Hello My Farmgirl Sisters~
We found out about 8 weeks ago that our Son Kent who is 43, has a rare disease that can only be treated to slow the progression of the disease but can not cure it. We find that we need to move below 3000 for him to have a quality of life. Kent misses the ocean and wants to move to the Pacific Northwest, which is fine with us. I do miss the ocean but I will miss Colorado and the Mountains. We have lived in Colorado for 23 years and all of it will miss our adopted state.
So, we have narrowed it down to two states, Oregon or Washington. I was wondering if my Farmgirl Sisters who live in Washington and Oregon will tell us what you love about your state and what you don’t like about your state. We thought it would
make our decision easier. Kent and I are leaning towards Oregon, we lived there for 3 months in 2007 and I lived there as a very young child. Tom just does not know which state he wants to live in. We need to be within an hour or two from a VA Hospital and good medical facilities with good Cardiologists and Pulmonary Doctors. We do know that Portland Oregon has both. So southern Washington and Oregon are/can be good choices, Oh, I forgot to say we want to live right on the ocean or bay,
So, can you help us with some information on your beautiful states.
I do know there are Farmgirls in Washington and Oregon which I hope I will be able to meet no matter what state we decide on,
Thank you son much.

Big Hugs,
Debbie

No suggestions but wishing you lots of luck. I know how difficult it is to try to rent with animals.

Woo, Hoo, we have finally made our decision, we will move to Oregon. So happy as that is where I wanted to move. Not sure which city yet but we know Northern Oregon and as close to the ocean as we can get. We will rent a furnished home for a few months, maybe 6 months, and a Kent is going on ahead maybe January.
Big problem though for us is we have 5 dogs! Not many folks will rent a home to us because of that, and two are German Shepard Mix, So we will see what happens. We are up to renting a house in lower Washington too, so we are starting to look.
Anyone who has any suggestions let us know please.
Thank you.

Debbie

Thank y’all so much.
I will tell you we are leaning towards a Oregon. So we will see.
Our Son is going to visit family in Illinois for a couple of months to get him to a lower altitude for awhile so he will feel better. He had a Pulmonary Blood test last week and the results were not good sadly. He simply is not getting enough oxygen.
Now we will look for houses to rent with option to buy so he can get there sooner than later.

Deb,
So sorry to hear about this. Bless his heart. Just doesn't seem fair. I can't tell you where I would move, I have never been to either state. But I wish you and your family the best in this decision.

Debbie, I will keep your son and husband in my thoughts. Washington and Oregon are both beautiful. One thing to consider is the states that have no sales tax usually have state income taxes about equivalent to what you pay the feds. One of my friends moved to the Oregon coast (Brookings) and the fog was so bad they moved to the California desert a year later. My niece lives in Portland and gives it excellent reviews. I love the area around Bend but it is higher in elevation and a long way to the ocean, but I am more a mountain and desert girl.

Thank you for the information Rachel. I can not believe all the Farmgirls that live in Oregon and Washington. I have met almost 20 Farmgirls in my many years with MJF, and now I will be able to meet more. Oh the fun I will have!

Debbie, I'm so sorry to hear about your son. I live in Western Washington, in the Puget Sound area, and I literally could not imagine living anywhere else. I've lived here for five years (I'm from Indiana) and the beauty here is actually healing for my soul. We live west of Seattle on the Kitsap Peninsula, and it's slower and calmer here then over on the Seattle side of the water.

If you have any questions about my part of the state, please feel free to email me. I'm happy to provide info.

Thank you so much April for your information as well, I really do appreciate it.
At this point we do not know what start. But, you certainly are right about the prices of houses close to the water, well above our pay grade.
Housing seems to be less expensive in Coos Bay with many houses for sale. But, the crime rate is unbelievable! I have read reviews from folks from Colorado who moved there. They stated that it is Beautiful but to keep your windows close at all times otherwise you will be broke into. A lot of Meth and folks are looking for goods to sale to buy Meth. We have read this as well. Does anyone know this to be true or false?
We thank you again everyone all this information really helps us.

