Karen,
Thanks for the compliment about the article. I love writing and I really love writing about all the special people I meet that are doing such amazing things. I feel so blessed to know so many amazing talented people. Karen (one of the moki time writers) has just started or re-started doing water colors again, and she is very good, so I am sure I will be posting those soon as well. Arent people amazing? I mean really, so facinating.

Rene - I loved your article too, you have such a positive spirit, it really shines!!

Alee - we do Christmas a variety of ways. With my husband's family we all draw names - there are 22 of us. We all get presents for his parents and they get an individual gift for each of us. With my family there are a lot of aunts and uncles so we do gift baskets - I do jam and cookies, one aunt and uncle make pesto from their garden every year and give the makings for a pasta dinner, my dad does christmas cookies etc.
Then in my family I am the only child with the only grandchild so my mom and dad tend to over do it a little but with stuff like books and art so it isn't presents just for the sake of presents. My son who is 16 is the hard one, I would love to get him a really nice atlas or something but I know he is too young to appreciate it. At the same time I refuse to buy video games, I think we have settled on a ticket package for he and my husband to go see college basketball games together - we figure the memory of the experience would last a long time.
I have made serious progress on the gifts I am making and the gifts I am buying, I may be completely done by December. I hope so because I want to do some little crafty stuff - like make the ornaments in the new MJF - and I have about 4 years of Christmas recipes saved up that I have yet to try
Talk to y'all soon

Morning Mavens, hope everybody had a nice week-end. How was the weather for ya'll?
I have been quite busy with a list of things to do, like packing a few grocery items in the container for where ever we are heading too, spices, organic flour and grains and peanut butter to name a few.
Amy Grace you have asked where I was going. Still no news. There are 2 possibilities. Either we go together with Raymond in a new country where he works as normal, either he commutes, which means then that home would be in France where I would stay and he would go back and forth for his work to any country where he is employed. Usually the communting jobs are 5 weeks at work and 5 weeks home but since you travel on your free time, it is more likely 5 weeks at work and 4 weeks and 3 days at home.
At the moment openings are far east, Thailand and Malaysia but anything can happen, we will see.
This week is quite busy at home, I am flying to France this coming friday and it seems everybody wants a piece of me before I go. Will be chatting with you tonight your time, in between keep well and start happily the new week.

Good morning, mavens! Well, we're getting settled in again here back at the old homeplace. Yesterday Robbie mulched the leaves that had built up in our yard. Some went on our existing compost piles and the rest went on the new garden we're working up for next year! First he wet newspapers and put those down on the new ground then covered it all with the leaves. We're planning to get manure from our friends in the next week or so, then put more leaves on and a couple of layers of peat in the mix. That will probably be all the lasagna layers for this year. The area is already 3 times the size of this year's garden - which wasn't very big at all. We hope to keep working at it over the next few weeks. I want to get a couple of other plots ready for next year too. One for gourds and winter squash; the other for potatoes. The potato patch I'm hoping to have 15-18 inches of lasagna layers. That way we can have no-dig potatoes. I'm so excited about that. We probably haven't had our own potatoes for at least 10 years. My dad didn't have much luck with them the last few years he tried and he's been gone six years. We had a few volunteer ones come up in our compost pile this year so that gives me hope for the lasagna method and our own crop next year.

I spent yesterday working around the kitchen. The next couple of weeks are devoted to getting the house presentable and making a couple of aprons for my mother- and sister-in-law. I want to make a couple of Christmas aprons and send them early so they have them for the season, along with a copy of MJ's magazine.

I'll be checking in today and chatting tonight. I may get here late as we're having our pictures taken for the church directory tonight but I will be here. I so wanted to hide in the bedroom, get on the laptop and chat last Monday but restrained myself and watched a movie with the family instead.

Have a great day, mavens! Good morning, Ralph! Good night, Corinne!

