What a long time it has been since I have been here. I have been not living the farmgirl lifestyle I wanted and I have taken several giant leaps closer to it. After some major upheavals, I am living where I want to be, looking for the perfect chunk of dirt and getting closer. so I am BACK!!

You are not alone Janice, I live in an apartment in Southern California and over the years I have taken over the yard in front. I have slowly created a garden oasis of rose bushes, butterfly flowering bushes, vegetables and herbs. Basically a little of everything. The tenants and neighbors all love the little bit of nature that I have created in the middle of an apartment/condo area of town. I also feed the birds (finches, blue jays, and doves) and yes the squirrels are grateful for what falls to the ground (with the exception of one squirrel who maneuvers himself onto one of the feeders). I can fruits, pickles and jams, dehydrate fruits, veggies and turkey jerky and this year am learning and experimenting with fermenting. I too am so ready for a little piece of paradise (2-5 acres) of land that my husband and I can develop after retirement (hopefully in three years). Hang in there and remember all good things come to those who wait (and work hard to achieve)!

Hi Aimee,

I live on a small chunck of dirt called the city and working outside the home, at a job which do not always give me lots of time for canning, sewing etc. I did manage to plant a small garden in our back yard with the help of my husband. Well as Mary Jane has said a time or two in her magazine and book ... Farmgirl is a state of mind. I just wish I had more time to do all of the farmgirl homekeeping. Some day in our retirement.
