I have grown herbs and roses in containers for years. This morning I was reminded of one of the reasons I like it. Last week my new yellow rose "Ron's Choice" was in the sun. Today I noticed that by 9 a.m. the morning sun had shifted and the house cast a shadow over it. I moved it further down the deck rail next to the parsley. Along with being able to move containers around when they need more sun or shade I can water/fertilize each container as needed.

I'm waiting for delivery of plastic pots to transplant orchids that have outgrown their current containers. I had to order 20 to get a good price and only need about 10 so the leftovers will be put to use with tomatoes and maybe smoother veggies. We have out small garden beteen the house and fence; it's a tiny area but we have Sunsweet tomatoes, eggplant, beans, beets, chard, sunflowers, squash, oregano, thyme, parsley, and okra. It's amazing what you can do with just a little bit of space.
This area gets morning and afternoon sun but is shaded in the middle of the day.

I am growing blueberries in wine barrels, strawberries in a five tier vertical tower, kale, chard, spinach, lettuce, peppers, bush beans, bush peas and bush tomatoes, beets, carrots, turnip, eggplants, summer squash, and herbs in 7 gallon grow bags (all successful), roses are in ground along with winter squash, baby melons (both using veritical supports) and tomatoes (using vertical supports) and butterfly garden. I also have orchids in terra cotta pots. This is the first year trying 18 gallon tote bins (with a lot of holes drilled in the bottom) for my potatoes, onions, and garlic. It to soon to tell if the tote bins will be successful, but all other methods have been working for me in growing zone 10b (southern California Coast area). I don't think that my rhubarb and asparagus are too happy in 10 gallon grow bags, after four years they look like they are struggling.

I do both. I like containers for the reason you mention, and also have lettuce, herbs and flowers right by the kitchen in addition to the garden. Containers are great - just remember to disinfect them between seasons.

I have never grown sweet potatoes but I sure do eat a lot of them. I have one that is starting to sprout so I think I'll plant it and see what happens. I hope it is more successful than potatoes; every time I've grown potatoes I harvest little walnut-sized ones. At least they are good in stew.

Dianna I don't know why it wouldn't work for sweet potatoes too. The only difference I can see is sweet potatoes have long vines. A tomato cage; some other trellis should work for the vines; or let them run on the ground if there's room. If you try it let us know how it turns out.

Has anyone ever grown container sweet potatoes? I've seen potatoes grown this way with great success but never any sweet potatoes?

Dianna, I have small back & front yards so there's no place for another tree. I won't replant because I'm into the every other day of watering and soon it'll be everyday. This time of year it's easy for me to resist adding plants.

I don't have a caterpillar story but I did pull out 7 wee pecan trees growing in my container of pansies. Surprised the pansies lasted till now. I'll clean up the container and have it ready for next year's crop of pansies.

Bwahahaha!!!Lisa that's so funny!!! How true was that? Guess I was getting my parsley in a different venue! The DJ said since I'm a vegetarian I needed the protien!!
Shannon, true that! I'm just putting more parsley and moving on! I hate that I may have hurt the monarch population by a small amount! Giggle.....

LOL Dianne! I remember as a little girl we had a wild pear tree. I was out with my grandpa, and picked one, bit into it and saw a worm. He said "nothing wrong with that, they've just been eating pear" LOL. Maybe he had a point.

Probably best to not think about those caterpillars too much! Or to repeat to yourself: Things swallowed whole don’t count” ! Maybe research will find that they are real immunity builders!!!

Lol, yes, Sharon, garden on!! Welcome and hood to have you here!

I just planted more Nasturtiums and a new pot of parsley. I had been grabbing a hand full everyday I was working outside and today I was about to grab another handful to pop in my mouth and saw the hugest monarch Caterpillar on the parsley and as I began to do a more in depth study I found smaller ones eating on the parsley!! I wonder how many of them I may have popped in my mouth??? Ick...

I love reading all of the posts about everyone's various experiences with gardening! It truly is an adventure isn't it?! Failures, Successes, Surprises! We continue to "grow & bloom" just like the flowers & herbs & veggie seeds we plant. Let's garden on gals, garden on!!!

Dianna -- watch out where you put that pot of roses. I had a 5 gallon pot that my sister gave me with giant lilies in it. By the time I decided where to put it, so many roots had grown through the bottom of the pot that it couldn't be moved. I now have a giant patch of lilies outside the bedroom window where I really wanted primroses.

I have a huge 1/2 acre garden but I love all my containers around my greenhouse! Every year I plant various herbs, edible flowers and some perennials that I then transplant for the next year. I have one huge pot that has a rose in it I havent decided where to put it!!:D

Sara -- we are currently digging up the pecan and oak trees the squirrels "planted" last fall but I am very thankful for the squirrels because before they arrived I had to pick up all the pecans and my back can't take that anymore.

Dawn we don't have chipmunks but do have squirrels. They have been busy and I've been pulling up wee oak & pecan trees in the yard and raised beds. Hope the chipmunks leave your tomatoes alone.

Judith I've had potatoes growing in the compost but never an avocado tree - I think you take the price.

I've planted my geraniums and succulents in containers so I can move them under shelter if there is a freeze. We had an avocado seed in the compost pile grow into a nice sized little tree about 12 feet tall. Winter frosts would kill the top and it would come back but one year we had a really hard freeze -- the water pipe breaking kind, and the tree died.

Living in a townhouse means container herb/veggie gardening for me. I also have to move containers around during the day since I only get partial sun during the day in the front and back. I am trying tomatoes again this year and hope to finally thwart the chipmunks from stealing them. Have fun gardening!
