Hey y'all,
My grandmother gave me a number of pyrex bowls that I would love to use, but she wrote her name across the side in black permanent marker. She really wanted those bowls back! But now I'm torn - do I try to remove the marker, if I can only figure out how, or do I cherish my grandmother's signature on the sides of all her bowls? She's still alive - she's in a nursing home in lower Alabama. What do you think?

LOL...
I would leave it.
I have had good luck getting everything off of Pyrex (I do a lot of estate saling) with baking soda. If rubbing alcohol does not work :).

Rubbing alcohol removes permanent marker. If it were my bowls, I would remove the marker. Old bowls are often very pretty and would be much nicer without "graffiti"...but that's me! If you want to leave the name on, by all means, leave it on!!

Marker removes marker. If you use a sharpie right over the other marks and wipe off with a tissue quick before it dries it comes right off. I am pretty sentimental too, tho and would keep her name on them.

Leave it in her memory, but if it does happen again (yard sale finds) use rubbing alcohol.

Love the story, Marilyn.

I belong to a "pyrex" group on Facebook. I will ask the girls there and tell ya what they say. There are serious collectors.

I wonder if a Mr. Clean sponge would work?

Thanks for sharing that story, Marilyn. So funny!

Jennifer - Maybe I'm not the best one to ask on this (very sentimental) but I would love to have something my sweet grandma had written her name on...how special. So, I'd keep it the way it is.

Love that story, Marilyn. Hilarious!

Jennifer I think I might keep them signed, but I'm really not sure. Have you done anything with them yet?

This thread got me chuckling. I got the mental image of your sweet little grandmother writing her name on her dishes before taking them to a potluck at the church -- just making sure the dishes would come home! My mother can be very cranky and get her apron tails in a knot over the silliest things, and one time I thought she was going to burn down the church over some old aluminum pie pans that didn't make their way home quickly enough. She had baked a couple of her really awful sugar-free pumpkin pies for the church Thanksgiving potluck a few years back and nobody liked them, so there was a LOT left in the pans at the end of the dinner. She left the church hall in a snit because nobody liked her pies. So on Wednesday that week, she looked for her pie pans to make pies for actual Thanksgiving -- she could not find them anywhere and assumed that she had left them at the church. Well Sunday came and she went to the church kitchen to pick up her pans and they were nowhere to be found. She was convinced that someone really wanted those nasty old pans so desperately that they would have sneaked into the church kitchen and stolen them under cover of darkness. She voiced her suspicions about who she thought it was (a certain lady piano player who had paid a little too much attention to my handsome 77-year-old Daddy). She vowed that she would never attend another potluck at that church. She bad-mouthed everyone from the preacher to the ushers and every poor soul in between. Well, of course about a week after she had been in her high moral dudgeon, my father went out to get something out of the trunk of the car and found the pans (with the sweaty and crusted remains of the Splenda pies still intact) under a dishtowel in the laundry basket she had used to cart everything to and from the church hall. He brought the basket into the kitchen, set it on the table and called my mother to come look. Her response? "Now I wonder how that woman got into the trunk to put those back?" My Daddy just shook his head and went back to playing solitaire on the computer.

I've had great luck with nail polish remover. I bought some plastic bins at the thrift store and it gets the writing off every time

Monogrammed pyrex--that's pretty cool! I don't know about Pyrex in particular, but I have used alcohol (rubbing and drinking) to remove permanent marker from glass, Goo Gone also works well.

I'd keep the personalization - how many people have "monogrammed" Pyrex?

But in case you don't want to, I wonder if that glassware polishing powder "Bartnders Friend" would work?
