For several years I've tried to grow pumpkins and been unsuccessful. Had nothing to do with weather or whether I'm a rotten gardener, it's because of my oldest doxie. He raids the garden beds and has eaten green tomatoes, jalapenos, tons of those, peppers, and always little green pumpkins. One day I see them, the next, they are gone. Aren't they like green rocks when they are wee little? Never find traces of any vegetable, he consumes them whole. We had to raise our beds higher and higher. That solved most of the thievery. But, because pumpkins sprawl and go where ever they want, he had great access to the vines. Now, I invested into a metal pyramid to grow them up. I'm excited--maybe, just maybe, we'll have some pumpkins I can harvest for pie. It has to be for pie! Putting up scarecrows doesn't work, so don't go there. He's now 16 years old, deaf and blind, but his nose works just fine. I will definitely document my success with photos. Can hardly wait to share.

Hi Sylvia,
We got much needed rain here the couple of days and now the sun is bright and shiny. So far so good this year with my pumpkins. Looks like a bumper crop! Woo Hoo!
I hear ya on having to be inside on a pretty day!

Nicole..those are hungry little devils! I was out today admiring my little crop and watering them. We'll have 70º weather coming. It'll slow down the garden but it will be sunny. Marine air today....cools down the house. I have canning to do and lots of computer work. New computer won't allow me to use old files. Everything needs to be transferred. It's for our quilt guild and time is of the essence. Darn.....Enjoy your weekend.

This reminded me of a story from my brother. He had a friend in Texas who was a farmer. He grew pumpkins in a big field, but all of sudden, each year, something would come through the field and tear through the fruit. Something was eating them! They suspected wild hogs, but was not sure as they weren't seen in that area typically. Each year after, the pumpkins would just about be ready to harvest for fall selling when they would be devoured! He was going to go broke with this scenario. One year, my brother's friend put up a camera. Lo and behold it was....
wait for it...not a skunk....
Not wild hogs....
Not raccoons...
Not possums...
Can you guess?
COYOTES!! A pack of coyotes would come in, feast on the pumpkins, then leave the carnage. I would've never guessed!

We're having a strange garden this year. Lots of marine air coming in mornings, then warm afternoons. It's slowed down the tomatoes and cucumbers, which isn't good. But.....earlier this week I decided to count how many wee pumpkins were on my vines. We were due to have a very warm week, not so much marine air. I gleefully danced when I counted 8 pumpkins. Those of you who have followed my pumpkin adventure will totally understand the glee and dancing. This morning when I was out watering said garden, one of those wee pumpkins I swear quadrupled in size! Must go out with camera and document this. I can taste those pies right now!

Unfortunately, I don't have to worry about my fur-baby and his stealing garden vegetables. He lived to a ripe old age of 16 and crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. He developed a spinal problem which affects older doxies. He had a stroke so he couldn't walk, drink water or eat. Lost control of peeing, etc. He was suffering at this point so over the Bridge he did go. I know he's with my son who will take real good care of him and load him with love. We have shed many a tear the last 24 hours. As with all our loved ones, you're happy they are no longer in pain, but you will always miss them. My other 4 legged tribe members are just being very quiet.

Sylvia...that is soooooooooooooooooooo funny/as well as frustrating I am sure. Hopefully your new
pyramid trellis will do the trick. I have a Scottish Terrier and he wouldn't eat a vegetable if the
vine grew right into his mouth. LOL So, I found your little doxie story so humorous.

Sylvia, I sure hope your new strategy will work this year for your pumpkins! There is nothing sweeter than homegrown pie pumpkins cooked up into pumpkin meat for pies and pumpkin bread. My mouth is watering just thinking about it all! Fall is my favorite season and I look forward to pumpkin anything. Let us know how this year's crop fares and Good Luck!
