Mardi Gras Swap or Let the Good Times Roll
When someone shouts "Laissez les bon temps rouler" you should respond with "Oui, cher." In English, this means "Yeah, you right."
DH and I had an office in Gulfport, Mississippi in the 90’s and used to fly in and out of New Orleans where we spent a lot of fun recreational time. No place quite like “Nawlins” in the US for a playground. I’ll be sharing some fun Cajun background, stories and recipes with you in the next few weeks here as well as some conversational Cajun speak.
Mardi Gras is February 16 this year. So, let’s have some Cajun fun and Let the Good Times Roll. Here’s how it’s going to work:
Sign up until January 30 and send me your mailing address by private email.
I will send you a Mardi Gras swap care package to get you in the party mood.
Make whatever you like using the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold. Tucks are strictly optional and not required.

QUIZ ANSWERS
1. Fat Tuesday. Mardi is the French word for Tuesday and Gras means fat. In France the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras when merrymakers would binge on all the rich, fatty foods that remained in their homes prior to the beginning of Lent, which kicked off six weeks of eating a mostly fish-based diet.
2. Russia. To honor the visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, local businessmen introduced his family colors of purple, gold and green as the official colors of Mardi Gras.
3. Purple stands for justice. Gold stands for power. Green stands for faith.
4. Alabama. French-Canadian explorer Pierre Le Monye d'Iberville arrived in what is now modern day Mobile, Alabama on Fat Tuesday in 1699. He dubbed the location Point du Mardi Gras.
5. A tiny baby figurine. Tradition holds that whoever finds the baby must host the next Mardi Gras party.

Darlene - yes, I love the rock! I was lost without my computer, I could do some things but no posting of pics and the graphics was messed up. My cousin diagnosed and took my computer away overnight to replace something, we become so attached to our things.

 Thank you so much Darlene for all the goodies! I finally got my computer back in working order and am able to post pictures.  I especially love the fleur de Lis painted on the rock, very special, my granddaughter will try and talk me out of the beanie bear, LOL. In late January I traveled from my home in Minnesota to Florida to help my Mom, she had been sheltering in place since March and was very lonely. We spent most of February getting her back on track with doctor appointments and getting her diabetes under control. To add to the issues my computer was misbehaving, fortunately a cousin that lives near my Mom is a techy geek and came over Wednesday night, diagnosed the problem, got a part and installed this morning. I am catching up! Darlene my apologies for the delay, I will have your "Let the Good Times Roll" package in the mail on Monday.

So glad y'all liked this swap. It was sew much fun to do. Sorry Linda about not doing an Etoufee reciipe. I am allergic to crab and crawfish so haven't made it. I have several recipes for it in my Cajun cookbooks but didn't want to post anything I hadn't actually made myself.
I'm working on new Scrap Happy and Feed Sack swap ideas . . . watch for them . . . . coming soon.

We enjoyed Mardi Gras with a big pot of gumbo that will probably last us several days. I didn't make crepes suzettes this year as twirling the cast iron fry pan has gotten impossible with my arthritic hand. I will have to train DH next year.

Julie - I did Thank you!!! I guess you can't see it in the picture but I am wearing the earrings! My Granddaughter Bella- Bird confiscated the pom pom boa from me as soon as she got here! She is 7 months and was in awe of it all night. I have a feeling it will be a fav. dress up item of her's for years to come!!! Her big Brother Aiden who is almost three and then Cousin Lorenzo who is 6 each had to have a turn wearing it and leading the parade around the Living room! My Husband Found the Ring in The King Cake so He Crowned me Queen of Mardi Gras So I finally got is back as part of my Queen Costume! Lorenzo Decided This was so and as the oldest Grandchild his word is final in these things.
I am so glad you enjoyed your VooDoo Dolls. I so enjoyed making them. I filled them with wishes of Good Luck and Wishes of Heath and Prosperity.

My daughters made us a Mardi Gras dinner tonight. My Youngest Lizi is the Blonde in front of me and my oldest Morgan is behind me.
We had Jambalaya, Dirty Rice, Beignets, King Cake and Swamp Punch. (They made me a Vegan Rice with Veggies and a Mini-Vegan King Cake) The Grand Kids all had Fun we listened to Cajun Music and the kids watched the Princes and the Frog. It was our Last time getting together for a while because my oldest daughter will have to quarantine from me for the next 10 weeks because of my Son in law's new EMT/Firefighter Rotation in the City. They won't guarantee his Covid Testing and he may be exposed because he may have to go on Calls that involve Covid cases this rotation. We want Her and our Grandkids to come stay with us - at least let us keep the grandkids during this time but they are going to have him quarantine in part of their house and think that will be safe enough but don't want to risk it with being around me... The whole thing makes me crazy but at least we were able to be all together tonight and had a good time!!!

Jean - I sent something to you as well and the Post office said you were both supposed to receive it by this past Saturday?
I had my daughter be sure to have them shipped out last week and check with the post office so they would make it to you both before Mardi Gras.

Yes Judith. I saw that too. Resourceful folks down there in Nawlins. I have been trying to take some overdue photos to post on this and other swap sites. However, between my ancient ailing cell phone and my ancient ailing body, I am not having much success. Will keep trying. I read that instead of decorating floats for parades the people are decorating their houses. I did a google search for Mardi Gras 2021 and sure enough there are pictures of houses and yards decorated.

Jill -- I thought you might like to know that the coins on the mini quilt are from Mardi Gras in 1981 when Mom and Dad visited New Orleans. Mom was in a wheelchair and they threw a lot of coins and beads her way.