God bless -

Mornin Sam and the rest of my Mavens!
What a weekend! I simply cannot put into words how wonderful this was for me. I cant remember a time when I've smiled so much! Lora is an absolute hoot! Cute as a button to boot! The weather was horrible all wknd long, but we made the best of it. Saturday we headed up to Medina to see the AI ROOT company. Its an old bee keeping company that pretty much founded/settled the town of Medina. You can read more about it on the BEES KNEES thread over in....aww heck I cant remember. Just click on my name and see where I've been! We shopped there and walked across the parking lot to the DEPOT. It is an OLD train depot turned antique place. It was really cool and crammed to the gills with stuff.... oh, I almost forgot. We stopped at an antique mall on the way into Medina and snooped around there. That was probably the best stop all day! I also took the "scenic" route home and stopped at my "new" organic store. That was neat. Sat night we had my hubby's family over and ate chili, cake and whatever else. It was way to cold and miserable to be outside. Next year I will go back to doing the October dates and not wait. Sunday we woke up to snow. We decided to drive to the lake (Lake Erie) anyway. To say it was frigid is an understatement. But we braved the wind and rain and snow and walked along the beach anyways! Lora found a rock shaped like a heart and I gathered handfuls of freshwater shells to make jewelry out of. We drove through the "ritzy" part of town called the Lagoon and looked at all the summer homes and docked boats. The next time someone comes to Ohio I pray for good weather so that we can go to Amish Country and points south. We did the northern route this time. Of course, time went so fast.... not nearly enough time to see/share/do it all.
I exchanged my Christmas gift with Lora. I will let her tell you if she liked it or not! And she gave me the sweetest felted Christmas Banner and a pinkeep for my birthday. I absolutely love them! She is very talented! We got along famously (like I had any doubts) and it felt as if I've been her friend for years. Now, I am anxiously awaiting the Spring Fling..... I cant wait to do it all again! I already miss her!

Good morning/evening Mavens
Hope y'all had a great weekend. John and I went to our place in Idaho and burnt as much slash as possible, finally decided on the site where we are going to build, and decided where we are going to put the entrance road. I just want to get started, but we have to wait until spring. Today John is putting up new surround around the bathtub, so I'm going to do a quick home blessing of sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, changing sheets, then head upstairs to start cleaning so I'll be out of his way. I've got nine for Thanksgiveing and yesterday, my daughter, Autumn, called and she and her husband, and their three foster children will be here for Christmas. It'll be fun and crazy here with fourteen for Christmas. It will be such a hoot with seven grandbeasties!
Still waiting for my SSE catalogs. Just as well they are not here as I wouldn't want to do anything but drool over them, lol.
Have a great day Mavens.

It seems like you had so much fun you two, makes me feel happy that you had this time together. When it comes to sharing and having goods time, we build memories for a life time. Now, please post the pics so we can see you laughing and goofing around.
Dawn and Lora and everyone, please send me your contacts like phone, cell or Skype and I will add them to the Mavens list. Remember I am leaving very early saturday morning. At the moment, I have Karen's, Teresa Sue's and Rene's. With mine that makes only 4.

Rene: I really loved the article. You bring it to life.

Alee: Christmas at my place is fairly bittersweet. I dont say this to garner sympathy, it just simply is. I dont have good memories of childhood holidays, and when I was a young mother, the holidays were divided. Everyone on in-law and my mothers side goes so over the top for Christmas that it sucks the life out of enjoying it. Now when I go to visit with my dads family (West Virginia) its a down home Christmas with music and laughter. My dad has 13 surviving brothers and sisters and they all sing. Our gift exchange is simple: girls bring a girl gift, boys bring a boy gift, if you have young children your are responsible for bringing something for each of them. We throw all the gifts in the middle of the room and start with January birthdays and whoever has a b-day in Januray gets to pick out a gift first, and so on through the months. Then it get interesting..... after all the gifts are open, there is a 30 second time frame where you can "steal" someone else's gift. You can steal as many times, but you have to relinquish your gift so that everyone still has one to keep. Its silly, but fun. As for Jerry and I, we'd be happy to veg out in the living room, nap and eat and play with the dogs or go for a walk in the woods. Thats my idea of a perfect Christmas!

