Hello from Saanichton, just outside Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. I have had a subscription to the magazine for a year and have just checked out the website. I have 5 children, 3 teenagers still at home and 2 who have moved out. We live on a hobby farm raising sheep, rabbits and am planning to get back into chickens in the spring. I also grow a large vegetable garden, and enjoy preserving food for the winter. I have been a 4-H leader for the past 16 years. I enjoy reading, cooking, baking (especially bread), knitting, spinning, sewing, and assorted other crafts. I am really looking forward to participating, learning more about so many topics and earning my first badges. Can’t wait to get to know so many farmgirls with similar interests.

What 4-H project does your daughter do, Nicole? 4-H is such a great organization, I'm really happy to be part of it.

Jill :)

Four ewes. The kids had 4-h market lambs but these are mine. Our neighbors from NYC are originally from Montenegro and wanted us to raise them lamb since we already supply them with chicken. They had a flock of over a hundred in the old country, where they still have shepherds. They share with us how things are done back there. Please tell more about your sheep.

Andrea how many ewes do you have? One of our new 4-H members this year raises Clun Forest. I hadn't met any before and really liked their looks. There are a number of Black Welsh Mountain on the Island.

Thanks Catherine, we also homeschooled and 4-H was a great add-on to what they were learning. We have some clubs that are called Community Clubs with a number of projects. Our club currently has Sheep, Woolcraft and Photography, so I guess we are heading in that direction. Nice to hear from other 4-H folks.

Welcome, Jill! Whew, you are a busy farmgirl. I look forward to hearing more.

I was in 4H as a kid and loved it. We homeschooled our children and also had them in a local 4H group throughout their schooling life. For me, 4H was like an extension of our homeschooling. The experiences and knowledge they gained was vast. Our group wasn't just a one type project group. It encompassed students that were involved in everything from food, textiles, robotics, and livestock. I was a project leader for various projects.

Hats off to you for being committed to such a great activity for 16 years. Impressive!

Thanks everyone. I've been a 4-H Leader with the local sheep club, I was "A" leader (overall organizer) for 12 of those years, lately I've taken a step back and mostly focus on the paperwork and the woolcraft project. We raised sheep (Dorsets and Jacobs) for a number of years, but as our kids grew older and became less interested in showing sheep, we decided to no longer keep them over the winter and just buy a few lambs in the spring for our freezer. My husband is a sheep shearer and one of our dreams is a larger property where we would be able to get back into sheep farming in a more serious way. I'm lucky because he occasionally brings me home beautiful fleeces to work with. Bonnie what type of 4-H club were you involved with? Do you raise sheep Andrea?
