So,, have any of you sisters have a DNA test done .. ie: Ancestery.com, 23&me, etc...???

I Had a DNA test done via a company called CRIdny...
When I got the results, I nearly fainted..
They said I was 60% Finnish, 20% German and the remaining 15% was a mix of Italian,Welsh, English & a wee bit of Spain...
and then there is the "lower region that are less than 5% of misc.

So then I decided that either I was switched at birth or CRIdny had grossly error'd..
I made numerous calls & emails to them,, it was like playing Tag with a ghost!! but after 2 'conversations'.. they stood strong on their results!
Since I can not ask my mother due to her stroke,, I decided to have another DNA test.. so I went with Ancestery.com..
Their result was 60% German, 10% Italian, 6% Finnish and the remaining 24% consisted of English, Welsh, Spain & Portugese.

SO I called Ancestry, who were much easier to reach.. and told them both results and they stood their ground that they were correct..
I re-called CRI and told them about Ancestry and again they stood by their results!..
My Uncle (mom's brother) did the DNA with Ancestry.com and had a 80% German, 18% Italian and remaining 2% was English.

My sister said she wanted to do the DNA test, and recently sent in her 'spit' so now we are waiting for the results...
This will be interesting...

I realize that these tests are not regulated, tho' they claim they are 100% accurate,, each test can have varying results,, as they each do not use the 'same' method...I have been doing my homework on researching DNA tests... and turns out I am not alone in having varied results. But can you imagine the damage a DNA test could do if they got a result, like the result I got from the 1st company that said I was predominantly Finnish.. uugh!

So I am wondering, has anyone else done a DNA testing?
And what are your thoughts?

FYI: keep in mind,, in Europe,, West and East, land/borders changed over the Centuries as warring countries took/conqured-or lost land/borders.. Which is why it is not uncommon to have some 'blended' blood, ie: German/English.. Even the English Monarchy has some German blood lines, Queen Victoria married her 2nd cousin who was German... ahh, families.. what a mystery...lol!

My daughter just for her results from 23 & Me, and they were shocking. I'm going to use them to do my DNA and see if we line up. My husband's family is either completely unknowing of their heritage or my ancesters traveled a lot and didn't tell what they were up to.There are nationalities we weren't aware of and plenty of them. Some nationalities line up but 17% German was not expected at all. I am Irish, English, Hawaiian and Portuguese. That was there in my daughter's results but all the other stuff unknown to hubby is amazing.

hey Debbie,,,
I just read an article on the internet about 2 sisters who turned out to have different dad'a and a 'brother' from their dads 'meandering days' plus as it turned out the 2 sisters have the same mom bit different dads, as mom had a 'meandering moment'...
I t created a lot of hurt feelings and confusion to the family dynamics.. as the parents were no longer alive to talk to and sort out all the DNA info...

I totally get it, as kids we want to have the iconic "Ozzi & Harriet Nelsen" family...

Debbie, like you, I recently discovered I too was put into a "Home for Children" because my mom was unmarried and not able to provide for me... which explained why there were no baby photos of me except 3, which were taken at the "Home" of mom and me, and 1 of my 'Dad' and I. I was about 8 or 9 months old at the time the 3 photos were taken...
I am still digging and researching.. .I may not like what I find,, but, at least I will have a better understanding of myself.
It will clear up so many things for me.
No matter what the out come, I still love my parents and that fact will never change.

Debbie, someday, hopefully you will get to meet up with your last brother and it will turn out to be a good relationship.

Myself, my son and my hubby all did our DNA through Ancestry and are very happy with our results. We could only go so far on hubby as his dad was adopted as a newborn from an orphanage with no birth poinfo.
My birth Mother died when I was 4, I was placed in a wonderful loving Orphans Home. I was adopted when I was a teenager. I was raised in St. Louis Missouri. In 2007 I was told who my birth dad was, All I had was a name but never knowing if it was really him. So, long story short a year ago I was finally ready to do my DNA and find Me! Who was I, where do I come from. And do I have family out there?
What I found was this; I am 67% English, 30% Ireand and Scotlan, 2% Norway, and 1%
Cameroon, Congo and Southetn Bantu Peoples. Is that not so interesting? I am so excited to know where my ancestors came from. I also did confirm who my father was sadly he died 39 years ago. He seems to have been kind of wild as a young man as I have 1 half sister and four half brothers plus myself with 4 different women. Wow Dad! He did marry my 3 brothers omom and she is still alive. I am one of the people Who did not iget her happy ending finding her family. I have talked o my sister a couple of times and she really does not want or need a sister she has 3. 3 of the brothers want nothing to do with me and are finding it difficult to except their Dad got 4 different women pregnant. I get that and understand. They knew about my sister but not me or the other brother we have. The fourth brother I am hesitant to contact as he may not want to meet me either, the others have not contacted them.
So, I of course was heartbroken and sad that they did not want to meet me or their nephew. So, I decided to step back and leave them alone and try to understand how difficult this must be for them as well. I send my sister cards for special occasions to remind her I am still here should she ever need me and wants to meet me. And one day I will call my fourth brother to let him know he has another family out there waiting for him and wanting to meet him.
I had a lot of information on my momma but was able to find great grandparents and some cousins on Ancestry so I am excited,
So, I did get the information I wanted and needed from ancetry by doing my DNA, just did not totally get my happy ending.
But, Farmgirl Sisters I have a Sister and four brothers that live in Missouri, how exciting! And I know my heritage, and best of all I know for sure who my
Mom and Dad are!!!!!
Thank you for letting me share.

