EDIT_ I think one is sick! Praying it isn't pneumonia. I am too new to this. The breeder thinks she is fine...

Day 1- brought home, a few sneezes, Breeder says, oh normal, they do that when excited. Probably fine.
Day 2- Notice a cough after bottle, typically. Breeder, she's probably fine.
Day 3- Notice cough more often, Breeder, "
All goats will occasionally get a cold. Just like humans. Keep an eye on her
and make sure it doesn't turn into pneumonia. No reason to think it will. That
is just the potential bad outcome.

She wasn't coughing at all here - so the other possibility is that it might be something she is breathing in.
Any dusty hay? Mold? Anything like that which could cause irritation? You can
also take both of their temperatures to make sure they're both in the same range.

They will also cough/sneeze occasionally just like humans and it means nothing at
all other than she got something in her throat.

If she is still eating, I just watch them. Do you have a vet to call if she worsens? Do
you have any antibiotics just in case she runs a fever?

I really don't expect it to be anything problematic. And if she is drinking too fast, then
she sounds pretty healthy to me. We keep Pen G (penicillin) on hand just
in case. Having a vet you can call that has
some understanding of goats is also a plus.
We usually do phone consultations with different
vets if we have a problem we're not sure how to
handle.

Remember - antibiotics help if they need them and hurt
their rumens and immune systems if they don't. So don't
give them "just in case".

It's a possibility she is sick, but I'd be very, very surprised.
My guess is you are being overly cautious. But better
that than ignoring her."

Good tips. Still can't find a ruminant vey near.

Today- Seems worse tonight. Drank 2/3- 3/4 of normal bottle. Standing around humped over, won't play. Lightly bleating. They are actually very quiet.

Matt ran for som Penicillan, but I hope it isn't too late and that I can figure out HOW to administer it.

We just spent and exhausting and cold, but wonderful, weekend in VA. We traveled 8 hrs each way to attend Joel Salatin's Lunatic Tour. While there, we met and dined with Justin Rhodes and dozens of other like-minded families during Justin's Great American Farm Tour (search on Youtube! Lots of fun!). Then after getting home at noon yesterday, I drive to my mom's to get my dogs and my handsome boys (another 3 hrs). This morning we left at 7:30 to pick up our new French Alpine doelings! Yet, another 4 hr trip. I AM SO TIRED!!!!!! lol! But they were worth it. Meet Teacup and Zabrina.

I still have to find my thumb drive to upload and edit our Polyface video, and now our Goat video. Hopefully I will find it today! Subscribe to our youtube channel to be notified when they post. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6rAaWB8U8t13yBZCd-nwLA

MStart with healthy stock- it is the only way, My friend gave me dozens of goats and none of them were healthy. I bred from them and it was a disaster. Goats that are sick pass their sickness to their offspring, I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to get them well.

How are your babies doing Alicia?

Yes, she and Teacup are both being treated for Cocci and getting Thiamin. The vet did blood work, everything looked good. He thinks the original infection did become full-blown pneumonia and that it seated in her lungs. He put her on a stronger more specialized antibiotic for that. We shall see.

Have you done a fecal on them? It's fairly cheap for your vet to do (<$15) and it could be a good idea since one got sick out the gate. If your little Zabrina is still off, definitely get her in for an exam :( Is she doing any better?

She is on another round of Ampicillan. Tomorrow is last dose. Thinking we need some blood work. She acts ok. She is never as energetic as Teacup, but she seems happy. I wish I could put some weight on her. Any ideas?

Glad you got her some antibiotics and that she is pulling out of it! Goats are a bit more delicate than more people think! They are adorable!

How is the goat Alicia? Been thinking and sending prayers for your baby. I am getting 2 new does in June (they will be about 8-10 wks old). I know there is such an adjustment. In spite of that, I CAN'T WAIT!!!! Such beautiful babies! (Nubians)
Anyway, just hoping the antibiotics are doing their job.

Shannon- I'm not sure they do. I think they just give meds. It is contagious, so we are watching Teacup. Zabrina had a sneeze Monday that grew into a cough, that grew into labored breathing. They say moving goats is very stressful. The stress may have sent her on the spiral. It's damp and cool, so I am trying to keep them in. Zabrina is sleeping in a dog kennel, Teacup is bouncing off the furniture. lol!

Thanks Krista. I just wish I'd listened sooner.

How sad. Good thing you trusted your instinct instead of listening to the breeder. Hopefully she gets well soon. Poor thing.

Poor baby! What is the likelihood of your other goat getting it? How do they test if it is bacterial or viral? Or do they treat goats with antibiotics regardless? Any ideas on what causes it? Hoping things get better!

As suspected, she is borderline pneumonia. Got her on ampecillan. Switched to milk replacer. Our vet said if she wasn't improved by the morning, to call for a stronger antibiotic.

Have they been given a shipping fever shot? This is fairly common. I know that the breeder I get my goats from always makes sure to give me a shot for shipping fever.
