Woo hoo! Have you ever throw a surprise birthday party? How about one for someone like a spouse, at your house? Well, it isn’t easy!

SO DH turned 50! I wanted to have him feel really special, so dd and I cooked up a Surprise birthday! It was this weekend, and was a smashing success. He had NO idea (and I am shocked, lol.)

He’s from Denmark, so I made 1000 Danish meatballs. If I never see another, I am fine, lol!. I also made Danish cucumber salad, brown gravy, deviled eggs, and had a red and white birthday cake with 50 candles. One guest brought shrimp, another sausage rolls, another homemade bread, and I also made pumpkin bread as an alternative to cake. SMORGASBORD! I even found imported Danish beer for him.

I had guests park at the neighbor’s and we shuttled everyone over. It was a nice group of good friends. He thought we were going out to dinner (he hates going out on the weekends, as he works Saturdays and has a two hour commute each way). Somehow, I convinced him we were going out with friends and that was that. ;)

He walked in the door, and we all yelled “Surprise”! We wanted his parents here, but my father in law can’t fly due to health issues currently, so I had them make a video for him, which we played during the party. It was so cute - they waved Danish and American flags and sang Happy Birthday in Danish and in English.

I am happy it was just perfect for him. He deserved to feel special. I am still tired from the work, but it was soooo worth it. His face was priceless. He is still walking on air from such a happy weekend.

Have you ever thrown a surprise party? Good grief, it takes a lot of work and help from your guests! But OH SO FUN!

Nicole

IL was settled by quite a few Danes & Swedes in the late 1800's. Many moved on to WI, MN, and MI because they felt IL was a bit too warm in the summer for them. In a town just north of me they have a summer solstice festival every year for all the Nordic nationalities. I have noticed that most of the dancers, musicians, and food booths are Danish, then Swedish. I do make a few Danish & Swedish (another of my nationalities) dishes. I love lingonberries and wish we could get the fresh ones here. I enjoy baking but try to keep that under control to fit in my jeans!

Dawn, that is awesome! Do you cook Danish food? I have some favorites I make often. Also, I have heard that there is a big concentration of Danes in the Midwest. Do you know a lot of Danish decent folks? We have only met a few where we are.

Yes, I'm a little over half Danish. Three of my great-grandparents had immigrated here from Denmark. Enjoy your upcoming weekend. I hope you get to kick back & just relax.

Tillykke med fødselsdagen! What a wonderful birthday surprise for your husband's 50th! You definitely win spouse of the year award for it. I would have loved to try your Danish meatballs. So glad it all worked out for you both.
