And so it begins – my reign as Ms. November Farmgirl of the Month. What an honor, and I am so looking forward to getting better acquainted with many more of you. In that spirit, I have decided to create A Day in the Life of Farmgirl of November. As y’all know by now I am somewhat of a newbie to the Connection. You’ll get to know me better and I hope you will respond and I’ll get to know you better too. So here goes:

Sunday, November 1, 2020
Mary Jane’s wonderful calendar tells us this is American Indian Heritage Month, National Novel Writing Month and I’m So Thankful Month. Daylight Savings Time ended and today is All Saints’ Day as well as my Dad’s birthday – He would be 124 today. And that brings to mind my grandmother's
cast iron skillets that I inherited from him and Mary Jane’s marvelous Cast Iron Kitchen book that inspired me to restore them all. Yes, cast iron is bulky but nothing cooks better. Doing a Rigatoni dish in my Dutch oven tonight. DH is Italian and so I cook his favorite pastas most Sundays this time of the year. He is glued to football on TV September to February, so it’s always a full studio day for me. Today I have been working on beaded Christmas Spiders. My fingers and eyeballs are tired.
I received so many heartwarming greetings today from many of you . . . so you know what I am so thankful for, don’t you? YOU!

This month has flown by and now as Andrea Bocelli sings, “Time to Say Goodbye”. Well, as far as Farmgirl for the month of November is concerned. You’ll not be getting rid of me that easily though, as I’ll be lurking around all over this wonderful chatroom. And, like many of you, participating in endless fun swaps in 2021.
As we begin the last month of 2020, I am reminded of how different my perspective is from just a year ago. This year has taught me many things about resilience and patience. I haven’t had a haircut or been to a restaurant since February And, you know what? That’s OK. Coronamadness has resulted in a very different holiday season – less elaborate decorations, and more handmade gifts. That’s OK too. But I haven’t seen my son or grandson this year either. And, that’s not OK. Which makes me contemplate that I am not alone in that. There are many of you dear Farmgirls out there who will be alone for Christmas and it may actually just be another day on an empty calendar for you. Has the Farmgirl Connection been a lifeline for you as it has been for me? See y’all around the chatroom . . . .
Big farmgirl hugs,
jean

Jean -- Great idea -- I didn't know there was an actual program to de-commercialize Christmas. I unplugged Christmas about 25 years ago. I just got tired of three months of fuss for one holiday. You never used to see Christmas items in stores before Thanksgiving now they are there before Halloween. We are bombarded with the spend spend spend mentality. Too many people go in debt for it, forgetting the real meanings. We should remember that it is the spiritual meanings, and not only for Christians, of that time of year that is important. I no longer drive myself crazy shopping and now just enjoy getting together with my kids and grandkids. No more stress--it's wonderful. This year we have all decided to stay home and stay safe.

And so my “reign” as Farmgirl of the Month for November is half over. I have received so many blessings in getting to know many of you better. And, as we approach Thanksgiving, I am reminded that Christmas is but a few weeks away. Yesterday I saw a post from Nini in Pennsylvania that made me reflect on the stress we "Christmas Magicians" feel every year. It is starting to set in, isn’t it? This will be a very different Christmas for most of us this year. Covid19 has changed our world in ways we would never have imagined just a year ago. Trying to find the bright side in the darkness, perhaps it’s just the kick in the patootie that we need to think about turning off the Christmas Machine. Prior to the beginning of the 20th Century we were not bombarded with all the commercial hype and the holiday had a more spiritual and family-oriented focus that did not revolve around extravagant gift giving, extensive entertaining and over-indulging as we know it today. Was that a bad thing? I don’t think so.
When I first retired, I began putting on quilt retreats a few times a year. At the October retreats, I would feature a workshop called Unplug the Christmas Machine based on the book by that name written by Jo Robinson and Jean Coppock Staeheli. I still have all the training materials and have been thinking about starting a page on the Connection chatroom with the exercises. It would take a week to go through them. Let me know if there is any interest. There are seven exercises and, just so you know, there has never been any charge for them and these materials are freely available. If you think you’d be interested, let me know and advise me where you think I should post it. I promise you will come away feeling far less stress and more in control if you historically find this a stressful time with too much to do and not enough time to do it in.

Hi Debbie, I chuckle to myself every time I see a message from you, aka Blessed in Colorado aka Blessed in Oregon. I can relate -- after I registered for the Connection chatroom I thought of a different user name that I would much rather have used. But, alas, once you are registered, you can't change your user name. Boo Hoo. Just don't move out of state again . . . . we'd never find you. LOL.

