Colors like music and aromas can take you back to a place in time. This week I am bringing two of my color memories to life. After boards replaced and my deck water sealed it will be painted porch grey. I remember when most porches in the 1940s - 50s were painted grey.

Secondly my front porch ceiling will be painted porch ceiling blue. Another memory when porch ceilings especially farm houses were painted that certain shade of blue. I'm been wanting to do it since I moved to Paris eight years ago. The porch ceiling is not quite 7' so I put off doing it. Yesterday the handyman power washed my white frame house and it looks so fresh and new. The yellow shutters look newly painted so I decided it was time to paint the porch ceiling. He's picking up paint samples today for me to choose just that right shade of blue.

Thinking about colors of childhood I have to say that I have a favorite. I lived in my Grandmother's house from kindergarten until maybe 5th grade and had my own little room with seafoam green walls and hazey curtains of Daisy print and I love the memory!

Sara, that definitely makes sense. I don't blame him for trying to stay inside. 100 degree weather is uncomfortable. It will be nice to see it once it cools down!

Vicki, your cabin is beautiful. Sara, I remember the blue ceilings here in Minnesota and Iowa too. Take pictures.

Vicki, your colors are beautiful. Enjoy your cabin. So happy to hear your foot is now healed. That is truly a blessing.

I've been painting the wee cabin and porch. Light grey that looks kind of lavender at sunset on my porch! I love it. The little cabin is terracotta colored and has dark Forest Green trim. Its been in the warm eighties and i am sweating like a good worker just getting it done a bit everyday! Skipping on rain days. I'm very happy to be able to get done. I was layed up for a couple years with a bumb foot and am healed now.its such a blessing!

Krista, the handyman is working my projects in with others so not sure when he will get back to me. The deck is sealed and house power washed so it's slowly getting done. His other job is inside with A/C and with our 102 temps that feel like 116 I can wait until it cools down a little.

I have decided I want a grey-blue - the porch ceiling is 7' at the highest point and 6'1/2" at the lowest so I want a soft color.

I am using my wait time to pare down my stash of planters, flower pots, and my collection of "garden art".

Jennifer, you don't have to fret for me. No haints here - just peace and quiet. The Lord blesses my going out and coming in.

Sara, I'd be shocked if you didn't have "haints" of some kind or another - they like places that are very old and there have been people in France since one of the seven daughters of Mitochondrial Eve migrated to the Dordogne region with her tribe.

Interesting information. I'm not sure on the validity at least not around here. My family room is blue and we still have spiders in here.

Our porch floor is grey but we've never painted the ceiling it was white when we bought the house and had stayed that color. I think it is aluminum so it would be easy to have painted.

Sara, your house sounds delightful. I would love to see some pictures of it if you can post them. My mom always used to paint the porch grey. When I would ask her why she chose that color she would always say because it was expected to be grey. I found this topic to be very interesting and educational. I never knew that insects didn't like blue. Makes me want to paint every part of my house blue. LOL. I hate bugs.

Sara, you hit the nail on the head!, I find myself looking frequently these days at finding ways to bring back some sweet memories of days gone by. While my family never lived in a log cabin, my “log cabin” sure brings me happiness !! I love having that old bedroom a place that allows my imagination to find ways to find little accessories that make it feel authentic .

One of the binding elements of MJF is the love and preservation of important old ways . I from aprons, old cast iron skillets, fresh garden produce, and so much more, all of us here share the ways in which we honor our mothers and grandmothers and create memories for today!

Winnie, I think we all desire to bring a little of our memories into our daily lives. Also our dreams - like your "log cabin" room.

Judith, let us know if you do paint your porch ceiling blue and if it works to keep the birds away.

Barbara your light green porch ceiling must be beautiful and soothing.

I too love the blue porch ceilings and grey porch floors. A very old lady I worked for from when she was eighty to ninety seven had those colors and I learned to love them at her house. I now have a grey porch and I love it---doesn't show dirt like other colors and there is plenty of dirt in this holler---plus six dogs walking on it. But I am not a fan of blue.so I painted mine a beautiful light green. Very restful. I don't care about birds on the porch---our humming bird feeders are there and we have a big feeder for the winter birds right outside our patio door. But then I did keep a fawn in the house for six weeks. Animals can do no wrong in my eyes unless they are vicious and hurt people---then off with their heads I say.

Sara, I love that you are reclaiming your post WWII home's origins! What a wonderful story to share and it is a great idea too. I remember many a grey porch in the 1950s in my early years.

MIchele, I think a blue ceiling is very common for a porch down here in the South. I have seen many old houses , with wrap around porches, that have blue ceilings in my town in the older historic section.

No I agree Sara. I love color and having it around my house. The house we bought is all tan. All the carpet, walls, and doors are the same color. I have been longing to add some color. In our house before we had the prettiest blue kitchen and I miss it. It definitely makes everything feel better.

I don't have any problems with the haints or evil spirits but if it will keep the mud daubers and paper wasps away it's sure worth a try.

Thanks Krista. Being excited about painting it blue reminds me of when I painted my shutters yellow. I think color affects me more as I grow older or maybe it's just I have the time to think about it.

Linda I read the article and I found it informative as well as entertaining. Don't think I have any 'haints' here in Paris but just in case I do the blue porch ceiling and Annie should scare them off.

Here is an interesting article about blue porch ceilings. It mentions spiders and wasps and also evil spirits, but doesn't mention birds. I have been told it keeps birds away, but have to check into that further. LOL!
https://www.sherwin-williams.com/architects-specifiers-designers/inspiration/styles-and-techniques/sw-article-pro-thewhysbehind

It says the idea that it repels insects is a myth, however paint used to be milk paints which contain lye, and lye IS an insect repellent.
Hmmmm - and this is my comment - could we put lye into our porch ceiling paint?

Thought you might be interested in this article.

Thanks Peggy. Clouds would be fun - maybe in time I'll get around to that too.

Michele let us know if you do paint it blue. Never heard of a phoebe. Don't have them in my part of Texas. Will have to look it up.
