A New Update! Finally!
I put the project on hold as some of you sent in embroidered patches that I wanted to incorporate. Then life got busy. So, today I worked on the quilts. I finished the top of Aria's, and made Julia's. Tomorrow I will cut the batting and the backing for the quilts, and assemble them. I hope to have these two finished tomorrow. Then I just have two more to do- one for Reo (Aria's brother, and one for Aria's sister)
Aria's Quilt so far: 8 squares by 10 squares
Julia's Quilt so far: 7 squares x9 squares
The Center
Hi There!
This is the first one that I have made for the family! It is currently 4ftx3ft. Should I make it 5x4ft? I know some of you are doing embroidered squares, so I think I will make them into pockets.
It has come together nicely even though it is wrinkled in this pic. Part of that is because I laid it on on the snow and partly because I haven't washed or pressed it yet. Please let me know what you think!!
Hey ladies! Lets make a quilt for Julia and her daughter! Her daughter was just diagnosed with Leukemia.
So here's the deal. I'm not the best sewer in the world, but I am willing to take a stab at this project. I would love to make them matching jean quilts since I am sure they will have to be spending time in cold hospital rooms.
If you can spare a leg or two of an old pair of jeans or if you can run down to your thrift store and buy a pair to send along, please do! Email me for my address. I will start working on the quilt with jeans that I have laying around. I will make the quilt out of 6 inch blocks- so if you want to pre-cut them for me, please pre-cut to 7 inches (so I have a margin for error.
I already have quilt batting and material to use as backing. Lets do this really quick like so we can get them their goodies soon!

I'll give it a go. I have a bunch of too small jeans that I will never get my plump *cough* booty back in and would love to help. Give me a day to dig them out of storage and I'll have Drew drop them off on the way to work.

Oh crap....I just donated several pairs of jeans to Goodwill last week. However, I think I may still have some denim material here. Have you ever heard of the "prayer blankets"? It is really growing here in our area. They are no sew blankets of flannel material with knots tied to secure both pieces. Each time you tie a knot, you say a prayer for the person the blanket is for. It has been a successful 'group' activity for several of my friends.
I'll send ya a message Alee on where to send the pieces.

Do you want them cut from the front or back of the leg or can we incorporate a pocket or two? I think I have some with stitching on the pockets and possible a leg or two. I knew there was a reason that I saved all those jeans!

Hey, Alee, I'd be glad to do this for you...are you just interested in denim, or could corduroy help you, too?
I was thinking, it might be nice if we could all just quick embroider our initials or something quick on at least one square so that she has some tangible connection to the folks that are thinking of her?
I know it's timely, but since we are all such "stitiching queens" I think it could be done quickly. I'll have mine out by Friday to you, Alee.

To keep it simple for me Jonni- lets just do denim this time around.
And you can include pockets if you would like and if I get more than 1 or 2 I will just pick the funnest to put on for them.
I have a jean quilt that was started for me by my grandma before she passed away and a friend of hers finished it for me. It is one of the most comfortable quilts I own. And it only gets better with age because it's cotton denim!! One of the cool things that she did was to put velcro on top inside of a pocket so I have a re-sealable hidden pocket on my quilt!

Alee, got your address, thanks. We are finally getting some snow today so I will have plenty of time to cut up some (about two pairs). It will have to wait til tomorrow to ship them though. They are closing the schools early (hey, its Maryland. I think they are allergic to the stuff!

Please cut the squares to 7 inches. I cut up a couple of pair of jeans this morning and started working on these. I had a few pairs from when I was super skinny (high school) and getting a 7 inch square was kindof hard! LOL Anyway, I have 6 squares all sewed up right now and I must say I am pretty proud. One seam I ripped out 4 times because it kept wanting to be off from the other seam. I think this is going to be great once it's finished!!

Alee! Hi! Sorry I've been gone for so long!
The project you're doing for Julia is absolutely wonderful! You have such a kind heart. :)
I wanted to make a suggestion (and I hope I'm not too late) but when I was going through my mom's cancer it was amazing to see the support roll in. The support that made the most impact (and still does 7 years later) is the encouragement and well wishes from strangers. Maybe the ladies (and gents) who send in denim can also write a note or a letter of encouragement and support to Julia and her daughter. It will not only give them something to read and look at in the hospital but it sure does inspire and provide a great amount of strength.
If you will email me I will try to get at least a couple squares out to you. Please let me know when you would like the squares by!
God Bless, Tess |
