Ten years ago a mule showed up at my sister's farm. It was during a severe drought and no one claimed her so Judy stayed. The other day in broad daylight my sister saw three coyotes running as fast as they could out of the pasture with Judy in hot pursuit. I knew burros and donkeys would challenge coyotes but didn't know until now mules would too.

I have written the story and my oldest sister, a artist, is working on the artwork for it. As I see her work it may spark changes in my story.

Sara, I feel there's a story that should be written about that mule!

I too know that farmers will use mule to pasture with their sheep and goats to protect them from predators. I love that your sister too in the homeless mule and gave him a place to live and have a job too earn his keep. Thanks for sharing.

I read (somewhere) that owning just 1 mule or llama makes for great 'alarm' system... In that article it said that having just one mule or llama for a flock of sheep is a good idea but not two,, as the mule or llama will team up with it's own kind and not have the 'guarding' instinct... I am sure you could research my info on this on the internet...
I luv that Judy went 'street rod crazy' on those coyotes. lol!

Judith, thanks for sharing with us your story which is both a little sad and funny too.

Deb so glad our little stories helped you to have a better morning. I know when Betty told me I broke out laughing and so did she at the thought of Judy getting after those coyotes.

Well, cute story, Sara! I've been called "Stubborn as a mule". My real name is Judy. I changed it to Judith when I started working. My adoptive mother said it sounded more "adult". Anyway, I was named after the birth family's dog. True. My sister Sam was named after the cat. Go figure.

You had a cute story and I digress. LOL.

Nancy and Lenora I wish I could have seen it too. Molly, a cattle dog, plays with Judy. They take turns chasing each other. On the other hand Bit a rat terrier dislikes Judy and the feeling is mutual. Judy kicks at her every chance she gets.

When we were kids growing up on a watermelon farm in Dallas County my father had a mule named Judy. So it seems like all the mules I have ever known are named Judy.

That's a cute event Sara. Wish I could have seen it. Judy sounds like a good security system.