Debbie

Denise, I think we get DNA info from the 'X' chromesome in our fathers, which would be from our father's mother... but I could be wrong, it does get a bit confusing.

Rachel, thanx for the info about 'MyHeritage'...
I need to check into that.

I just wanted to share this all with you.

If you've done the Ancestry.com DNA test, you can download your raw DNA data report. I did that, and then uploaded it to the MyHeritage.com site because I read that MyHeritage was more accurate in the DNA regions than Ancestry. They analyzed the raw data and for $29 I got my report. The results are vastly different from what Ancestry has said. And what MyHeritage told me in my report lines up more with the family story/history that exists in our family.

Case in point - there is family lore that my great, great, great, great grandmother was a German Jew who left the old country and her Judaism behind when she moved to America and married a Roman Catholic. Growing up, my dad always told me that my very curly hair came from the Jewish side of our family, but that they've only been able to identify her, but not her family in Europe. Add to that the fact that my maiden name, although German, is primarily a Jewish German last name. Ancestry.com's analysis indicated very little Jewish blood, but MyHeritage.com analyzed my genetics with 4.2% Ashkenazi (European) Jewish heritage - very much in line with the family history. Having converted from Christianity to Judaism a few years ago (totally unrelated to any of what I'm sharing here), my rabbi has said that I have "restored" the lineage, which just makes me happy.

A question I have. If females don't have or show their father's DNA, how do some of us end up looking like our fathers? Maybe I missed that class in biology or something. LOL

Ancestry updated my dna and said I am English,German, Norwegian, Swedish and Cherokee. No scots or Irish. My mother would be shocked if she were alive. What I found to be most interesting was my mothers family has been in the us since the early 1700s. Trouble is all the questions about the people in our past will never get answered. Rats!

The genome testing we did kept everything anonymous. We were given the option if we wanted it that way.

Vanessa, good question... but I don't think Insurance companies can use it against you because these type of DNA testings are still questionable.

As for my sister and I, we are still scratching our heads trying to figure how I have Finnish & Russian in me and neither in her... lol!

Unlike most of you, I have no interest in taking a DNA test. Partly it is because I know who I am, and partly the privacy concerns. If my doctor requested it, I'd get the health screening (would our medical insurance cover it?).
On the funny side, my sister-in-law got her results back that said she's 4% Bantu. Now my brother-in-law teases her about that.

Don't we all love to tell about about our DNA journey. So exciting. If any of you want to do any serious researching I suggest gedmatch.com . Some of the tests are free. Other testsare $10.00 per month. But you only pay each month. So you can drop a month if you want. You can upload your raw DNA from almost any company that you tested with. I have 4 family members on my gedmatch. Try it out. It will amaze you.

Two of my grandchildren are adopted and so their mother had their dna tested. When both results showed a small percentage from Nigeria the 7-year old said, "See we really are brothers!"

My husband and I had our youngest son's DNA tested with National Geographic's genome kit. It started at the beginning of our history in west Africa. My husband's family went to the mid-east and no surprise he is mostly Persian. My side beelined it north to Denmark and Sweden on my mom's side. To my surprise my father's side, who came to this country 3 generations ago from Poland, showed us to be Greek! The family rumor was his family was originally from Greece rang true after all. What I didn't expect was to also be so Scandinavian from my dad's side as well as 3% southeast Asian. No clue where that came from!

Grace is correct about females not having the X chromosome to get a full clear picture of their father's side. Even so, it was fun to do and interesting to read over the course of time how our families moved about the world.

That is where you are lucky... I do not have a brother...
I only have 2 male cousins on my dad side and the one is my dad 's sister's child... the other male child (from my dad brother) is somewhere on the planet, unfortunately who knows where...

My brother had his done and we have English, Irish, Dutch and Native American from the Mohawks. We did not know there was so much Scottish nor did we know there was any Swedish. That was a surprise. They want me to have mine done as they say they can find out more of the mother's side from the women doing it. Still mulling over whether I will or not. Interesting mix for sure.

I had my DNA done in 2017 via Ancestry and the first result baffled me. After I received my results, like Grace, I figured I was switched at birth, which would explain a lot! lol My family is French Canadian and the results were as follows:

65% Great Britain
13% Italy/Greece
9% Iberian Peninsula
6% Irish - I can now legitimately celebrate St Patricks Day! lol
4% Europe West
3% Europe Jewish

WOW! no French in there!!!!

In 2018 they sent me a notice and the stats have changed. Somehow they found the French in my spit! lol

I think greater accuracy will come from an increase of testing. Perhaps, with time ... it will become more accurate. I would like to do a DNA testing that would trace my lineage back to the beginning of time.

Catch you all later!

I think this is so interesting; I may have to get it done, too.

Interesting story...the daughter of my mom's long-time friend took a DNA test just for fun with some other family members and found out that the person she thought was her father actually wasn't! Oops! But it all turned out well in the end. :)

So a fun update on this topic - Ancestry.com contacted me to let me know that they'd re-run my DNA based on the newest science - and it TOTALLY changed my DNA make-up! I was 30% Scandinavian, now I'm only 5%! I'm 74% British, 14% Irish, 5% Scandinavian, 5% German, and a smattering of other things. So who knows what the next update will bring, but I finally have a VERY solid excuse for my obsession with the Royal family!