Dawn, sounds like you had a wonderful time. I think you and Lora would have a wonderful time under any circumstances, no matter the weather.

TS, whenever I read about your plans for building it makes me dream of our own place on the lower land. But that's way way way in the future - I hope (not the in the future part, just that it will actually happen!).

Corinne, hang in there, girlfriend. I understand why everyone would want some time with you when you come to visit. I want time with you and we haven't even met yet!

Hi, Annika! See you over at the "maybe it's the die in" thread..............

Hello, Train!!!!

Wowweeeeeeeee!! What a weekend! It was a total blast. Did I ever need that. We had more fun than two farmgirls ought to have and stay out of jail!! The antique shops were neat and I really liked the A I Root Company. I came home with all kinds of treasures. I totally LOVED my Christmas gifties from Dawn. Generous doesn't even begin to describe her. In addition to being a great hostess, she is a great cook! I totally pigged out on chicken and dumplings. Her hubby was just a pleasant. We cracked jokes all weekend.

The lake was awsome (cold), but awsome. That rock I found is so cool. It really does look like a heart! I got a couple of shells and a goofy looking piece of drift wood. (at least I hope that's what is was) Dawn thought maybe is was petrified sea gull poo.

Dawn took me out to the barn to meet the "girls". They were lovely. Nice curtains too.

All in all it was a great weekend. And yes it was way too short. I can't wait to go back.

Still coming down!

Good morning Mavens, hope you had a great day yesterday.
Glad to hear, you that were ill, are on the mend. I trust everyone is on the run getting ready for the holidays or in Corinne's case, moving. Corinne I have moved a few times at this time of year also, so my heart is with you.
Dawn I am not going to get to work on your Christmas present until after Thanksgiving, I'll be making the deadline by the skin of my teeth!
How many of you that are reading AVM have gone ahead and finished the book?
Well Mavens, I'm off to cook at the cafe this morning, have a great day! Corinne, sweet dreams.

Tina, thanks for chiming in about the chat time. I was starting to think everyone got a "no chat tonight" message but me. To the rest of you, no there wasn't a message sent out. At least I don't think there was....

Corinne, Marcy's blurb is on page 110, Tina is honorably mentioned on page 95 and she and hubby's graphics business (www.wilsongraphics.net) is mentioned on page 94, and my blurb is on page 6. I know things are hectic for you right now - thought I give you a little help in locating the mavens in this issue.

TS, I haven't finished the book yet. I was about 3/4 of the way through when we started the book club. I went back to the begining of the book and have just been reading along since then. And, my flying friend, I'm there with ya on the decluttering. I wasn't very productive yesterday as I got too caught up in listening to the Poisonwood Bible on tape (finished it last night right before going to bed). Today is errand day and when I come home, look out! If I have an ounce of energy left, I'm going to use it to whirlwind my way through the living room..........or maybe the bedroom.

Corinne, as always, it's lovely to find your posts here. And I would love to come help with your sewing room! Too bad I can't just twitch my nose or blink my eyes and be there. Can you just imagine what it would be like if we could do that? The mavens would be popping in on each other all the time. Maybe that would be enough motivation to keep my house clean!

Lora, so glad your trip to Dawnzo's was fabuloso. Wouldn't expect anything less. The two of you make a great pair.

To the rest of my maven friends, good morning. Hope everyone is doing well.

God bless -

I did not technically forget about chat time last night.... I had my cell phone alarm programed for it. As it went off, I was under a pile of sewie scraps, needle in hand and thought: If I'm to get ANYTHING done for Christmas, I must make time for it, and I was almost done sewing those scrappies together, so I made a managerial decision to skip. SO SORRY!

Like Annika said, things around MavenVille are gonna be slow til seed season comes in. Then we are gonna light up this forum like a blazing Christmas tree!!
