Someone (Kim?) had mentioned swinging from a tree swing and feeling surrounded by the spirits of nature. I grew up with a tree swing hanging from a majestic tree near our house. At the age of about 6, I have a specific memory of swinging early on a June morning after school was out and waiting for my Dad to come in from milking the cows... walking up the path from the barn. This memory is such a comfort to me... I wish my place here had an approprate tree for a swing.. I have to make due with a glider.. not quite the same.

My grandaughter lives across the street from a park with the old fashioned swings. We go over there and swing high,... such freedom! I love to swing. It's like you can sail away on the air to wherever you long to be!

Tree swings are a good thing!

Yep,,, Tire swig memories...
Our neighbor, whose daughter and I played together from the moment we got home from school until we got called in for supper,,, well her dad put up a tire swing, held by 3 ropes from a fruitless mulberry tree (I remember the tree 'cuz I would pick the leaves to feed to my silk worms)... Karen and I would take turns spinning each other in the tire... talk about dizzy! lol!,,
Alas,,, the tire is all but a memory and the poor tree is showing its age :>(
but the memories linger on...

My dad put up a tire swing in the big maple tree that was in our front yard. No grass ever grew there after he hung that, I think of the hours of play time we spent on that swing. When we bought this property the former owners had one in a big pine tree in the middle of our circle drive, I have never been on it, I keep it for memories of childhood, I love just looking at it when driving up the lane, it just has a warm welcome feel to it. My father made us a big two-seater swing out of pipe with maple seats. The seats were soon replaced with the soft ones after one of us got hit in the head and had to have stitches. I would swing so high the chain would go slack then I'd slide down with my back on the seat and my ankles wrapped around the chain. Gave my mother fits when she saw me. We have a big tree out back; maybe I'll ask DH to fix me up a swing. Nothing fancy, I'm too old for the acrobatics now. but it would be nice to sit and swing again. Wish my porch was big enough for a porch swing.

I had both kinds of swing growing up. We had a tree swing which was a tire swing and then a swing set with normal swings. I loved our tree swing until I got older. We would twist the rope and let it go so it would spin us on the tire swing. The older I got the sicker it would make me lol. So I then preferred the swing set. I do still love to swing and would love to own one for myself again.

When I lived on a Farm as a child we had two swings. One was a flat board swing and one was an old Tire. I loved both of them for
very different reasons. They were both hung in a huge old Oak Tree just out the back door. The Old Tire Swing was the one I hopped
on when the Banty Roosters were trying to peck my legs off. LOL And the flat swing was when they weren't out of the pinned
area and I felt safe to swing leisurely. LOL Now it reminds me of my Life as God's Child. The Old Tire Swing represents those times
that I need God's protection and security from the madness of life. The Flat Board Swing is when life goes Leisurely along and I can'
just enjoy the freedom of it all. God is there in both times pushing me to higher ground.

My kids had a tire swing on an old almond tree. We had a pair of geese. The goose died and the gander adopted the swing. He would stand next to it for hours. Kids got older, the rope on the swing got old and finally broke. One morning I got a call from our neighbor across the 10 acre pasture -- "Come and get your goose - he won't let me out of the house!" They had a tire swing in front of their house that our goose had discovered and adopted. We removed our goose and they removed the swing (her kids had gotten older, too. In fact, my son later married her daughter).

I have fond memories of floating on inner tubes in the river and swinging over the water on a rope and jumping in. It is so hot here today (108) that I would sure consider doing it again.

I never had a tree swing. My Dad was a welder. He made my brother and me a heavy pipe swing with 2 swings. I would use my hands to get to the top pipe and hang by my knees. Loved looking at my world upside down.

We didn't have a tree swing at our house but here we have a tire swing for our grandchildren. My granddaughter loves going out there and twisting it around and spinning on it. We used to go to my aunt's house to play and she had a swingset. Not the same at all.

I didn't have a tire swing, but we had a porch swing under a big beautiful ash tree. I spent many happy hours there swinging by myself. When my cousins came to visit from Ohio we had a ball in it---swinging high as we could go and we would always break it down and get in trouble. Then the parents would declare it was never going to be put back up because we wouldn't quit piling in and swinging too high. But ultimately---sooner or later it went back up and we were back in business---until the next break down.

My grandpa and grandma had a tree swing for us kids when we were little. I remember going out to swing every time I would visit. Even in the winter. There was something magical about that swing. My sister and I would take turns and sometimes even swing double on the swing. The sky would seem more beautiful and leaves on the tree would be a grand canopy of magic for two little girls with vivid imaginations. When my grandma passed away and grandpa moved in later years I would drive by the house just to see the swing. One day I drove by and the swing was gone. It seemed like a part of me faded away. I know that sounds strange but that silly swing was a huge link to the past and the fun times of being a little girl in a far away magical kingdom.

We used to take our innertubes to the bridge and get into the river about 2 or 3 miles upriver of the old swing and float down river to the swimming hole. Play for hours and then hike back to the bridge where we would get a ride home. I do not think that the river is safe for this pastime any more. Pollution and private property boardering the river. Haven't been back to the river in years. Just love the memory of it,

and down the road from the farm with the swing was the creek we used to swim in! We stopped in the '60s because there were so many houses being built on the old farmland the creek was becoming a bit polluted; we stopped when my brother dove in and came up with leeches on his arms!!!

Oh you guys make me laugh with the fun of it!!!!!!
There was a swing that someone had hung up in an old elm tree that hung way out over the little spokande river where there was a deep pool. We used to swing out over the water as far as we could and then jump or throw our bodies way out into the water and swim back to do it again. There was a rope tied onto the swing that was tied to the tree so we could retrieve the swing for the next jumper. Oh how I loved to swim in that river.

My grandparents had a farm about 15 miles from the city; my uncle farmed it for awhile, then it just became "the farm" which we all used for picnics, vacationing, etc. even though it was quite primitive. We had a tree swing where I spent many hours relaxing and dreaming; the swing went way out over the dirt driveway, since the tree was on a slight rise about the drive, so if you pumped your feet real hard, you could swing out over it; another fun thing to do (until I got older and couldn't stand the nausea!) was to "wind up the swing" and then let it unwind...the 50's equivalent of a midway ride. We also had a swing back home under an apple tree...now I'm planning to put in something tamer for my life now - a wooden porch swing on my son's swing set.

My Aunt Jessie and Uncle Benny had a place in the "mountains" where family tended to congregate for picnics and celebrations. Back in the woods, past the spring was a huge tree in which my father, uncles and very nimble cousins (the "big boys") hung a "Tarzan" rope swing. There was a small, narrow, wooden seat attached at the end of the swing. I can so vividly remember hanging on for dear life as my father's pushes sent me up into the leaf canopy. Streaching my legs as far as I could, I tried to touch the leaves and branches on the next closest tree. My mother would cringe as I would tip my head back and legs up on the return swing. And since it was the "Tarzan Swing", we all would try to out-do each other with our Tarzan yells as we swung to the sky. Oh, how I loved that swing!

I love tree swings! My grandmother had one for us when I was little. I could swing for hours under that shady tree.

Good topic Clare! I was the one that could feel the presence while swinging on our old swing in our old elm, late in the evening on cool fall nights. Sadly the old swing's rope has rotted off after 14 years and I am not as agile as I once was to climb the tree to put on a new rope. I'll have to ask one of my young nephews to attempt this so I can swing again.
