Hi Farmgirls,

As many of you know, I was raised in Houston Texas. My whole family is there, spread here and there. My dad is in Pearland, not far from Galveston. Their cars are flooded and three feet of water came into their garage. So far, the house has stayed dry (the garage is not attached). If he has to go upstairs, it will be difficult as his knees are in bad shape. My brother and his wife and mother in law are in Pasadena, where it was hit hardest the other day with flooding. In his area, resucuers were sending people out by boat, but had to stop. My cousin left her house in another part of town, built on 8 foot beams, as the water rose too high. She is across the street with her father watching her home being destroyed. My high school that I went to is flooded completely. My niece is at home in Port Arthur. Flooding in her area and a tornado hit and went through their backyard. Her husband can't get home and has to work as he works for the city's water plant. My other niece has little ones and lives in another area nearby there. They did not evacuate (it wasn't mandatory then, they didn't leave the day before for fear of tornadoes) and now they are stuck. My sister in law in Winnie (my brother's previous wife, we are all still close) has had her home flooded before . I have friends all over the state. It is mind boggling. There is no where for anyone to go, or to come in at this point. It is devastation like no one has ever seen here. I am so worried. Please keep my family and all the others in Texas in your prayers, which I know so many are doing.

Just to give you an idea, this was something I borrowed from a child hood friend's FB page:

This really puts things into perspective.

"Both Houston airports have been under two separate tornado warnings and are closed. Every major road in Houston shut down. Ben Taub hospital being evacuated. Only one way out of Brazoria county because every other way is under water.

20,000 cruise passengers stranded in the gulf. Every waterway from Houston to the coast predicted to reach major flood stage within the next two days.

Most schools postponed until September 5 or 6. Bastrop bayou still rising, Austin bayou still rising, tornado warning for many areas, and it's still raining.

Everyone south of Hwy 6 and west of 288 are under water.

For my non-Houston friends- to help you understand the devastation:
Houston is huge. The greater metropolitan area is circled by the Grand Parkway - which is 170 miles long. That makes the area of the circle inside the Grand Parkway over 2200 sq. miles.

2200 square miles of densely habited, urban and suburban, areas is flooded.

Imagine if the entire state of Delaware, with twice the population of Manhattan, was under water.

That's Houston.

It's still raining."

I've talked to everyone, several times. All are okay, but the situation can change as the storm and flooding are still occurring. If y'all know me at all, you know I am usually positive in attitude. I am trying to stay that way, but gosh, it is hard with this and all the unknowns.

One thing I know about Texans, they are tough to beat down and will help each other when needed! They just need this rain to STOP! How are all the other farmgirls down in Texas? Y'all okay?

My family is doing okay considering. Water on my dad's street has started to recede. My sister in law tried to go to work Thursday, but couldn't make it. The water was gone enough for her to get there Friday. Glad they have some normalcy. Not the case for so many more. There is going to be so much work for everyone to do, it will take Texas years to rebuild. My heart and prayers are with all those families. Breaks my heart. My mom lost one of her best child hood friends. She just sat down and died. My mom thinks it is from the stress of the flooding and worrying about her daughter. My uncle also went to the hospital with chest pain this week.

Just so much destruction, but when you see the amount of people the death toll could have been so, so much worse.

Getting chills hearing about the devastation in Houston. At least here, when it floods, we don't have cottonmouths and alligators to worry about. Floods change your life forever.

Sending you prayers, Nicole for your family. My older sister and niece live in Houston as well and so far they have done OK and no water got inside their homes. It has been such a scary week of devastation for everyone in coastal Texas.

Kelly hope your family is safe. Today my dad is at home and so far okay, but the neighborhood is still floating. My brother and his wife are safe but their neighbors all had water in the house of evacuated. Unfortunately the police officer who drowned on his way to work was a friend of my brother's. Three relatives have left their homes due to water, one had a water snake on her porch. But my family are all alive and so far okay. So sad all of it. Praying for everyone down there.

Karin, you are so right about Texans!

Keep praying farmgirls!

Prayers for all your family and everyone else affected by this storm. I lived in Texas for many years and it hurts my heart to see this devastation. I also know my beloved Texans will not stay down, they will get through this.

Nicole--I understand how you feel overwhelmed. Floods can be devastating. I live in a town along the Mississippi and went through the Flood of '93. It forever changes the way you view the forces of nature. I am praying for all those affected by the flooding, and i hope there are no more deaths. it is going to go on for a long time, both the flooding and long term economic and ecological damage. It will take years for some people to recover so i want to warn you. The good news is, people usually learn something from these horrible floods, and when they rebuild, they don't make the same mistakes. The bad news is, it is going to last a long time. Our flood lasted for months, and that was why it was so destructive. I feel especially bad for the many people who don't have insurance. I hope all your family members stay safe. Most people make it safely through floods, but the losses are hard to deal with. Our town's waterworks was flooded, so I will never take water for granted again. I work at a hospital and we had tanker trucks with water for vital services such as flushing toilets, etc. In the kitchen, where i worked at the time, all the water we used was bottled. it was unbelievable how much bottled water we used. We used it for cooking, washing pots, everything. All the employees had to use port-a-potties. We had about twenty Johnny-on-the-spots lined up outside. Many were re-named "Joanie on the spot" to designate they were for women only. At least we kept our sense of humor. We had to bring in generators to keep everything running but we made it through. Travel was difficult because many highways were flooded. At least the levees around here held, as there are three refineries just south of where I live. So I pray the levees hold in Houston, because if a refinery were to be flooded, that would be a disaster that I can't imagine. We also received lots of help from foreign countries. People came here from far away to help clean up. It was great the way people pulled together.