Been rainy, windy and chilly but just fine. Actually was able to go to the beach, it was wonderful. I will never get tired of the beach.

My friend, Barbie, in South Carolina, does an envelope swap twice a year. I have been participating for about 10 years now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The deal is – I make 10 hand-decorated and/or made envies. They can be all the same or all different. I send them to her before the deadline date with a return postage fee. In return I receive 10 all different ones. Great fun and folks are sooooo creative. Some excel at stamping, others at embossing or collage. Personally, I am kind of hooked on construction and dimensional projects. I have a large shoebox full of them and have been using them for some of my Farmgirl swap notes. I’m not in competition with any of the other swappers. I just always try to do my very best work and ask myself “Would I be happy to receive this?” These are the ones I received this week for the Fall swap. jean

November 13
A snowy, blowy day here in Northern Idaho. Toasty fire going and staying busy in my mini-Santa’s workshop studio. Frustrating day working on a machine embroidery project – some projects just go easier than others. Thinking a lot about the upcoming holidays – no friends or family with us this year and that brings to mind traveling. I got my monthly report from Google GPS today. It showed that I traveled all of 22 miles last month. Oh yes, we went to the Troy clinic to get our flu shots. Woo Hoo . . . what exciting trip should I plan for this weekend I wonder . . . . jean

I remember that Sassoon cut too!

OMG Judith! That's the trouble with some of those high-end salons. They do what they think you might want - they don't ask first. That was funny, but so sorry you had to go through it.

I definitely have Coronavirushair - I need it trimmed. It is too long and stringy. LOL! Scared to go into a salon - wish I could find a hairdresser who does house calls.

Oh my -- Sassoon brings back some memories. Mostly bad.... 1970s. San Francisco. Mom and I were shopping and decided I needed a haircut for an upcoming whoop-de-do event for county officials (Ex was on the school board). I sat watching my hair get shorter; I wanted a short layered cut. It was looking pretty good. The gal whirled the chair around so I couldn't see the mirror and did some more snipping. She them turned me back to the mirror to see the finished product. I was totally speechless -- I looked like I had enlisted in the Marines or my wagon train had been attacked by Indians. My hair was perfectly layered -- each hair was 1/2 long. My husband wouldn't speak to me. The next day I drove to K-mart and bought a wig to wear to the whoop-de-do event. I had a job interview the next week. The wig stayed on for three months until my hair grew out somewhat.

LOL. Sara aka YellowRose commented yesterday on Sassoon haircuts . . . ah, I remember them well which brings to mind I've been having bad hair days lately . . . . Hmmmmmm, who am I kidding, I don't know about you, but it's been a bad hair year for me. Thinking back I went from Sassoon as a professional woman, to a Judy Dench style when I retired and now living through Coronamadness and not having had a haircut since January, I have progressed (or digressed) into a Doc Brown style . . . . Remember him from "Back to the Future"?On that note I think I'll have a little pre-dinner "leg lifter" dedicated to KatMom and enjoy an after dinner movie tonight . . . A Dan Brown thriller, "Inferno". Night Night . . . jean

Veterans Day today. How many vets in your family? I can list
1. Uncle, US Army, killed in action in WWII
2. Brother, US Air Corps, WWII
3. Ex-husband, US Marine Corps, Korean War
4. Husband, US Navy, Viet Nam
5. Brother in law, US Navy, Viet Nam
6. Brother, US Marine Corps – between conflicts
7. Son, US Navy – between conflicts
8. Nephew, US Marine Corps and US Army, Gulf War
I’m very thankful for these veterans and for those brave men and women who have served or are currently serving to protect our freedom and precious way of life that we are privileged to enjoy. Aren’t you? I received the following from a friend. I wish I knew the man’s name so I could give him credit. But it is definitely good food for thought.
Jean

A man went to the Great Lakes Military Cemetery. He took some pictures while reflecting on what's going on in our country today.
Then he wrote this simple poem:
I don't see any color here,
The headstones look the same,
No black no brown no white skin tone,
There's no one here to blame.
These soldier's fought and died for you,
Their color you can't see,
Your rights are still protected,
Here's the place to take a knee.

Good morning Jean, so sorry for the lost of your daughter Maggie. I know that empty pain that never goes away. I lost my only child, Dustin, in 2017 when he was 43.

Now to Sassoon hair cuts. That was my style for years. I cut my own hair now so gone are the days of a precise cut.

Love the view from your studio window. My way of thinking all windows should have a view even if it's just one potted plant or a windsock blowing in the wind.

I love your farm photos and what an awesome craft studio! Enjoy every minute of your time in that happy place!
