Posted - May 14 2020 : 1:38:48 PM This is our first gardening year here in Tennessee. Our property is on a slope so we had to plan for lots of water runoff. We decided on a cement block raised bed - since we have about 1" of soil that is on top of rock. There is no digging here. We lined the block with plastic then did a sort of hugelkulture in the beds. Sticks, leaves, mulch, then garden soil delivered from the local gardening center. Everything under the soil starts to compost and break down.
We had a couple of nights last week with frost so we hooped and covered with plastic. We just finished up the hooping so it's more stable and we can *hopefully* have something growing year round.
We plan on adding more raised beds in the middle. Maybe in the fall.

Posted - Jun 13 2020 : 11:12:25 AM I picked chard tonight for dinner. Imagine my surprise when the biggest spider I’ve seen in my life fame running out with her eggs when I was washing the stalks. #128561; I had to yell for hubby. I was not brave. #128542;

Posted - Jun 06 2020 : 3:12:10 PM Hubby & I added a soaker hose to the garden today. I think I turned the water on too high because it flooded the middle part of the garden (where nothing is planted) and it's all soggy now. Lesson learned.

Posted - Jun 03 2020 : 07:02:07 AM Deb, I'm still learning about when to plant; water needs; how much sun/shade; and whether to fertilize or not. A new plant means looking it up to see what it needs. I should keep records but I don't always do it.

Posted - Jun 03 2020 : 06:52:46 AM definitely learning here. I pulled out all the turnips I put in by seed. They didn't produce anything but a spindly root. Guess it was too warm for them. I put okra in their place. So far my chard & broccoli is doing well. I just hope the 90 degree weather thats coming doesn't kill them.
I planted some cauliflower by seed and now I see they like cool weather as well. (sigh) I'm learning. I need to pay more attention to what likes what weather. Those plants may go as well and I'll replace with a hot weather loving plant.

Posted - May 17 2020 : 08:20:53 AM We have a lot of deer here so we had to have something high enough to keep them out.
I just hung a few pie tins from the hoops to keep whatever is snacking on the flowers of my patty pan squash away.
I'm so happy that my potatoes have sprouted. My first time trying with potatoes from the grocery that sprouted before I could use them up.
It's coming along.

Posted - May 15 2020 : 12:52:28 PM Nice garden, Deb! We have been throwing out ideas on how we want our garden when we build it and it’s similar to yours. We want to make sure to have a fence as well to help keep the animals out of it. Good luck with your garden. I hope it’s very successful.
