Anyone care to share how much you pay a babysitter by the hour (teenager, not "daycare" situation)? I have to admit that we have never left our kiddos (8, 6, and 4) with a teenaged babysitter before, and I have no idea how much they are paid. I have a very responsible girl coming Sat night to babysit, but she's only babysat her siblings, and not been paid for it, so she has no idea what the going rate is either. My sister who lives in the DC area pays $10 - $12 an hour for babysitting, my response to that is, call me up and I'll drive the 8 hours to babysit for that rate ! just kidding of course, but that is exorbitant, in my opinion. So--I know it's up from what I got paid as a teenager, but what do you pay? Thanks for the opinions!

Julie, you were raking in the money back then!!

14 years ago I babysat a little boy (started at 3 months old) for 3 days a week in the summer, plus did a little housework for the mom, and I got $25 a day. I was 14 and thought I was rich! But I was the only one of my friends that worked, so it really seemed like a big deal!

I think $8 sounds reasonable.

Back when I was a teenager I would get anywhere from $10.00 - $20.00 for an evening... like from 7:30 to midnight or so. It all depended on who I babysat for, and that was a few years ago . I've heard that now people around here get $8.00 or more per hour.

Goodness gracious. I remember when I used to babysit and it was $0.35 per hour and if you got over four hours in, you made over $1. Boy oh boy, those were the days. I'm glad my kiddos are all grown. Now what my oldest son has to look forward to with his new little one.

My daughter is 12 and she has been babysitting for about 3 months by herself-before we would go together and sit so that she could gain some confidence and I was there if she needed help with anything. She babysits mostly for a 6yr girl and 1yr old boy and sometimes the friends dog. She gets between $8 and $10 for the children and about $10 per night for the dog. Natalie- my daughter always makes sure she takes her REd Cross babysitting bag with her, a few crafts to do with the kids and treats and drinks.
I hope this helps.
