Yesterday morning I found a wee lizard, at my front door, stiff as a board. He - she - it - looked frozen so I scooped it up on a paper plate and took him to my laundry room. I placed him gently under my little bay tree. It never twitched or showed any sign of life. Didn't know what would happen. What happened was in under 30 minutes he was loose somewhere in my laundry room. I guess since he - it was so tiny -it didn't take him long to thaw. I keep an eye out for him but haven't seen head or tail of him since he was under my bay tree.

Sara, I think that is why I never saw a horned toad! It also why the quail in Texas are few...they lay their eggs on the ground and the fire ants were killing them. I am highly allergic to fire ants. SO glad they are not here in CT (yet)!

I love them in my greenhouses. Yes my grandmother when I was little, had horned toads every where. She also had those huge red army ants. I sure hope they are not extinct. I would love to see them again one day.

Kelly, lizards in your green house is good thing and I didn't know they would come when they heard a familiar voice. As I understand it when the fireants moved into Texas they ate the big red ants that was the only food for the horned toad. I heard several years back they were on the endangered list or a group was trying to get them put on the list.

I love your story. I find lizards in my house occasionally, but never mind at all. I love them. Have several resident ones in my greenhouses. I talk to them and they come out and look for me. So darn cute to me. I have not seen a horned toad in so many years. Loved them when I was little.

Sara, I remember my mom talking about them, and my brother, but I don’t think I ever did. Played with bugs, toads, crawfish, lizards, painted box turtles, and even used to catch, study, and release tarantulas in the hill country. But I don’t think I ever saw a horned toad.

Sara, Oh my goodness,, I enjoyed this post immensely. You are such a cutie pie! I fondly remember those lizards from growing up in Texas. They were all over the place when I was a kid. I would find them inside once in awhile too. I remember when I was very small, I was riding my Big Wheel. and there was one sitting above me on the drainpipe. I stopped and was looking up at it, talking to it. The thing leapt off of the drain, and onto me - latching itself on my collar bone! Oh My Goodness! It hurt. I never forgot that pinch!
When my daughter was little, she lost a frog in the house. We found it, finally, in the upstairs bathroom. I guess it liked the humidity in there.
A friend of mine once had a chipmunk in her bathroom heater!

Michelle I didn't name it because to name is to get attached so it remained "It". It was fun for the couple of days it was in the house but glad to have it outside so I don't worry about stepping on him or it jumping on me. lol

The loose lizard is now loose outside in the little garden shed that has a dirt floor. Found the wee one this morning by my vanity bench in my walk-in closet. He was just laying there and I thought he was dead but when I returned with a paper cup & towel he was over by a basket. Took a few tries before I got him in the cup. He had to travel out of the laundry room through my bathroom into my bedroom to get to the closet. It's best he is outside and not in my knickers' bin.

I don't mind lizards as much as spiders, snakes, mice/rats, and other bugs.

Well Sara I hope you enjoy your little lizard fellow. Will Annie leave him be if she happens to spot him?
I am not a fan of anything that creeps or crawls or scurries. That includes lizards, snakes (which I loathe) and mice. I can't stand any of them. I can tolerate spiders and bugs which according to my aunt I could not as a child.

Sara, my kitty Bump would bring in those little lizards all the time and drop them. Of course they took off and Bump was on the chase again. Whenever I finally found them, I always tried to capture them in a plastic cup and release outside. They love roaches to eat and goodness knows Florida has an abundance of those!!!LOL!!

As long as there are bugs the little guy will find food. When my son was small he was always catching lizards. Sometimes they got loose in unexpected places. One time while driving on the freeway one ran up my stockinged leg. I pride myself on keeping control of the car. Another time there was one inside my nightgown when I put it on. Raising boys can be an adventure.

I guess I could sprinkle water on the bay leaves. Years ago a friend caught a Texas horned toad and gave it to me. I put him in the front flower bed and each morning before I went to work I looked for spiders to give him. He stayed around for a couple of weeks than he was gone.
I played with Texas horned toads when I was a kid so I have fond memories of them. In my opinion they are a Texas treasure. But I have no such memories of lizards so my wee houseguest will just have to do his own hunting.

Barbara there's no danger of me befriending a snake - be it good - bad or ugly. Did a load of towels today and while in laundry room I looked for him but still no sign of it.

Sara---that was very kind of you to help a lowly lizard. I would have done the same thing. Just be glad you didn't feel sorry for a snake and bring it in. Once we went up to visit our neighbor who was quite the heavy drinker and he had a huge black snake laying in the middle of the living room---said he wanted it to catch mice. That gave me the creeps for sure. Will you put your lizard out treats and a small bowl of water?
