All you ladies who love to sit on the porch, the virtual porch that is, come join the fun! We sometimes have tea together here or coffee, whichever you prefer. Just good to get together on the porch and chat with girlfriends!

We have had some die in the past from pneumonia. In fact, enough so that we give the vaccine. Our weather goes from one extreme to the other and we have crazy winds which just makes things "ripe" for pneumonia. We raise primarily Nubians, but we also just started raising Boer goats as well.

So true Grace! And whenever we have to stay in hotels I miss a cat on the bed. Hotels should have complimentary loaner cats.

Shannon, so glad you found an answer to what happened and why they died. And a good thing to know what to treat them with to save them,
Pneumonia is a silent killer of goats too. We have had that happen when we didn't catch it fast enough. We have woods on one side and neighbors on the other. But all of our herd is on the side with the woods. One neighbor sprays the fence line although we haven't seen them do so. What breed of goat do you have? You amaze me making all the various kinds of cheese!

You are right about that, Grace! We don't have cats but have had one in the past. We have four LGD's that watch our herd. Plus chickens and rabbits. Currently do not have pigs or turkeys. All them make for good farm entertainment watching them.

Great pictures Heather! Two of my girls went and adopted a kitten from the SPCA. They are so much fun! My hubby says we are getting over run by them, hahaha. It means one outside cat, 3 inside cats (including those two kittens), and two inside-outside cats. Not nearly the number you have!!!

How wonderful to have so many heifers! We are talking about getting a couple cows in the near future. A friend is decreasing his herd. They are Dexters.

So glad you were able to figure it out and save the rest!!!!

We've had a lot of heifer calves this year. So far we've had 14 heifers and only 3 bulls!!! The kittens are growing like weeds:

Here's a different batch:

Hope everyone is staying cool and enjoying summer :)

We figured out that the goats got into weeds the neighbor had recently sprayed. We gave the other ones activated charcoal and were able to save them. THe rest are doing great now! We make EVERYTHING from our goat milk - cheddar, feta, mozzarella, chevre, ice cream, yougurt, etc

It is hard to lose our goats. We lost one of our very first ones May 1st, a Nubian named Maybel who was 12 years old. We do have a daughter out of her named Moon who is a cross between a Nubian and LaMancha. She is the farm pet and solid black. We have a dairy herd of Nubians and Lamanchas. The LaManchas came about when a granddaughter wanted them. We did not breed for spring kids this year and now aiming for fall kids. They do keep us busy. When I have milk, I make yogurt and chevre plus having milk to drink.

We had the same happen to two of ours also. My son's French Alpine and my youngest daughter's Nubian 4-H projects (and family pets). Went out one day in December and found both of them laying the pasture. It hadn't been that cold and they weren't attacked by dogs so we never knew what happened to them. Heartbreaking.

Oh dear, I know how you feel Shannon. We had one Nubian, Vannah White, along with our two Boers. DH went out to feed them all one day last month and she was just laying there "gone". She had not been ill or shown any symptoms of anything being wrong. She was only four years old. Will one of the other mothers adopt the orphan or do you have to bottle feed him?
I want to sew today. However, I badly need to prune my front porch geraniums. So I guess I'd better hop to it.

The rain has definitely been hitting here!!! We are loving the moisture, though we are extremely flooded!

This morning is hard... we lost one of our most favorite dairy goats :'( We have no idea what happened! Her baby boy is walking around calling for her! The sound is heart wrenching!!!

How ae you feeling, Shannon?
A dozen baby goats . . . how marvelous. We have two adult Boers (Ms. Piggy and her son, Norman) and love them. If I were not too handicapped to take care of them myself, we would have more. DH is not quite as into the animals as I was in my hey day. But I keep telling him that we need to get at least one more as when Ms. Piggy passes on, Norman will be lost without a companion.
The lemonade sounds delish. I have two quarts of lemon juice in the freezer waiting to be lemonade when warmer weather arrives. I just finished making a gallon of Limoncello which only uses the yellow skins.
Has any of our rain made it over your way? We have had almost 15" so far this year. I've been craving sunshine but am very thankful for the water after the last couple of years of drought and wildfires in the west.
It's been nice sitting and chatting with you . . . let's do it more often. But for now, I'm off to sew something. Not sure what but I'll get inspired when I get there. I really should do another class today . . . . maybe . . . . maybe not . . .
hugs,
jean

Baby goats?? Awwww. I bet they are so cute!! Goats make me laugh…their antics are just too cute!! I’ll have a glass of lemonade and a biscuit with jam please! :)

Oh how I have missed the porch... but no one seems to be here! But just in case, I've brought some strawberry lemonade that one of the kiddos canned the other day (well she canned the concentrate anyways), and some biscuits and strawberry-rhubarb jam, as that is what is going on in my house! The kids are busy with their 4H projects. Sewing conference is this week, as is County Shoot. My garden is slowly getting oplanted - I am so thankful my children are up for helping with that! We have a dozen baby goats running around, as well as chicks and ducklings. No matter what life throws at us, the normal continues on :)

Heather, so sorry that you've lost your buddy and one of the kittens.
Seems odd that they'd both be gone. Maybe they got locked in a neighbors barn or shed. Kittens do like to follow bigger cats.
I'm an optimist.
Judith, that's exactly what my husband said when he saw their pic.lol
Loving the pics. Hope to see the new kitties soon =)

So glad you and Patsy get to visit more often! I bet you're both enjoying that.

Yes, they're friendly now:

Especially this one! This little booger will lay down right where you're walking and want a belly rub then attack your fingers LOL! He purrs like crazy as he's doing it. The other 2 aren't quite as friendly but you can pet them and they come running when you talk to them. We lost one of them and my favorite cat a little bit ago. Not sure what happened. They were there for the evening chores and missing in the morning. I really miss my favorite cat. I called her baby. She was born late last year and didn't have any siblings or other kittens to play with. She adopted me :) She would be waiting at the back door every milking. Anytime I was outside she was right there with me. When I would feed the heifers their grain she would sit on the tractor tire waiting for me to get done so they wouldn't try and lick her. She was a great cat!

There are 4 more kittens that are starting to open their eyes and move around a lot now. I'll be working on them next :) Their mama is super friendly but very ornery! We have 2 cows due any day now.

Hi girlies, It is very quiet here. Good to see some chatter going on.
Lovin' the baby pics and watching those kitties grow. So sweet.
Can you handle them much? I know you said you'd try to.
Hubby and I have been going to Patsys weekly since she was finally able to move into her house. There are still a few things to be done, but it's livable now at least. I've been doing lots of weeding since they keep growing no matter how much...or maybe because of all the rain we're having. It's been a wet spring.

I think it is warm enough to sit on our deck today but I am playing in the sewing room. May need to go enjoy the sunshine and do the playing later when the rain comes. I just haven't been in here in a while and I love when I can spend the time here too!
