Hi girls -

Okay... Let me preface with: UCK. HOT DOGS.

I lived on them when I was in college and swore I would never eat another again in my life. Unfortunately, my hubby and son see things a little differently. I HAVE broken down and had a hot dog at the occasional Pirates game, but unless they are SMOTHERED with onion, ketchup, mustard and relish - and I mean SMOTHERED to the point that you wear the condiments all over your tee shirt every time you take a bite - I can't do it. I just... I just... I just CAN'T.

But today I was online and saw a recipe for something called "pickled weiners?"

(Oh my gosh... I'm in stitches! Who COMES UP with this stuff?! Comedic GOLD!)

Has anyone ever tried this? What does it taste like? Is it any good? It kinda sounds gross.... But... I like pickles... I can DO pickles... I LOVE pickles... So maybe this summer I can find a happy medium with my guys? I doubt it. But I'm willing to try... a bite... maybe...

Maybe?

Please let me know if you've ever tried this, or make this regularly, and if you have a good recipe, please share!

(Still giggling like a little kid... Ooooooh my gosh! Gracie - are you giggling, too? You ARE, aren't you!!!)

Hugs -

Nini

Lisa, I printed the recipe out. Lil Smokies sounds like the way to go. I may try the VS just for the fun of it.

Eww Sara, that is not what they are like. More like a lil smoky pickled.
Here is a copycat recipe I found.
I might try to make and have my sis come over for a Pepsi (when we're allowed LOL)

PS, I do like Vienna sausage too, although I haven't had them since I was about 13 when my mom would pick me up from school to take me to figure skating. Might have to buy a can

Denise I keep Vienna sausages in my pantry. I like a taste of them now & then. I eat the tips off both ends and Annie gets the middle. One of our favorite snacks while sitting outside. I wonder what pickled Vienna sausages would taste like. May give it a try when I finish the jar of B&B pickles. Don't won't to spend much $ - time - or energy doing it. Just open a can of VS; drain; and dump in pickle juice.

Well, that's a new one on me. I remember when my second born was a baby she loved those little Vienna sausages they had for babies. I thought they smelled terrible but she loved them. I was a little surprised they had those in baby food. I'm sure she would turn her nose up at them now. LOL! I wonder if the pickled hot dogs are anything like those?

OMG, Judith... I just threw up in my mouth a little bit! Lol! Even my husband -who will eat ANYTHING but cole slaw - said, "Eeeeeewww!" Lololol... You cracked me up! Thanks - I needed that today! Lol!

And I was thinking exactly the same thing, Heather... Who comes up with this stuff? BUT some people love them. I will try almost anything just once. If Lisa says she likes them, I trust her. (But Lis, please don't tell me they're good covered in chocolate! I... Just... Couldn't! Lololol...)

Omg, Heather! I feel the same way about those oatmeal thingies! My Grandma would buy them for us in tough times. She loved them! So gross! I much preferred her homemade goodies! Thankfully she baked for us all the time... She considered the Little Debbie things to be a real "treat."
My husband, however, could down them by the box. (Total sugar fiend.)

Lisa...now I've got a hankering for an ice cold Pepsi! Haven't had pop in ages!!!

Sara - I actually COULD imagine that sitting on the bar! I wonder if they would be good hangover medicine, then? Lol!

Hugs,

Nini

Sara, I just looked at some of those online and they look horrid. The Penrose were not like that, the brine was clear/yellow (from spices I assume).
Makes me want to go find a jar, but it looks like they don't sell them by the jar anymore.

I'm with you Nini - not sure I'd want to try them. I want to know who came up with the idea? I mean how would it even happen for someone to think "lets pickle some weaners"?!?

I know how you feel about hot dogs. I have a similar reaction to Little Debbie Oatmeal cream pies. Just the thought of eating one makes me want to gag. It's not because they taste bad though. When my sister and I were young my grandma would pick us up after school on Tuesdays for gymnastics lessons. She would have a box of the oatmeal cream pies. We would eat the entire box on the way to gymnastics- just the 2 of us!!! Grandma said she thought we liked them since we kept eating them. Neither of us can stand them now.

Never made them, only the Penrose brand, and haven't had for years. My sis and I were talking about them recently and both remember fondly. With saltines and our weekly Pepsi with ice.

I checked out the two stores I order my groceries from - only one had pickled sausage. $7.95 for little over a pint jar - they're proud of their pickled sausage. The sausages were larger than cocktail size and that horrid red dye color. Not what I remember. I do recall seeing large jars of pickled sausages & eggs on some bar counters. Maybe they go better with a dark beer or ale.

(Lol...Dawn...I'm with you...But trying to keep an open mind... If the girls say they're good, I have to believe 'em. They've never steered us wrong yet!!!)

Thanks, Lisa... Have you made them? Im thinking of trying to. I have some cocktail weenies in the fridge (my son loves pigs in a blanket), and I thought maybe I'd try making them... Just to see... I trust you, girlfriend!

I'm sorry but it sounds revolting to me! I am curious though to hear how they taste by someone here who is brave enough to try them.

Yes and they are delish. The pickled sausages that is. We used to have them as a kid; the brand was Penrose.

They were spicy I remember, and when they were gone we would put hard boiled eggs in the jar to soak up the brine. So good!

Honest to Pete, Sara... I have never even heard of pickled cocktail sausages before! I'm sorry! I must be living under a rock! Lol. Have you tried them? How are they served? What are they like? Now I KNOW I need to get out more! Lol!

You can buy pickled cocktail sausages so why not pickled wienies. Nini if you try it let us know what you think. Might be good with aged cheddar cheese.
