The weather has turned a bit warmer today. I got out and looked about my yard and herb gardens. My Saffron Crocus is green after all this hard cold weather. My friend gave me some bulbs a few years ago. I put them in a paper bag and away in the cupboard. I forgot about them. Two seasons ago I found them and planted. They survived! I am amazed! They have multiplied also. They will produce a flower in the fall that I can take the 3 small red styles off each flower. Yeah I am so excited. Has anyone else grown this crocus? How did it go for you?

Ashley I live in Paris, northeast Texas, and I grow bulbs in containers with good results. In the fall I hope to plant a container of saffron crocus for the spring. It's on my wish list.

I've so wanted to grow saffron crocus! It's beautiful! I live in south Texas though, and the soil is so heavy! A lot of bulb plants rot here, but it might grow in a container? I haven't gotten the nerve to start one yet! Let us know how they turn out!

This Crocus is so pretty!! I wish they would grow here in Florida. Bulb flowers are not indigenous here and just don't do well at all. I grew up in Virginia and my Mom had purple, yellow and white crocus all over our yard in early Spring. They were such a joy to see and enjoy before the daffodils and tulips arrived.

Thanks Dawn, I have printed them out. I use all of the ingredients except for angelica and dried Persian limes.

I found angelica plant on-line from Mountain Valley Growers so I will order it. It will make a great addition to my herb gardens. I will google the dried Persian limes and see what I can find.

Edited to say I found dried ground Persian limes on Amazon. Will order next month have maxed out my "mad" money for Jan.

If you use basmati rice:

Persian Spice Mix for Rice
2 tablespoons dried rose petals (make sure they are truly organic)
2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons ground cardamon
1 tablespoon ground cumin

Mix all the ground spices together in a bowl. Store in an airtight container to preserve freshness. Two teaspoons of the rice advieh for 3 cups of dried rice. Najmieh Batmanglij cookbook, "New Food of Life" has excellent recipes for Persian foods. I've tried other recipes but think hers is the best.

Sara, here is the Advieh Persian spice mixes. If you have a middle eastern store by you, you should be able to find the angelica and the dried Persian limes. The Persian limes are much less bitter than other varieties:

Persian Spice Mix for Khoresh (meat stews but good for roasts too)
2 tablespoons ground dried rose petals (be sure they are truly organic)
2 tablespoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cardamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon ground angelica
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander seeds
1 teaspoon dried Persian lime powder

Grind all the spices and mix. Store in an airtight container to preserve freshness. Add for the final 30-35 minutes of cooking to stews, poultry or beef roasts. Najmieh Batmanglij cookbook, "New Food of Life" has excellent recipes for Persian foods. I've tried other recipes but think hers is the best.

Dawn I would love to receive your recipes. I have several heirloom roses that I grow organically so I can dry my own rose petals. When they bloom I will try to remember to send you some dried petals. If I forget you are welcomed to remind me.

Sara, if you like I can email you two recipes for advieh recipes. One is for meats, the other for rice. They both require organic dried rose petals, something that isn't easy to find. Let me know if you would like these recipes.

Dawn I have all to partial shade in backyard and partial in front yard so I hope to plant saffron crocus in pots next fall along front sidewalk to porch which is sunny.

Dawn I'm interested in any favorite Iranian spice mixes you may be willing to share.

Unfortunately I live in a partial to full shade area. Crocus needs full sun, something I don't have. Crocus does thrive in IL, but full sun is necessary for them to do so.

Dawn thank you for the thoughts. I hope so too. So..can you grow it where you live? Is that a possibility?

Lucky you to grow your own saffron! My husband is originally from Iran and saffron is the #one spice used in practically every single dish. Unfortunately it is the world's most expensive spice. My mother-in-law has given us saffron every year as a gift so I am able to keep up with my Persian cooking. The flowers are beautiful and I hope you have a delicious crop!

Kelly, they really are beautiful right now with the long slim white green leaves. We will have to keep each other posted on if they bloom or not.

Hi Tiana
I planted out my bulbs early last summer. They are just green and beautiful right now. I too hope they bloom this year.

Sara and Grace, that is where Saffron comes from. It is a purple flower and as soon as it flowers (same day) you have to pick the little red styles are what they are called and dry it. There are 3 on each flower, and it goes a long way. I am so excited for mine to flower. I'll take pictures. My friend that lives not too far from me that gave them to me has had great luck in growing hers.
