DOG DAYS JUNK JOURNAL
There seems to be some interest in Junk Journals AND I have become quite manic lately about the latest little book I learned to make. So here’s the deal . . . on or before the swap closing date, I will send each person who signs up one of my handmade books which are basically 5’1/2” x 4-1/2 “ along with a bag of ephemera also known as junk to get you started. Fill the book anyway you want. You can even leave some blank pages for your partner to play with or comment on. No backing out once you get the book. You will have a month to create your masterpiece before mailing to your partner. What is a junk journal you ask? Well according to Google --A Junk Journal is a handmade book of recycled and found materials and ephemera. The pages can be used to write, draw, paint or record memories, thoughts, ideas, and inspiration. The finished junk journal can become anything you want. -- Here is a great link for “How to Make a Junk Journal”.

Sheila,
There are actually all types of junk journals. I have done 3 different kinds. One I just decorate the pages of a blank journal any way I want. Here is an example of a page I did.

Another is to use pages you can print off and make a themed junk journal. I did one of wolves and the moon for my oldest granddaughter and did one with dragons for my next oldest granddaughter.
Lots of digital kits for those on Etsy.

You can do what I think is a real junk journal using junk mail, papers you can dye with coffee or tea. YouTube has tons of tutorials or you can look on Pinterest for ideas and examples. You can leave empty pages to write in and decorate some pages what you like because you create it.

Hi There Junk Journalists -- I was just taking another finger stroll through the delightful Junk Journals that Marilyn sent me for this swap. The smaller one was quite Valentine related so very timely right now. The larger one was truly a work of art. Marilyn you are sooooooo creative and really have a flare for junk journals. I hope you are still making them -- such talent and wonderfully creative ideas. Thanks all over again.
hugs,
jean

Just a wee note to thank y'all for playing in the Dog Days Junk Journal swap. It was great fun. Maybe ?? we'll do another one in the winter when we all have cabin fever.
A big shout out and apology to my partner, Marilyn, as I am currently unable to photograph. Her journals (yes, that's an extra "s" as there were two) are most delightful to behold. Marilyn clearly LOVES lace. And I bid you adieu with a marvelous tip she sent -- Always include a 'hard piece' with each journal you make. That is a thick, flat piece of book board or cardboard that can be decorated or not. Why, you ask? Well, think about it -- when the JJ's get full of stuff and you want to write on or decorate one of the pages in it, it can be really a challenge to work on lumpy pages. Just slip your 'hard piece' under the page and voila you have a hard flat surface to work on -- Genius Marilyn. Thank you.
hugs,
jean

Aawesome, awesome, awesome !! Thanks for sharing Wanda Sue. And, you know that makes me think if any of you just can't hardly wait to do another junk journal. Why don't you mosey on over to the new Fall Feedsack Swap and sign up for it. Just think how adorable a junk journal would be covered in feedsack material and with pages throughout related to feedsacks. Oh my, that would be just too too . . . . .
hugs,
jean

Oh my goodness, I received a package today from Marilyn with not one but two amazing junk journals. I must figure out what's amiss with my camera phone and try to get some photos posted. The larger of the two is loaded with laces of all kinds and lots of hand dyed papers -- just beautiful. The smaller one is made with the little book I sent out and I swear she must have used every piece of ephemeral that I sent. Such talent to be able to make it all work together so seamlessly. Thank you so much Marilyn for the Beautiful journals and all the delightful extra goodies. You really spoiled me.
hugs,
jean

Heather,
You're very welcome...thank you for your kindness while being the first journal I ever attempted! I totally had NO IDEA what I was doing but it inspired me! So I did what I could here and then I got on Etsy and started to dig....dig...dig and then over to YouTube to dig some more! I found some great resources...papers, digital art, video tutorials and I got INSPIRED! So inspired that I decided to create this photo journal for one of my very special brides. You see I'm a professional portrait and wedding photographer and this young woman I've been photographing since she was 17 years old. I photographed her senior portraits from high school, her senior portraits from college, her Mom's wedding in 2020! *yes I said WEDDING in 202!* ;) lol
They are a very special family to me and we've experienced a lot of adventures together. Now she's getting married and they wanted their engagement photos done in San Francisco. This bride also LOVES roses and all things romantic! So I took the elements of her bridal shower invitation and the elements (and by that I mean I tore apart her invites and the envelopes they came in!) to use in the journal. I found art work on Etsy to download and print. I added lace, bird charms and other little bits that fit! I left 3/4 of the journal empty for her to fill it with wedding pages, honeymoon memories and whatever her heart desires.
It was certainly a labor of love project as it took me DAYS to complete it! I had a hard time figuring out how to make the book / journal itself and I didn't want it to fall apart so I did purchase a blank, ready to decorate journal on Etsy. My plan is to learn how to create these on my own. But now I'd totally ADDICTED to this craft! There are so many fun themes and papers out there! Here where I live we only have a small Joann's which doesn't have much in the dept but as soon as I can get down the hill to a larger town I plan to go visit a Hobby Lobby and Michael's to see what I can find there. Anyway, wanted to share my journey, the completed journal and the creative path this has begun for me.

I work in a bookstore which takes donations and buys used books. I have 10 paperbacks which are too damaged to sell. I can post them later and I will send them out for trade or postage. First, I have to get this junk journal finished.
