Diana, I am a believer in Vaccines and have had the MMR series twice because I did not have any titers that showed immunity. Getting these diseases as an adult can be serious and I never had any problems with the MMR vaccine or any other vaccine for that matter. My children were also vaccinated with all the recommended series and never had any problems except maybe a sore area for 24 hours. While there are documented issues with children and vaccines, they are in the minority and most kids do fine. Most adults have few if any problems. When I worked as the Employee Health Nurse for 6 years, I gave MMR, Hepatitis B and Flu vaccines all the time and never had an issue with any adult employees or volunteers.

I've had mumps, but never had Measles of any kind, even though exposed. Yes!! Couldn't wait to get the shot! As an adult, Dr did not want to give me the shot until,I was in my 40's and had a tubal.

TRUST ME!
You Do NOT want to get the Mumps when you are older. I got them as a young adult and was swollen from behind my ears to my breast bone. Ate ginger ale and mashed potatoes for over a week.

We have a mumps scare in Waco, TX and 2 schools are disinfecting this week.

Denise - doesn't sound like they have changed that much... my daughter got the vaccine only eight years ago :( She still has issues!!! I do find it interesting that your second child also had issues!!! Our doctor also recommended against any more vaccines. I was a pediatric RN before having my children... it was a hard adjustment to go from vaccinating to not at all... but the more research I do, the more scary I find them! If you do great with them that is one thing... but if you are the one that doesn't (or it is your child!) it changes everything!

I don't k ow much about the vaccines now. My second born had a horrible reaction to the MMR and our doctor advised against any more vaccines. I would recommend doing research on it.

My recommendation is to talk with your doctor... as they would know you best, health wise, after yourself :) Generally vaccines are thought to be safe. HOWEVER one of my children reacted very poorly to the vaccination and went hypotonic. Issues to vaccinations is common enough that the government has a special fund to "pay off" those with issues... So basically, I say find out if the doctor thinks it would be best for you to have one, read up on it and make an educated decision <3

I had my booster for MMR last year when my youngest had his 18 month vaccinations. I was also born in 1972 so well after people began being vaccinated for these illnesses. For example we recently had a measles outbreak in our area and our public health advised that anybody born after a certain date should have boosters (I think it was 1970) but before that measles was common and people born pre that date were considered having probably been exposed.

Check with your local public health clinic and see if it's necessary. You may be exempt because when you were young mumps and measles were very common.

The MMR vaccine is very safe and I had one as a booster when I was employed as a nurse since the guidelines call for two and I had only had one as a youth. I never had any symptoms from it either. It is a very safe vaccine and it is a good idea to prevent any potential Mumps disease as it would be much more serious as an older person.

My opinion is trust your body, Diana.

Ultimately, you have to decide. Good luck sweetie!

Here are a couple of articles.

PS- If you decide, maybe only get the MUMPS?
