Nini,

Well, first of all a comment about Ms. Ball ~ she was absolutely gorgeous! The early films and glamour shots of her just take your breath away. I too think I have seen ALL of her episodes. Turner Classic Movies is a great channel and I catch a lot of old favorites on there a lot. I like the way it seems that they are up over there with the lights on all night long too. Then I sadly realize that they prerecorded all of those snipettes and have long since been tucked in with shades down and I really AM the only one up all night!

But on to your question, I have battled insomnia all my life I think. I used to lie awake and play games with objects in the room, something like counting the number of slats on a shutter or how many books were on a shelf. Quietly singing songs about everything. My aunt, who is very ill at the moment and like a big sister to me (three yrs my senior) used to actually hit me and pinch me. . .things a big sister would do to a small child when I refused to stop singing and humming. She said the songs would be nonsensical and about nothing. She says now that she wished she'd have just grinned and bared it because she thinks she stumped a fabulous career. LOL! Anyway, I tend to believe that it is just marching to the beat of a different drummer. I get some weird second wind if I'm not asleep by 10. It's rare that I go to sleep before 3am most of the time. I'm just lucky at the moment that I am not having to "go to work" at the office at present. It was a huge problem when I was actively part of the rat race. But here I am, taking care of an ailing parent and I don't punch a clock but the down side is that I am never "off" anymore.

One thing that I have found to help when it is a nervous energy is to write it down. There is an old trick that you can do. Write out everything that you are thinking about, even trivial. And be thorough when you can. The last step is the most important. You promise yourself that you will read it tomorrow and that you will take it up right where you left off. Believe it or not, this does work with an unsettled brain. It might not help if you are just having an interrupted circadian cycle though....where your body clock has been altered. Of course there are a million things that can affect your sleep hygiene. Eating too late, too much caffeine or sugar. Too much noise, or not enough. Use white noise and keep your bedroom cooler than the rest of your house. Taking a very warm shower just be going to bed can help. Also, there are theories that you must use your bedroom for nothing except sleeping. If you have electronics in the room, it can elicit stress from you as well as some emit blue light. I think it is not a conscious thing about the light but I've had sleep studies and read a lot of info over the years and they all pretty much say the same about the sleep hygiene. Also, if you are not getting enough exercise and getting the toxins out of your body, you can be susceptible to sleep disturbance. There are some grass roots folk who tell you to even be aware of your flooring and that you do have to make a certain amount of contact with the earth. Meaning barefeet touching the earth. I'm sure there's a term for it. . . maybe "grounding"?? And finally, the big one, HORMONES! Could we even pretend that we females are not cursed to have such a wondrous thing as hormones. Think about it, we are biologically wired to "know" when the children are in distress even when they are staying the night at grandma's??!?!

Well, I think I will close for now. This is quite a long post, and there are still clothes to fold and books to read before I sleep . . . H~U~G~S

It's a hard life but someone has to hold all these cushions down! Can't have them floating up into outer space, now can we? LOL!

LOL! Weeeelllll... Yes, I'm still up. And YES! I really do miss being able to watch the old movies. I loved watching Lucille Ball, especially. My goodness, she was a grand lady, so elegant, in those early films! Now I think I've watched every episode of Frazier 50 times over... They make me laugh every time.

I am having SUCH a horrible time trying to sleep. Warm milk isn't even working for me. I've been up til 4:00 and 5:00 AM for the past few nights, and right up and at 'em again by 6:30. This is insane. I started working on a Pinterest page one night and then I just kept going. I really should start back up working on my sister-in-law's vacation mini-scrapbook, but I'm afraid I'll make mistakes for lack of sleep; I really don't want to ruin it. I've tried exercising on a cloud walker (remember that blast from the past?), I've tried muscle relaxation techniques, I've baked, I've done chores, I've watched how-to programs, I've tried knitting, I've tried long baths and showers, I've tried essential oils, I've tried deep breathing, I've tried reading boring old books... Nothing. I've even spent a lot of time praying and talking to the Lord, which usually brings me great peace, but still... wide awake!!! And I'm such a lightweight that two Tylenol usually knock me out, but not any more. Oy yoy yoy. I pray I'm not destined to this crazy insomnia forever!!! I honestly think that what this is is that my days are so hectic and so not my own that once the world calms down I come alive to my own world... Only nobody else is up to share and enjoy it!!! Ugh! But I do love the peace, the tranquility... AND having control of the remote!!! LOL!!!

What do you do to pass the time??? Why do you think you can't sleep when the rest of the world is catching zzzz's???

Hugs -

Any night owls still out there? Would love to chit chat with others who do their best work @ nite! Don't you miss the old days where you got to catch really old movies late late at night? Now it's crock pots and hair products. . . (not sayin' I haven't tried all those great products ~LOL!!)

i am always up till 2-4 am. even if I sleep in and take no naps I still can not get to sleep till then. Might be that I worked a weird schedule when I was working. I worked till 1:30- 3:30 am so I feel stuck with it..

Wait till you get older. I wake up about four times every night to ... When I get up I am awake. But it!s hard to soar with eagles if you hang out with owls at night. Maybe we should form a club lol.

These "days" I am working night shift which has completely messed with my time. I worked nights several years ago for several years and it was a breeze but now, hmmm...not so much! I am missing when I had a day job and went to be around 11!! At least then I could keep up with what day of the week it is!

I feel like Taco Bell, I am usually up 2am (EST..heehee) or later. Since my husband doesnt get home until 12:30 it takes me a couple of hours to wind down and of course, he falls asleep before I do, so I have a couple of hours to myself. Just me, the hot flashes, and yarn.
Merry Days!

LOL! My husband could sleep through a tornado. I'm a super light sleeper and wake up in a snap and then I'm AWAKE!

I'm a night time tinkerer too Nicole =)

No, it is not crazy Nini! I'm slow simmering chicken stock all night. Canning is good for the soul =) I dunno, I find cooking very centering and balancing. Go for it!

Ninibini Posted - Nov 04 2015 : 8:12:20 PM
LOL! That's so funny, Nicole! But yeah, a bit scary! Be GLAD you don't have that gene - someone has to wake up if there's ever an emergency!!!

It's funny because my hubby just turned in for the night and I'm thinking about starting my canning - is that crazy or what? My days are just so, so busy lately... Would that be crazy? I mean, who starts canning at 11:00 PM?

I'm with you, Nini! But I also find many times I do my best "piddling" (as in "piddle" around the house) at night. I also find that if I wake up, I'm up. My husband could sleep standing up and I can (and have) vacuumed my daughter's room while she is sleeping in it. They both sleep so soundly it's scary!

I do not have that gene. :/

I am most certainly a night owl. However, I have this pesky thing called a job, where they make me get up at 4:30 am, throw my hair into a pony tail, drive up a mountain and sit there for 8 hours. On the weekends, I sleep until 10 am (drives rancher Hunky Hubby crazy)

I confess - I'm both a night and day owl! LOL! It seems, though, that night time is the only time of "day" that I have to myself. Once the guys are nestled all snug in their beds, suddenly I can breathe and unwind - and just be me. I can't promise I'll still be up at 2:00 your time, but it's highly likely I'll still be up at 2:00 mine... I'd sure like to have someone to chat with during the wee hours, so definitely please do start a late night chat thread! Let's give it a whirl, girl! Hugs - Nini
