This is my second summer in this house. Last year I seen a hummingbird and quickly made some homemade nectar to put in a feeder. This year started out with two hummingbirds and today I noticed four. I love hummingbirds and can spend hours just watching them flitter around. Before I moved here, I had over twenty-five hummers. I am trying to build up to that number here. Does anyone else love feeding these little fast and carefree birds?

Barbara, what a wonderful and kind thing to do. Poor thing. I would have done the same thing. It is so precious to see the babies. Today one flew right up by me and stayed there for a little while. We just kinda stared at each other. It was an adult one. I now have 6 hummingbirds here. I have a feeling that next year it will double. It seems like more and more of them are coming around. I'm going to be sad to see them leave at the end of the season.

Lori---I too saw a baby hummingbird one chilly morning. It was so chilled it couldn't move, so I brought it in the house on the feeder to warm it up and put warm feed in the feeder. It stayed on the feeder upside down and went around and around as I twisted the bottom off and filled the feeder. When it got warmer outside I took it back outside and it set on the feeder a long time and was finally able to fly off. That is the only baby I have ever seen and it was a great experience.

Thank you for sharing that with me Vicki. It is such a darling little thing. It will sit on the feeder for the longest time. When I moved here I was so afraid that there wouldn't be any hummingbirds. I'm so glad I have them. They are getting used to me and I can get close to them now.

Lori it was a baby fledglings to new to be worried about anything. I had little gangs of them for a while but now its thinned down to a few. Love the show and how they chase each other!

Today I seen the smallest hummingbird I have ever seen. It was all green and so tiny I had to look twice to make sure I was really seeing it. I was able to walk up to within a foot of where it was perched on the feeder. What a beautiful hummingbird. So shiny and bright. They just seem to brighten my day every time I see one out my window or when one flies by me while I am sitting on the swing outside. By far they are my favorite bird.

Peggy Ann -- Thank you for the great description of diamond painting. Just when I think I've seen everything something new pops up. I love it; it keeps life interesting.

Judith...Diamond Painting (just google it) are tiny little round or square pieces of plastic (called drills). I prefer
5D Diamond Painting using round drills, I'm not a fan of square drills though I have done several of them. 5D is a term
that means the diamond drills have been cut 5 times on the top of the drill to give it a shiny diamond affect...just like
how the diamond in a Wedding ring is faceted. You can also get 3D diamond drills or just flat round tops. The bigger the
number of the cut the more sparkly your picture turns out. The bigger the size of the Diamond Painting (like this Humming-
bird one is a 40x50) the better your picture will turn out. I try not to get anything smaller than a 30x40). You use a small
diamond painting pen to place your drills onto the canvas. The canvas is sticky to adhere the drills. You only rmove a small
portion of the plastic at a time...so you don't dry out the glue they use. You just fold the small portion you are going
to work on back on itself...so when you get that part done you lay the plastic back over it and then stack books on top of
the section you completed. I do this at night so I can leave them under the books overnight. You can order your Pictures
on-line...there are so many to choose from and so many different companies to order from. Amazon carries them, I also use
Easy Whim, Shimmer, and so many many many more. I don't suggest buying them from crafting stores as they are the middle
man and so they charge more for them.

I hope you do try them too Barbara. It is much easier than embroidery or paint by number. Extremely Addicting too.

Love and Smiles,
Peggy

Yes Peggy Ann that is a beautiful painting. I like to do paint by numbers and have seen the diamond painting kits for sale. I think I will try one.

They will build up Lori because they always return to the same house to have babies. The little monsters are eating so much. It is noon here and they have already eaten a quart. Good for them that I love animals. Do you wash your feeders each time or just wipe them out? I have gone to wiping them out and only cleaning every three days. They are a task, but I will sure miss them when they leave the end of this month.

Barbara, I had over 20 hummingbirds at the other house but only have 5 that I have seen here. I guess it will build up. I sure hope so as I just love seeing them.

PeggyAnn, your painting is absolutely beautiful. I have never heard of diamond painting before. You did a wonderful job on it. Thank you so much for letting us all see it.

Very pretty! I haven't heard the term "diamond painting" before. It looks like needlepoint. What exactly is it?

Love that feeder Vanessa---never seen one. Happy to say my hummers have returned---seen about twenty or more this morning. Thy are eating more than two quarts a day. I always feel lonely when they leave---like that lonely feeling when good company leaves.

Dianna, the summer started out wet and hot. We haven't had much rain here lately. It cooled down to the 80's and the humidity went down but today the heat has been creeping up. When we moved here 2 years ago, we didn't have any hummingbirds that I could see. By the end of the first summer I seen 1. I put a feeder out and ended up with 2 by the time they had to migrate. I'm thankful to have 5 of them now. At the house we moved from we had over 23 coming out to eat at a time. I was constantly filling feeders and I loved it. I am hoping to get the little darlins built up to that amount here if I can.

Ohhh, Vanessa! Cool feeder!! I've finally figured out what my hummers favorite fenders are and now they get fresh food every other day. I'm back up to 12, thankfully.

April, I love sitting on our front porch to watch them!! They will occasionally come and check us out too! I stay real still and can even feel the wind from their wings!!!! Do you have the ruby throated kind or another species??

Vanessa, I love the hummingbird feeder. I have never seen one like it before. Glad the little hungry monsters are starting to use it. The feeder looks great with the planters of flowers around it. I bet they like the flowers, too.

April, I love it when they buzz right up to me also. They are so fearless for being such little things.

I have five of them now. At least I have seen five of them at the feeders at a time. They are so fun to watch.

I am happy to report that one smart hummingbird has discovered it. You can see him hovering above the feeder. The bees aren't able to get any syrup and so far neither are the ants. The tube is easy to clean and refill. It is a good feeder as long as you toss the cord and use wire or such to keep it stable.

I had a hummer buzz me on my front porch two days ago!! Came right up to my face, buzzed around me and flew away! Just love that they can be so trusting! Beautiful little creatures!

I saw a new type of hummingbird feeder at Rural King for $15, so I bought it. It hangs horizontally by cords, which is a design flaw. I changed mine to hang from wire, so that the tube can be adjusted to hang level and the syrup doesn't slosh out. They haven't discovered it yet.

I have never seen a preyingmantis eat a hummingbird but I can imagine that they would. A hummingbird is so small that a preyingmantis could eat it. That is so sad.

Vanessa, yes I saw a (sad) photo of a preyingmantis over its victim, a wee hummed :(
But as to whether it is true that praying mantis are aggressive toward hummers, I don't know for sure...

I luv pineapple sage for its bright red trumpet type flowers...
The plant, is a bushy type if Herb.
So it likes dry soil and lots of sun.
The one I head in SOCal, grew like crazy but the one I had in central Cal., in the mountains didn't grow as hardy. Not sure why.

I prefer the feeders with bee guards, although it doesn't deter them much. The Perky Pet types work well, plus I have bulbous ones that I think require too much syrup, so I only fill the 1/3 full.
My husband sent me an article about Praying Mantis that eat hummingbirds. Anybody run into this?

Barbara, wow. Five feeders twice a day!!! That's a lot. I don't know what happened to my hummingbirds. I had four of them and now I don't have any. I have no idea what happened. This was my first year to have any at our new house and I was so happy to see them. When it got real hot out they disappeared. Hope they come back.
