Weather often is the cause of emergency evacuations, as was the case in my corner of the country when the Oroville dam was compromised and threatened to flood everything downstream of it. Today marks the one-year anniversary of that evacuation, and I am re-evaluating and updating my preparedness plans.

I keep a list of things to grab on the bulletin board; this is now out-of-date and needs to be edited. The bin of "I can't live without this" things has been picked apart in the past year and should be reassembled. My travel trailer, which has become an essential part of my evacuation stay (should I ever need to do that again) will be pulled out, checked over, tire pressures checked, food inventory refreshed, etc. And I will re-dedicate myself to keeping the truck fuel at 1/2 to full every day.

Do any of you have an evacuation plan? It's a hard thing to imagine, when you don't have the disaster yet, but I know a lot of people try to be prepared for hard times. Can you share your plans and systems?

Grace, I hadn't thought about how the travel trailers could serve as kitchens in a power outage. That's a great point! Another reason to keep on top of all supplies in them--especially the fuel--year round.

I am out of serious earthquake country but I realize that food supplies could be interrupted if the state had to focus on a major disaster in the Bay area. After the dam incident I have changed some of my storage areas to the upstairs. That way at least I'd have some usable supplies in the case of a flood. I wish I had a little aluminum boat...

Ever since Y2K (remember THAT?! How funny!) I have enjoyed preparing for power outages and cut-off supplies. I've never yet needed them really, our power source remains very constant. But being on a well and having livestock to keep watered makes me nervous about how to maintain a water supply in an emergency. I've thought about some kind of hand pump that would drop down into the well but you'd have to break open the casing to do that. This year I plan to add a really good generator that could handle the house pump. My last resort go-to is the river, about a mile away over tall rock piles. Not too efficient!

Sara, up here in Spokane WA., Winter can bring on all kinds of mayhem like Ice Storms and downed lines leaving homes with out power for dAys even weeks... we have the propane tanks on both camp trailers filled and both trailers are housed in the barn.. so we can use the propane stove in the trailers. (as well as the porta potty)
We also have a portable gas run generator and a filled 5-gal container of gas.. not to mention a propane BBQ..
I keep on hand in the Emg. Prep container, things like chili, minute rice, inst. potatoes, soup, powdered milk, gallon jugs of water, etc. to get us through a week if we lose power. Maybe not the most healthy, buy will be easy to prepare ...

Back when we lived in Calif., we have a Earth Quake Bug-Out pack in each vehicle..
I doesn't hurt to be prepared...
