I just finished this book by British author John Seymour. It was really interesting, with very many illustrations and some photos of all kinds of traditional implements for housekeeping, sewing, knitting, cooking, household appliances, you name it, and how they were used. If you haven't read anything by him, he also wrote some books on self-sufficiency which was a big concept in the UK back in the 70's-80's (he lived in Ireland). So he writes about traditional skills with a lot of experience and respect. It's definitely written from a Eurocentric perspective so it's missing some our our pioneer ingenuity, but it was great fun to read and I learned lot! It's probably no longer in print, I found it at the library. If you can find a copy, its a great book!

This book sounds so interesting! (As do the others mentioned) I’ll have to see if I can find it.

He really was a pioneer, wasn't he? Another author who seems way ahead of his time that I recently discovered is R.D. Symons. I'm just finishing up a book of his called "Stilton Seasons." It's an amazing memoir of a year of his life spent in rural Canada. He writes about the destructive nature of some types of "progress" with unapologetic passion. My mom gave me the book, and it's riveting. Anyone else everve read anything by him?

I read quite of bit of John Seymour in the 70's and 80's when we were a young family gardening and living simply. Now I am retired and am re-reading and practicing some of those principals. Thanks for reading him.

I think I had that book from my local library awhile ago. Very interesting book. Loved all the information it had on just about anything and everything. I love to learn about life from days gone by and how everyday things were done.

Our library has Seymour's Self-Sufficient Gardener. I put a hold on it and will pick it up tomorrow. I'm sure it will be very interesting. Thanks for the alert, Amy!
