I am about to have the first meeting with other Featherweight owners. Some want to learn how to oil and take care of them. We'll do that. Does anyone want to do a virtual FW group?

Greetings! Have not been on-line in a while. Elder care is keeping me busy! I have submitted a post to the stitching and quilters page. Debbie, Farmgirl Of The Year, and myself are preparing for snow sew days and are looking for a few Kim Diehl patterns. Any Featherweight fans Kim Diehl fans? We are looking for Geese In The Meadow, Journeys End BOM, Handful of Stars, Big & Chunky Woven Stars. Also by Henry Glass, but not Kim, Cotton Pottery. I have most of Kim's books and would be happy to share as well. Thanks!

I have several now in my VSM collection. The last one is mint condition, found at a tag sale! Was very cheap, and my go-to machine. The white one is still tempermental to thread the bobbin, but the others in my collection are quite easy.

Of all my machines, the Featherweight is my GO TO. Love love love them. My other favorite model is the Singer Budget 185J. So sweet and a workhorse.

Nicole

I also leave little sachets of lavender in my cases(with and with out a sewing machine in it)... it really does help keep odors from knocking you over when you open a case...
and don't laugh I keep small lavender sachets in my sewing baskets as well.. one can never have enough sachets....

Thanks for the suggestion Grace! I have one case that doesn't have an odor, and another case that lives in the garage and the machine lives in the sewing room! I have allergies!

Gae,, luv how you decoupage'd your FW case.

I had to use clay kitty litter in my case to absorbe the musty odor...

Decoupage! Happy to share the case for my green custom painted featherweight! I am hoping that the case may not smell any longer so I can travel with my machine to a class or sewing time with friends! I used gift wrap designs by Jennifer Chiaverini....Elm Creek Quilts, Loyal Union Sampler. I enjoyed reading the book series as well.

Thank you for the welcome Sylvia! I have tried to photograph my green featherweight and it always turns out looking like a glossy black one! The latest project I've used it for is my official unofficial business card! I don't have a business, but with a tricky e-mail address, I find that I land up writing my e-mail when folks ask for it. So I decided to make unofficial business cards. I use card stock, sew a stitch around all edges, sew a scrap rectangle in the center and then use a vintage typewriter and type my e-mail address under the fabric! A good way to use up scraps too!

Greetings! Count this new Farmgirl in! I have two black and one custom painted, dark green, my favorite color! The two black machines were private sales at a very good price, the custom painted machine was almost a give-away at a local antique shop so investing in a custom paint job was affordable. The new FeatherweightC240 model is on my dream list. I also have the Singer 160 Anniversary Limited Edition machine and I'm not sure if that is a spin-off of a Featherweight. Happy collecting and sewing!

I did actually quilt with mine. Used metallic thread. Did some placemats, SID. I don't recommend it because of the minute space you have between needle and body, nothing to do with its motor. They are no longer made, but can be repaired. I love these little machines.

Nicole.... as much as I luv my F.W., ... When I haven't used it lately... I always forget to thread it from the right to left... which is a bit snug getting ones hand in there. I am use to the front to back threading of modern machines... lol... that and the fact that I am blind as a bat!!!

Hi Linda,

I only meant it has taken some practice to get it right, they are very exact with bobbin threading. Compared to my drop-in on another vintage machine, I had a harder time getting used to it is all. I just love her otherwise! So much fun to sew on!

LOVE the Lucy box! Fun!

Nicole

I luv mine! I was lucky and bought mine for $100 a great deal!
I have used it for quilting...
The case was in poor looking shape so I decopauged it with "Lucy & Ethyl" fabric...

and I even found a cute Lucy (trying) to sew image to put on the inside lid...

gotta love these lil work horses of the sewing world...

The Featherweight is great for piecing quilt tops. But for doing the quilting when all three layers are together may be a bit hard on the machine.

I don't understand what you mean about the bobbin threading being hard to wind? I think they are very easy.

Oh my goodness!

I just got my first Featherweight a month ago. She is the white model 221 from the late sixties. She is so quiet, but the bobbin threading makes me nuts! My other vintage Singer is easier to thread the bobbin, though it is not portable. I do think they are addicting, though.

I read somewhere that it is not good to use them for quilting as it can burn out the motor???

I have one, that my sister gifted to me. She has several. I have not had time to use it yet but it does run. I do like to admire it. Pretty machines.

I have two orphans that were thrown away--cosmetic damage on one. Both run beautifully after being cleaned up and greased.

I have 2 Featherweight 221s - still looking for a 222 at an affordable price, which is not an easy task. I also have quite a few extra attachments for the 221-222.

I also have 2 Singer 301s - another collectible Singer machine and I believe it is the first slant needle with feed-dogs that can be lowered.