Hi Debbie,

I grew up in the Beaverton / Hillsboro area just outside of Portland. Portland does have good health care, we have a friend who travels there often to the VA hospital as he's had two significant surgeries this last year. He's also seen doctors here in the Bend area (Central Oregon) The Portland metro area is beautiful and is only an hour and a half from the nearest coastline (seaside, cannon beach, Manzanita area.) The Willamette river runs through Portland and the Columbia river runs between the Oregon and Washington border. However, its my understanding real estate is pricey on the water. It rains in Portland, often, as well as the Seattle area. But, both are beautiful metro areas and that is also why they are so green! Portland is about 500 feet above sea level. You may want to google real estate in the Forest Grove, North Plains, Hillsboro area, while all real estate seems to be expensive these days, the outer bank of the metro areas may be a bit more affordable. Vancouver, WA is very convenient as well, however, I'm not familiar with real estate values there. Central Oregon is high desert where I live, however, we are 3 hours from Portland and about 3000-3500 feet up. We are a drier climate, with four seasons, but can get a generous amount of snow each winter. BEAUTIFUL! Bend Oregon area is an outdoor wonderland! Many people travel from all over to visit and experience our outdoor recreation activities and the beauty we have here. We have the Deschutes river, the cascade range, smith rocks, many lakes up our cascades vista hwy. I like to think of this area as heaven on earth, it's just so beautiful with our cascade mountain range and then the high desert views as well. There is also the Columbia gorge area, hood river, the dalles, etc... which are located on or near the Columbia river, about 2 hours from Portland. Beautiful as well. Just thought I would throw all that out there! Google the towns to view the area and read about them! Oregon is beautiful and more than just the wagon wheels many envision when they think of the northwest!! LOL!! Prayers to you and your family!

Thank you all for your prayers and information, it is much appreciated believe me,
It is my DH who needs the VA facilities as he is a disable Vet and will need them for life.
Our DD is not military or a Vet and he needs Civilian Medical Care for the rest of his life.
DS has Primary Pulmonary Hypertension and has had it for years Doctors say, only found 8 weeks ago after being sick since January. There as of now no cure, but the research continues as they hope for a cure. They can only treat it to stop the progression of the disease.
This will be a long term move and probably our last as we are getting to old, at 64 this has to be our last move!
Again thank you all.

Big Hugs,
Debbie

Dear Debbie I am so sorry to hear about your son.God bless you and your family. The VA Hospital in Roseburg Oregon is very accommodating. The Va Hospital in Seattle is world class. Do your research about travel reimbursement and the other needs to meet your son's care. I'm going to be voting for the Washington area because of better Drs. And all the variety of housing choices. Your in my prayers and thoughts. Be strong and be the nomad your son needs now. You can settle down another time. If I could ask what is the condition and the prognosis? Maybe the move is more long-term than I thought?

Debbie... I have yo chime in again... PeggyAnn is spot on, .. if you move yo Vancouver WA., there is no State tax and just a jop-skip& a jump is Poryland OR.,,and you can shop till you drop with no sales tax...
I gave a friend who moved there for that reason.

As for Spokane we have great Hospitals and Vet care... and lots of lakes, hiking trails ... then there is Green Bluff where we all go for fresh fruit picking and other events.
Some times I think we have to many things going on at any one time...
Have fun deciding ...

I have visited both Oregon and Washington states and both are beautiful. Good luck on narrowing down your choices because you have so much to choose from. I am sure you and your family will "feel" the right place when it shows up. Keep us posted as the process rolls along.

Hi Deb...Portland, OR OR VANCOUVER, WA MAKE THE MOST SENSE. As those are the Cities with the Best healthcare available. You could also do Seattle but it is even more costly to live there. But you would have the Mountains and The Ocean and good Hospitals and Doctors at your finger tips in any of those 3 Cities. If you want to live at the Beaches you won't be able to touch anything for under A Million and a Half...and usually more. ~ On the other hand if you moved to Eastern WA, particularly the Spokane area you will find great Hospitals there also. Spokane and Spokane Valley have very affordable housing.
You would also have Mt.'s, Snow in the Winter and lots and lots of Wonderful Lakes. And just 25 miles away is Couer de Lane, Idaho Where there is great
swimming at The City Center and lots of Recreational Things to do there. It is a tourist City and quite delightful. Mary Jane has a Farm Store there too.

Myself, I would do Oregon Coast/if it is affordable to you and just drive in to Portland for Dr.'s Etc. I'm just afraid you might get tired of that drive as
Kent's disease progresses.

You are in my Thoughts and Prayers! Keep me posted Friend!

Love and Hugs,
Peggy

Debbie, my heart goes out to you and your family...
Oregon indeed has some beautiful locations,,,,, that being said, so does Washington.
my suggestion is look at a map and write down the names of cities along the coast from Washington to. Oregon... then go to " city-data.com " and check them out for elevation, weather temps, population, medical/hospitals and jobs... etc.
then maybe do a google search of some of the towns that seem interesting,, and last but not least, do a housing search on one of the realty cites like Zillo or Trulia or realtor. Com
To get an idea of housing costs.
What I find enduring in a town based on my wants and needs won't be the same as yours.
If you don't mind and are patient you might want yo rent for the first year to make sure you are happy with your new location.

Any way ... that's my 2˘ worth.
Keep us up to date with your quest.

Hi Debbie,
If you are moving to another state for medical reasons you should check into their health plans unless that is not an issue. My sister lived in Seaside, Or. years ago. The beach was beautiful but always cold even in summer. Of course Washington would probably be colder.
