Tuesday the hubby and I are headed to the lake for a little early morning kayaking... only this time we will be taking our pup, Ginger...
We bought her a life vest and today I made her a little sun hat to keep the sun off her nose and eyes,,,

I don't have her totally strapped in,,, just testing to see how she reacts to the vest in a couple of inches of water....

I didn't have a pattern so I had to wing it for the design... I made giant 'button holes' for her ears to go through and I also added a strap that goes under her chin and snaps to the other side..in case the wind blows or she tries to shake it off....
I'll try to remember to take and post pics after our outing...

Jana... The learning curve is about two minutes then it is great fun. I would exclude river kayaking though from that statement. I haven't done that. We have only done ocean and lakes. When we retire we plan to get a couple kayaks. We are still planning to settle in Texas. Per the map there are a lot of lakes.

Great advice Grace. I am with you on the vests. Never can be too safe.

Still to this day remembering flying through the air makes me giggle.

Nancy.... not laughing at you.... laughing with you!! Lol!
I hear ya...
it is good to attend a class on kayaking or go with an experience kayaker for ones first outting... check with your local sporting goods store or wear you rent your kayak... some times they give group lessons.
(The senior center back in Spokane actually does senior kayak outings)

Little 'tips ' make all the difference for fun kayaking.

For us on Bass Lake it's being mindful of the boaters and jet skiers....and the 'wakes' that they create.... turning ones kayak perpendicular to the wake as opposed to being parallel helps to keep one from being fliped over.
I dont trust my average swimming skills so I always wear a life vest... hey my pup wears one, so should I.. lol!

Also... although my kayak has a compartment to stow stuff in... I keep my phone, waller, etc stuff in a zip lock baggie in the compartment in case I get flipped..so my phone and wallet stay dry.

Gracious Grace If that isn't the sweetest lil pup and outfit.

April... Find a kayaking tour in your area. You will have trained leaders and others of all levels with you. I live about an hour from La Jolla Shores, .ca. They have guided tours around the bay all the time. My hubby and I toodle alone mostly.

Funny story. We had been out in the bay for about a hour or so in sea kayaks. I had never kayaked at La Jolla Shores before that. I usually go to Oceanside. When you are ready to come in you ride the surf in. BUT.... and this is a very important technique. You need to lean back as the kayak catches the surf. Hubby told me this as we left Into the surf on the way out but an hour or so later after having a wonderful time I forgot to lean back. I felt the surf catch my kayak then I felt myself become airborn as I catapolted up on over the kayak. I landed in waist deep water so I wasn't hurt accept my pride. My boat tapped into my hubby's boat. He was a little scared until I was able to catch my footing in the surf and stand up soaking wet. I wanted to get mad at him for laughing but couldn't. It really was pretty funny. Closest thing to flying as I will ever know. The leaning back counteruweights the inertia of the surf and keeps you dry and in the kayak as you come in.

How fun. Looks like you and Ginger had a blast. Sorry your hubby isn't a fan, but that just means more kayaking for you and your friends!

Ok,, as for the hat,,, she shook it off right away,, wasn't gonna have any part of it,,, as for the vest,,, be were hardly in the water 5min when Ginger decided to test out the bouancy of her new vest,, and yes it works great! lol!

turns out hubby is not a big fan of kayaking,, at least not in a 2-seater... lol!

after we beached, we let Ginger play in the water,,, she Loved it! and would jump in and start paddling... who knew we had a 'water dog' ? lol!

Have fun on your kayaking trip. Ginger seems like such a calm dog. My dogs would hate having a hat on. The hat is adorable. Way to go! She is one spoiled little pup!

Grace - yes, on a pontoon boat and they (2 dogs) loves to swim with a life vest. My husband and I have always wanted to go out kayaking but were afraid to try. Yes I understand there will be a learning curve to this but one we are willing to take.

Jana... my friend Sherry has a 'sit on top ' kayak and she brings her dog...who weighs about 40lbs.. sherry's kayak is longer than mine and mine is 10ft long... and yes her dog wears a life vest...

So I would assume that if your dog is a good swimmer he/she should be ok... has your dog ever been in a boat?
