Just curious. One of my favorite things to see is an old Hoosier. I finally found one (dirt cheap, insert Snoopy happy dance) that fit my kitchen recently. I just love it! It is missing the flour sifter, but that is okay, as I keep that door closed anyway. I was surprised that my brother had never heard of or seen one.

Any one else love them? Mine doesn’t really “fit” perfectly, as it is against a half wall and window, but it works and I love it.

Anyone else have one or love them? I think of my great grandma and her farm kitchen. She would have had one. I look at my little cabinet and wonder how many women before me had it and loved it.

Sara,

Thank you! I haven’t had my scale long. I actually got it in a local thrift store for less than $20. Usually I see them and they are so much more. I have always wanted one to do the same thing - help with my canning!

Nicole I checked out your latest Suburban Farmgirl Blog. Great pictures of your Hoosier cabinet and kitchen. Loved the article. Thanks for sharing with us.

The scale you have hanging is like the one I have out in my Yellow Rose Cottage. My oldest sister gave it to me in the mid 1970s. I use it to weigh veggies for canning. I calibrate it with 15.4oz can of veg or lb of butter. Not a perfect weight but close enough for my needs.

Sara, yes. I have two old ones I have had for years. One is in the kitchen and holds dishwasher detergent, the other in the laundry room for laundry detergent. I bought them over twenty five years ago, not realizing that they were Hoosier jars.

Nicole are you talking about the clear glass square canister jars with color metal lids?

If you can use them in your kitchen I would put them in the Hoosier cabinet. If not enjoy them where they are.

I have several sizes of the clear glass canister jars - some with lids - others without. I keep them in my pie safe and in open kitchen cabinet shelves for teas and herb sugars.

Hi Sara, isn’t it fun to “play”? I was just saying to my dh that I can’t stand the news. Maybe that’s why I am happiest in my little “vintage world”.

I didn’t realize that over twenty years ago, when I was at a flea market, I purchased (cheaply) two square biscuit/cookie jars, and that they are Hoosier jars. One holds dishwasher detergent, the other my laundry detergent. Trying to decide if I should leave them as they are being used, or incorporate to the Hoosier. What do you all think?

I'm glad to know someone else plays in her kitchen and lets her imagination take her back to an earlier time. Nicole it's good to hear you are enjoying your Hoosier cabinet.

I canned some pickles this weekend, and let them cool on the Hoosier. It looked like 1920 something. I felt like time warped backwards for a minute. So fun.

OMG Grace, that is how I feel! I linger too long at the table now...must get stuff done, lol!

I love all the stories and romance of the cabinets. Mine does not have the flour sifter but that is okay. It does have the shelf for your rolling pin and spices.

I still can’t believe I got one so beautiful for so little. Like it was meant to be! It sits where my little sideboard used to. I always changed it with the seasons. Not sure if I will do that now...

Nicole, and all you farmgirl sistas,,, how lovely to have a sweet vintage Hoosier.... wish I had one... but then if I did, I most likely would spend hours sitting at the kitchen table, cup of java nestled between my hands,, and wondering about the former owners of the Hoosier, who they were, how did they come to own the Hoosier and wondering how many pies, biscuits and cookies they made over the years accessing their flour, sugar from their Hoosiers... leaving pies to cool down on the shelf of the Hoosier,, maybe even used it to set and let 'pop' all those jars of preserves and pickles that they freshly canned.
Oh, I could day dream for hours...

Have loved Hoosier cabinets ever since I saw one in my Grandma's kitchen when I was 11. Always wanted one and almost got it when we remodeled the kitchen but finally realized it was more practical for us to do built-in cabinets. But I still love them from afar.

Karla,
Mine also has the flour sifter as well as the sugar holder/dispenser and roll up door. I used the steel lined drawer for bread. Keeps the critters out. I like the rolling door as it keeps things looking neat and clean.

I remember mom always hearing mom go on about wanting one, but it was not to be. I have had two, my first one did not have the flour sifter with it but it did have the metal liner drawer that I kept my potatoes in. Had to sell it when we moved. Then about 10 years ago I was at a second hand store and there in the corner was a ugly, dirty white Hoosier cabinet crying to me to take it home and give TLC. My husband and neighbors thought I had really lost it when I took it home. It has the flour sifter, and a roll top, it sits in my kitchen all pretty with crocks and such. Hugs Karla

I think they were a staple in most kitchens before all the matching cabinets were popular. I don't remember my grandmother having cabinets like we have today. She had a Hoosier and a table where she did a lot of her preparations for meals. The Hoosier was more like a portable pantry for her.
I remember they had one on the TV show The Waltons.

I have always been around Hoosier cabinets. Growing up poor in West Virginia almost every kitchen I was in had a hoosier---a staple of poor folks in the sixties I guess. I have my grandmothers hoosier in my cabin shack and my mothers Hoosier in my kitchen. I was lucky enough to find the side cabinets for one at a yard sale so now I have them by it. They're not refinished. I just painted them dark green and the one at my camp is red and white. Not fancy, but they sure bring me happiness. I don't like big fancy kitchens---love the cottage look.

I love that style of cabinet but didn't know they have a name. I would love one for my canning supplies.

I have one and love it! I keep all my baking supplies in it. It really makes me happy when I can use it as my baking center.

I have my Grandma's Hoosier cabinet. Weirdly, it is in my bathroom right now. It works great for storing towels and bathroom supplies. We are going to start remodeling our kitchen in September and I will be incorporating it into the design. It was painted that green color from the forties, so I will be stripping it to the original wood and bringing it back to it's former glory. A little bit of Lillian Mable will be cooking right along with me soon.

I have loved Hoosier cabinets since I saw the one in my Grandma's old farmhouse, 60+ years ago. All of my life I have thought about finding one and never did as it seems I never have had the room for one. Enjoy your Hoosier, and who cares if it isn't perfectly located in your kitchen. Like you say, just having it and knowing it has been in kitchens for many years is such a gift.

Sara, I love the history of the cabinet and how very special it is to still have the remnants of your Grandmother's old Hoosier! I would love to have my Grandma's and I hope someone up in Indiana purchased hers, when the Farm went to auction and have kept in in use and passed it down.

Sara, I love that! What a great historical story. I love that you have the pieces from your grandmother’s cabinet and how you’ve repurposed them.

Nicole enjoy your Hoosier cabinet.

I have one of the barrel shaped bottom drawers that came out of my grandmother's Hoosier cabinet. It had been left out in the weather so that's all I could save along with the cutting board. I use the drawer to keep decorative pillows in. I have it in my living room. The cutting board I have hanging in my kitchen with some of my vintage green handle utensils.

I have always loved the Hoosier cabinets. Women coming into Texas carried them in covered wagons filled with their household goods. It's hard to imagine setting up housekeeping in an unsettled land with just a Hoosier cabinet and a couple of wooden kegs and tin cans that held flour; salt; and sugar. I believe its important as women we don't let pioneer women's stories die.
