well at avoiding the "junk". More people need to be more educated. Just like we have to take our own health into our own hands, we HAVE to take our nutrition into our own hands as well. Well, I suppose one would follow the other. But there are just far too many folks who have no idea or worse are in total denial. It's just easier to buy and eat what they shove at us than to do the work of REAL cooking for ourselves. It's fast, it's convenient; no muss, no fuss. And the FDA approved it, right? Of course, I'm being sarcastic. But this was the way I used to think! So, I know there are lots more out there that think that same way. Most folks won't even consider changing their eating/shopping habits until they get really sick and they do some research and have that "aha!" moment.
Here is one more reason to promote MaryJane, her books, magazines and everything. Educate, educate, educate! We are being bombarded with all the bad stuff and all the propaganda that comes with it. It's past time to return the bombardment with GOOD stuff.

Let me throw another little scary thing into the mix. I've recently read the people who provide seed are pushing GMO sugar beets, so now even plain ole sugar is going to have a little frankenstein twist to it. Buy organic, non GMO.

Teresa Sue- You are right. My hometown is a huge sugar beet town. All farmers are now planting "Round-up Ready" sugar beets so they can "carpet bomb" roundup on all the fields and grow "perfect" sugar beets.
Sign me up for a lifetime supply of Organic raw sugar please! I am so disappointed in my hometown. :(

Oh no...round-up is perfectly safe as it was initially developed as a water treatment additive---you can hear the sarcasm here right? I am tired of trying to encourage people to just be 'informed' about the stuff in their food only to get that blank look. Why not just err on the side of caution and NOT eat it?

oh my gosh... all my worst fears are being realized. my husband and i have been researching this topic and others (mostly related to cholesterol) for some time now. and there was just a conversation in one of my classes over high fructose corn syrup... one woman commented as she looked at the contents of her SoBe drink "this is like one of the only drinks i can find that doesn't contain HFCS. i've heard it's one of the leading factors for heart disease." another woman commented "i know! you can't buy anything without it these days! bread. bottled green tea." i don't know about the heart disease thing, if it's a fact or not. if anyone knows, please share. if it is true, that's absolutely frightening. but i felt pretty good sitting there.... i make my own bread and brew my own green tea and rarely buy processed drinks. except frozen ones. someday it is my dream to cut out as much processed food and drink as i possibly can..... the main reason? because it's so scary that there is even a possibility this stuff can contribute to cancer, heart disease, and a ton of other stuff. forget it! i don't even want the risk! |
